[00:00:54.000]But the devastating effects are the same...
[00:01:01.000]...and unfortunately you need to be prepared for the worst.
[00:01:22.000]If you were ever to find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event,
[00:01:26.000]your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan.
[00:01:30.000]The plan doesn't have to be complicated.
[00:01:35.000]There are three things you could do that make a difference: Run. Hide. Fight.
[00:01:44.000]First and foremost,
[00:01:46.000]if you can get out, do.
[00:01:49.000]Always try and escape or evacuate
[00:01:52.000]even if others insist on staying.
[00:01:55.000]Encourage others to leave with you,
[00:01:57.000]but don't let them slow you down with indecision.
[00:02:04.000]Remember what's important: you,
[00:02:06.000]not your stuff.
[00:02:08.000]Leave your belongings behind
[00:02:10.000]and try to find a way to get out safely.
[00:02:14.000]Trying to get yourself out of harm's way needs to be your number one priority.
[00:02:23.000]Once you are out of the line of fire,
[00:02:25.000]try to prevent others from walking into the danger zone
[00:02:28.000]and call 911.
[00:02:50.000]If you can't get out safely,
[00:02:52.000]you need to find a place to hide.
[00:03:06.000]Act quickly and quietly.
[00:03:08.000]Try to secure your hiding place the best you can.
[00:03:13.000]Turn out lights,
[00:03:14.000]and if possible
[00:03:16.000]remember to lock doors.
[00:03:18.000]Silence your ringer and vibration mode on your cell phone.
[00:03:24.000]And if you can't find a safe room or closet,
[00:03:27.000]try to conceal yourself behind large objects that may protect you.
[00:03:32.000]Do your best to remain quiet and calm.
[00:03:50.000]As a last resort,
[00:03:52.000]if your life is at risk,
[00:03:54.000]whether you're alone
[00:03:56.000]or working together as a group: Fight. Act with aggression.
[00:04:01.000]Improvise weapons, disarm him.
[00:04:06.000]And commit to taking the shooter down,
[00:04:08.000]no matter what.
[00:04:23.000]Try to be aware of your environment.
[00:04:27.000]Always have an exit plan.
[00:04:29.000]Know that in an incident like this, victims are generally chosen randomly.
[00:04:34.000]The event is unpredictable and may evolve quickly.
[00:04:41.000]The first responders on the scene are not there to evacuate or tend to the injured.
[00:04:46.000]They are well trained and are there to stop the shooter.
[00:05:06.000]Your actions can make a difference
[00:05:08.000]for your safety and survival. Be aware,
[00:05:12.000]and be prepared.
[00:05:14.000]And if you find yourself facing an active shooter,
