- [00:00:03.219]Hi, I’m Cynthia Cress.
- [00:00:04.371]I'm an associate professor
- [00:00:05.438]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:07.223]and I teach in the
- [00:00:07.874]Department of Communication Disorders,
- [00:00:09.526]specializing in speech-language pathology,
- [00:00:11.845]which I want to tell you
- [00:00:12.612]more about today.
- [00:00:15.131]What I do in our department
- [00:00:16.733]specifically is I teach a lot.
- [00:00:19.069]I used to do a mix of research
- [00:00:21.171]and teaching and service.
- [00:00:22.489]Now I do teaching and service.
- [00:00:24.607]So when you come to Nebraska,
- [00:00:26.926]you're going to see me
- [00:00:27.711]for three undergraduate classes
- [00:00:29.713]starting with early language development.
- [00:00:32.032]I love getting you excited
- [00:00:33.883]about language development,
- [00:00:36.169]whether you're in speech-language pathology
- [00:00:38.138]or special education.
- [00:00:39.773]We're going to help
- [00:00:41.107]you see the connections
- [00:00:42.375]between that language development
- [00:00:44.561]and all the rest of the
- [00:00:45.945]conditions that we serve.
- [00:00:47.113]So three undergraduate classes,
- [00:00:49.099]four graduate classes.
- [00:00:50.834]And some of those are choice
- [00:00:52.302]classes in my area of specialty,
- [00:00:54.621]which would be
- [00:00:55.371]early communication,
- [00:00:56.289]Birth to Three;
- [00:00:56.990]there are very few universities
- [00:00:58.725]that have
- [00:00:59.609]a Birth to Three specialty course,
- [00:01:01.678]autism and
- [00:01:03.563]significant disabilities,
- [00:01:05.048]people with intellectual disabilities,
- [00:01:06.950]people who rely on
- [00:01:07.934]augmentative communication,
- [00:01:09.319]which is using some other strategy
- [00:01:11.721]like a device
- [00:01:12.639]or picture symbols
- [00:01:13.723]or signs
- [00:01:14.707]or natural behaviors
- [00:01:16.159]to convey their messages to people.
- [00:01:18.344]And so I specialize on
- [00:01:19.579]working with those individuals
- [00:01:21.581]from the very,
- [00:01:22.332]very earliest part of communication
- [00:01:24.884]so that they can
- [00:01:26.686]learn that people are important,
- [00:01:28.538]learn that symbols are important.
- [00:01:30.490]And again,
- [00:01:31.608]there are very few people in the country
- [00:01:33.259]who focus on that
- [00:01:35.261]aspect of speech-language pathology.
- [00:01:37.997]So what's unique about our department?
- [00:01:40.100]Well, for one thing,
- [00:01:41.000]we have a cohesive faculty
- [00:01:43.002]that enjoy each other,
- [00:01:44.354]that enjoy teaching,
- [00:01:45.889]that are fun,
- [00:01:46.940]that are engaging,
- [00:01:48.291]and most importantly for you.
- [00:01:50.026]They know how to do what it is
- [00:01:52.428]they're teaching about.
- [00:01:53.663]They all can do clinical service delivery
- [00:01:56.499]in the areas we teach about.
- [00:01:58.251]I teach a lot of practical methods,
- [00:02:00.370]starting with your
- [00:02:01.304]language development core classes,
- [00:02:03.439]about how do you use these skills
- [00:02:06.259]to make a functional difference
- [00:02:07.760]in the lives of the children and adults
- [00:02:09.462]that you serve.
- [00:02:10.630]So you're going to hear from people
- [00:02:12.982]who know how to do
- [00:02:14.984]speech-language pathology,
- [00:02:16.569]starting with your very earliest courses.
- [00:02:19.038]And we've gotten courses
- [00:02:20.473]that, were we got integrated faculty,
- [00:02:22.308]clinic faculty,
- [00:02:23.259]and academic faculty like me
- [00:02:25.311]who teach together,
- [00:02:26.629]who share those resources,
- [00:02:28.331]and work together
- [00:02:29.199]to blend
- [00:02:30.133]in giving you that
- [00:02:32.268]positive energy, that positive feeling.
- [00:02:36.339]In my classes,
- [00:02:37.657]I'm going to know who you are.
- [00:02:39.309]I just finished teaching.
- [00:02:41.227]I'm in the middle
- [00:02:42.162]of teaching a class of 70 students
- [00:02:44.447]that intro language development class,
- [00:02:46.933]and it's got 67 people in there.
- [00:02:49.102]It's the third week of classes,
- [00:02:50.503]and I know every single person's name.
- [00:02:52.455]I know something about them.
- [00:02:53.656]I know where they're from.
- [00:02:54.557]I know interests about them.
- [00:02:56.259]And now I can greet them by name.
- [00:02:58.962]And I'm going to see you
- [00:03:00.079]for the next three classes
- [00:03:01.297]and I'm still going to know your name.
- [00:03:03.499]You're going to be a person here at UNL.
- [00:03:05.902]You're not just going to be a number
- [00:03:07.337]floating around between classes.
- [00:03:09.189]You're going to discover
- [00:03:10.390]us as a department
- [00:03:11.441]and feel like it's home.
- [00:03:13.193]And that's a wonderful feeling.
- [00:03:14.777]You're going to connect
- [00:03:15.728]with other students.
- [00:03:16.913]You're going to work together
- [00:03:18.248]as a cohort with other students.
- [00:03:20.116]Together, not in competition
- [00:03:22.552]because it's about you achieving
- [00:03:24.204]your excellence here at UNL,
- [00:03:26.055]not about you competing with anyone else.
- [00:03:28.841]And we're here to help you
- [00:03:30.593]achieve that excellence,
- [00:03:32.178]because that's what we do.
- [00:03:34.180]We're helping people
- [00:03:35.298]achieve their excellence
- [00:03:36.683]no matter where they come from,
- [00:03:38.501]in their skills,
- [00:03:39.736]in their background,
- [00:03:40.787]in their communication skills.
- [00:03:42.405]So we really want to see you here.
