- [00:00:06.360]Hi, and welcome to "Tech Edge".
- [00:00:07.950]We're in a third episode talking about
- [00:00:10.860]the integration of technology and the arts.
- [00:00:13.560]I'm Guy Trainin, Professor of Education
- [00:00:15.690]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:18.000]And I'm Cody Talarico.
- [00:00:19.110]I'm the Fine Arts Education Specialist
- [00:00:20.730]at the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:22.530]And today we're going to talk about Lighting Lab.
- [00:00:25.140]I know nothing about lighting
- [00:00:26.670]except that I love the theater, so that's something.
- [00:00:29.340]Yes, well, and I will put the caveat out there too.
- [00:00:31.710]I may not have all the lighting terminology
- [00:00:34.860]with the theater as well.
- [00:00:36.690]So this is a "Scenic & Lighting Design" lab
- [00:00:39.420]and it allows you to go through
- [00:00:41.730]and work with lighting design
- [00:00:43.230]and kind of how do lights interplay, how do the colors,
- [00:00:46.380]how do the shadows work, and things like that.
- [00:00:48.720]So it has both a interface for iPads
- [00:00:52.140]as well as on the computer.
- [00:00:55.560]And it is a creative license that we can use here.
- [00:01:00.630]So I'll make it a little bigger so you can see it.
- [00:01:02.400]And, so right now everything's red.
- [00:01:05.490]So if we wanted to change some of the colors,
- [00:01:08.310]what kind of colors would you like to see on that stage?
- [00:01:10.740]And we're looking at a proscenium view, right here.
- [00:01:13.350]So I would like to light it up
- [00:01:16.590]just to have more light.
- [00:01:18.090]So we gotta move away from the reds.
- [00:01:20.310]And I think the top lights,
- [00:01:22.050]I would like to go more in the direction of,
- [00:01:24.240]let's say even just straight light,
- [00:01:26.460]because I want to see the actors.
- [00:01:28.350]Sure, and that top light on the right hand side,
- [00:01:30.900]if you wanted to brighten that up,
- [00:01:34.050]so you've got your hue there,
- [00:01:35.790]so you could like move that off of the bluish side
- [00:01:39.600]more to the white, this bar here to the left.
- [00:01:42.120]Oh yeah.
- [00:01:43.380]So that just increases the amount of light?
- [00:01:46.920]It increases the hue.
- [00:01:47.970]The hue, okay, all right, yeah I see it.
- [00:01:51.180]So and we've got some sidelights there as well.
- [00:01:54.420]And so you can kind of just adjust things and so,
- [00:01:57.630]and you can see how the shadows are working,
- [00:01:59.490]where the actors are placed on the stage.
- [00:02:04.051]So, and you know, if we wanted to have white
- [00:02:06.960]back on the sec there.
- [00:02:09.180]So I'm just playing around with seeing, you know,
- [00:02:13.110]how it would light up the back of the stage
- [00:02:16.170]and then there are controllers on the bottom there.
- [00:02:18.450]What do those do?
- [00:02:19.530]So the ones down here in the middle,
- [00:02:21.810]so you have upstage right, upstage center, upstage left.
- [00:02:25.350]So if you click on upstage right,
- [00:02:28.350]so, and you're gonna notice that it's on our left
- [00:02:31.920]because the view stage,
- [00:02:34.960]stage right, stage left and orchestra, right.
- [00:02:37.530]And so you also have your footlights,
- [00:02:39.570]so like if you wanted to light up, down right.
- [00:02:42.780]Or something like that.
- [00:02:44.160]And then, so you can put different spots in on the actors
- [00:02:49.170]and see, so like this particular actor
- [00:02:52.350]which is on stage left looks like they're on upstage left.
- [00:02:55.080]So getting that in the right spot.
- [00:02:57.240]And then you also have these controls over here as well,
- [00:03:00.780]which are some sidelights.
- [00:03:02.490]And then you've got footing lights too, which will shine up.
- [00:03:05.880]And you can see the shadows then that it makes,
- [00:03:08.280]so you can start planning out
- [00:03:12.630]what's gonna happen for your lighting crew.
- [00:03:15.330]Yeah, so, and there's all sorts of different
- [00:03:18.750]kind of views and stage scenes within that.
- [00:03:22.380]We were just looking at it and beforehand
- [00:03:25.410]you had seen which another one.
- [00:03:27.720]So which other one did you see?
- [00:03:29.430]I was looking at, so if you go back to the main
- [00:03:34.830]dance lighting lab, I was looking at
- [00:03:42.060]not seeing it right now.
- [00:03:43.291]This one, the color lab allows you to explore much more,
- [00:03:48.630]much closer ads, the color mix that you want to create.
- [00:03:53.070]And one of the things that it made me think about
- [00:03:55.500]is you have to know what equipment you have
- [00:03:57.420]as to how much adjustments.
- [00:03:58.890]Right, exactly.
- [00:03:59.820]You have, because you might not have in the theater
- [00:04:02.910]that kids are working in a high school
- [00:04:04.830]or wherever they're working,
- [00:04:07.110]they might not have the full range.
- [00:04:09.480]So you've gotta know what equipment
- [00:04:10.980]you're working with as well.
- [00:04:12.090]And the nice thing too about that is
- [00:04:14.411]if the theater that's in the school doesn't have lights
- [00:04:20.040]that are updated or industry standard lights right now
- [00:04:23.010]and kids are really interested in lighting design,
- [00:04:26.610]this would allow them to be able to work
- [00:04:28.680]with more than what they have.
- [00:04:31.891]Have, yeah, and I mean, I love the constraints of you work
- [00:04:34.230]with what you have, but on the other hand,
- [00:04:36.030]if you want to expand your capacity
- [00:04:38.220]and be able to start thinking about the opportunities
- [00:04:40.980]when you have a full set of lights,
- [00:04:44.130]then this is a great opportunity to do some exploring
- [00:04:48.360]and some playing
- [00:04:49.380]that allows you to imagine what it might be.
- [00:04:53.910]Yeah, and I so appreciate being able
- [00:04:57.690]to see a couple different actors there
- [00:04:59.520]and then also seeing the shadows.
- [00:05:01.050]And how that interplays.
- [00:05:02.550]And then just kind of the mood, you know,
- [00:05:04.920]if you're in greens or reds, you know,
- [00:05:06.912]what is the emotion that you're trying
- [00:05:08.970]to evoke from the scene as well.
- [00:05:11.880]There are other parts of it
- [00:05:15.480]that have different set pieces that you can bring in.
- [00:05:17.730]So if you go back to this one here and do the light machine,
- [00:05:21.600]and so you've got your two actors in the middle
- [00:05:24.181]on the sides here, you can kind of turn it
- [00:05:26.580]and move the light and adjust the angle.
- [00:05:29.370]You can also adjust the angles up and down.
- [00:05:32.160]And so if it's right above them,
- [00:05:33.600]seeing how it changes the light hitting them.
- [00:05:37.710]But then up here you can also
- [00:05:39.750]bring in different pieces of scenery.
- [00:05:42.360]So like right now you can see
- [00:05:43.560]that those pillars are in the back,
- [00:05:44.820]but we can barely see them.
- [00:05:46.530]And so working with different cues,
- [00:05:50.130]you can then bring in,
- [00:05:52.020]so like we have the light coming from the side on the left
- [00:05:55.770]here, and so we're seeing of the scenery back.
- [00:05:57.780]And I love the map that shows exactly the lights,
- [00:06:01.200]where they're placed
- [00:06:02.490]and what light they're using at that moment.
- [00:06:06.390]What color they or hue they're using at that moment.
- [00:06:09.270]So you can start figuring out what's happening spatially,
- [00:06:13.800]because this gives you the stage on the left,
- [00:06:17.040]gives you what the audience will see,
- [00:06:18.840]but you need to see also where does this all
- [00:06:21.750]of this happen?
- [00:06:22.820]Absolutely.
- [00:06:23.850]So, and then it also even has the different
- [00:06:28.350]textures in it that you can bring in with the lights.
- [00:06:30.600]I always think of Le Mis when I first saw Le Mis
- [00:06:32.820]and he jumps and Jean Valjean jumps off the bridge
- [00:06:35.610]and going down and how it's swirled.
- [00:06:39.000]So to be able to see that too on the floor
- [00:06:41.970]and how all of that interplays for the scene.
- [00:06:46.770]All right.
- [00:06:47.790]So this one is Lighting Lab.
- [00:06:50.730]All of these features that we showed are free features.
- [00:06:53.490]The website does have some paid features with subscription,
- [00:06:57.060]but it looks like you can do tremendous amounts
- [00:06:59.490]just with what's available for free.
- [00:07:02.220]So as somebody who doesn't teach theater,
- [00:07:04.530]I find this fascinating
- [00:07:06.120]and what I love about it is
- [00:07:07.950]that the students who often work about
- [00:07:12.600]and think about lighting don't necessarily have
- [00:07:15.240]as many tools and as many examples out there.
- [00:07:17.640]So this is one of those things
- [00:07:19.230]that really brings in those series of tools
- [00:07:22.890]that they can imagine, practice and not necessarily have
- [00:07:26.070]everything happen in real life
- [00:07:28.320]when everybody's time is really precious during production.
- [00:07:32.160]Yep, and it could even be in like
- [00:07:34.290]I'm thinking literature class, or English language,
- [00:07:37.410]language arts in the high school,
- [00:07:38.460]if they're reading a play.
- [00:07:40.740]You know how many times have we read a play
- [00:07:42.570]but not thought about what it looks like on stage?
- [00:07:44.880]And so this might even bring another element in there for.
- [00:07:47.790]Alright, so today on Tech Edge
- [00:07:51.240]we talked about Lighting Lab
- [00:07:52.680]and we'll see you next time.
