- [00:00:01.590]All right, well welcome everyone.
- [00:00:04.200]It is Tuesday night.
- [00:00:05.910]Welcome to your Path to Summer with New Student Enrollment.
- [00:00:10.320]Most of the country had a nice little warmup yesterday,
- [00:00:13.530]cooled down a little bit today here in Nebraska,
- [00:00:15.570]but we have high hopes
- [00:00:16.800]where it's gonna get warmer this weekend.
- [00:00:18.270]So just kind of ebbing and flowing, which is perfectly fine.
- [00:00:22.050]My name is Kayla Tupper.
- [00:00:23.100]You'll be spending a few minutes with me.
- [00:00:24.510]I'm here to welcome you to this webinar
- [00:00:26.700]and then I'll be passing it over to one of my colleagues.
- [00:00:29.550]But you're here tonight because you or your students
- [00:00:33.270]are admitted to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:34.950]So congratulations, you have completed
- [00:00:36.810]a really important step in this whole entire process
- [00:00:39.720]getting admitted to Nebraska.
- [00:00:42.000]I know you're all getting very, very close
- [00:00:43.740]to graduation here, so it's being more and more real
- [00:00:47.760]that you're gonna, you know,
- [00:00:49.020]picking university here eventually.
- [00:00:50.760]So we're just here to provide these webinars
- [00:00:52.410]to help you in this direction.
- [00:00:54.690]Now, tonight, this webinar, it will be recorded.
- [00:00:56.783]We'll be able to have that recording for you later.
- [00:00:59.670]Also tonight, if you have questions,
- [00:01:02.040]we have saved time at the very, very end of our webinar
- [00:01:04.253]for you to ask any questions.
- [00:01:05.910]But feel free to ask questions at your own leisure
- [00:01:08.790]during the session.
- [00:01:10.080]We do have two staff members on the backend
- [00:01:12.300]who are really, really well knowledgeable in this area.
- [00:01:16.170]So they'll answer your questions in real time.
- [00:01:18.510]Now, some of our questions we're gonna save for the end
- [00:01:20.880]because some of your questions are so good
- [00:01:23.130]that we wanna ask them with the rest of the room.
- [00:01:25.770]Now, in order to ask a question,
- [00:01:26.856]you're gonna utilize that Q&A feature
- [00:01:30.900]at the very, very bottom of your Zoom,
- [00:01:33.150]whether you're on your phone or on your computer.
- [00:01:35.160]So go ahead and type in that question into that Q&A
- [00:01:38.610]and then we'll be able to answer the question there.
- [00:01:41.010]Again, we'll save some questions for the live process,
- [00:01:44.640]but that's where you're gonna wanna go ahead
- [00:01:45.990]and enter those questions.
- [00:01:47.610]Now this presentation, we did this once on Thursday,
- [00:01:49.740]so if you're coming back for a second time, welcome back.
- [00:01:53.520]But we finished this in about 25 minutes.
- [00:01:57.030]Now we are here until eight o'clock,
- [00:01:58.770]so if you have so many questions,
- [00:02:00.360]we'll be here until eight o'clock,
- [00:02:01.920]but we'll kind of pinpoint what slows down
- [00:02:04.710]with the questions and we'll end the webinar,
- [00:02:06.390]but you have us until eight o'clock.
- [00:02:09.420]But without further ado, I'll stop talking.
- [00:02:12.120]I'll turn it over to Jenni Brost,
- [00:02:14.446]who is our Director of New Student Enrollment.
- [00:02:17.130]Jenni, go ahead and take it away.
- [00:02:19.950]All right, thank you Kayla, good evening everyone.
- [00:02:22.470]Like Kayla said, my name is Jenni Brost
- [00:02:24.240]and I'm the Director of New Student Enrollment
- [00:02:26.422]and we're really happy you're all here tonight
- [00:02:28.350]to kind of learn about your next steps
- [00:02:30.570]to be a student here at Nebraska.
- [00:02:33.402]So what entails the new student enrollment process?
- [00:02:36.930]Coming to orientation will be a big part of that process
- [00:02:39.630]that will happen this summer for you all,
- [00:02:42.240]having your first academic advising appointment
- [00:02:44.880]and then enrolling in your fall courses,
- [00:02:46.740]those are both two important pieces to the process as well.
- [00:02:50.730]Going through the new student enrollment process,
- [00:02:52.050]you'll learn a lot about the resources
- [00:02:53.730]we have here on campus and all of the support
- [00:02:56.130]that you will get while being a student here at Nebraska.
- [00:02:59.370]You'll be able to connect with other new students
- [00:03:01.843]throughout the orientation process,
- [00:03:03.750]and ultimately we just want you
- [00:03:05.250]to be very prepared for being a Husker.
- [00:03:11.520]This graphic that you see in front of you
- [00:03:13.500]shows you the process that a student goes through
- [00:03:16.830]with the new student enrollment process.
- [00:03:18.180]So the first thing students will do
- [00:03:19.860]is make an orientation reservation.
- [00:03:22.470]Reservations open this year on May 2nd,
- [00:03:24.930]so that's coming up fairly soon.
- [00:03:26.490]That'll be the first thing you can do.
- [00:03:28.590]Students can choose
- [00:03:29.760]an in-person orientation date on May 2nd.
- [00:03:33.591]The next thing you'll do is pre-advising tasks.
- [00:03:36.360]So every single incoming student
- [00:03:38.280]will have to do an Advising Inventory.
- [00:03:40.440]The Advising Inventory is a document that students fill out
- [00:03:43.470]that gives their academic advisor
- [00:03:44.910]some information about them,
- [00:03:46.620]some things about their educational background,
- [00:03:49.344]maybe you took some IB or AP credit,
- [00:03:52.470]maybe a dual enrollment classes in your high school
- [00:03:54.930]or transfer credit from a community college.
- [00:03:57.060]You'll put all of that information
- [00:03:58.387]in that advising inventory so your advisor knows.
- [00:04:01.590]You'll also have the opportunity
- [00:04:02.670]to select some general education courses
- [00:04:05.490]that you might be interested in taking.
- [00:04:07.350]So that way you have a starting point
- [00:04:08.790]so the advisor can talk you through some classes
- [00:04:10.770]that might work well for you and for your major.
- [00:04:13.620]Some of you'll also need
- [00:04:14.790]to do the modern language placement exam
- [00:04:17.130]and the math placement exam.
- [00:04:18.930]This is very dependent on your major.
- [00:04:21.270]So when you sign into MyRED to start this process,
- [00:04:23.820]you'll see if you have to do
- [00:04:25.402]one or both of those placement exams.
- [00:04:28.860]Once these pre-advising tasks are done,
- [00:04:31.465]that'll unlock your advising reservation.
- [00:04:34.710]So that's when you get to choose the appointment type,
- [00:04:37.140]the date and time of your appointment.
- [00:04:39.510]When I say appointment type,
- [00:04:40.530]that means you can do a Zoom appointment
- [00:04:42.150]with your academic advisor
- [00:04:43.650]or you can do an in-person academic advising appointment.
- [00:04:46.560]Totally up to you, all of the colleges
- [00:04:48.330]offer appointments both ways, so you can choose
- [00:04:51.060]which format works best for you.
- [00:04:54.600]All of our advising appointments take place
- [00:04:56.640]between the end of May and mid-July,
- [00:04:59.409]and in that appointment you'll enroll in your fall courses
- [00:05:02.370]with your academic advisor.
- [00:05:04.320]When it comes to orientation, we have 24 days
- [00:05:07.020]available throughout the summer that you can select from,
- [00:05:09.420]those run also end of May through mid-July.
- [00:05:12.180]We also have two Saturday dates,
- [00:05:13.950]so if you work throughout the week
- [00:05:15.120]and you can't make one of our weekday orientation days,
- [00:05:17.632]one of those Saturdays might work best for you,
- [00:05:19.800]so we do offer two of them.
- [00:05:22.500]When you're looking at this graphic, these last two pillars
- [00:05:24.630]of advising appointment and orientation,
- [00:05:26.789]those two things are interchangeable.
- [00:05:28.860]So you can do your advising before orientation
- [00:05:31.200]or after, it doesn't matter.
- [00:05:33.360]They're independent of one another.
- [00:05:34.770]So we really want you to have flexibility
- [00:05:36.840]to choose whichever orientation date works for you.
- [00:05:39.330]Whatever advising appointment works for you.
- [00:05:41.520]So whatever works best for your family,
- [00:05:42.990]go ahead and choose that,
- [00:05:43.920]but you can do them in either order.
- [00:05:49.560]So at in-person orientation,
- [00:05:50.970]this is really what's gonna prepare you
- [00:05:52.320]to be a successful student here on this campus.
- [00:05:55.080]You're gonna learn a lot about being a current student,
- [00:05:58.170]you know, how to be successful here, all of that good stuff.
- [00:06:00.640]If you live within 300 miles of campus,
- [00:06:03.360]you are required to attend in-person orientation.
- [00:06:06.660]We do understand that some people
- [00:06:07.950]might have extenuating circumstance
- [00:06:10.020]and might need to do online orientation.
- [00:06:12.300]You can let us know that,
- [00:06:13.830]and that is an option for some students.
- [00:06:16.710]If you're able to come to in-person orientation,
- [00:06:18.420]though we highly recommend it.
- [00:06:20.160]We highly recommend you to bring your family
- [00:06:22.020]and your parents because we have a parent program as well
- [00:06:24.660]that runs with the student program and they can learn a lot
- [00:06:27.780]about helping you transition to campus as well.
- [00:06:30.390]Orientation is free for students,
- [00:06:31.892]if you bring parents or guests,
- [00:06:33.540]it's going to be $15 per guest for that orientation fee.
- [00:06:42.300]So to reserve an orientation date,
- [00:06:43.740]again, that happens on May 2nd, like I mentioned before,
- [00:06:46.230]you do need to have your enrollment deposit paid that $250.
- [00:06:50.160]I know some of you on this webinar
- [00:06:51.840]have already done that and that's awesome.
- [00:06:53.610]So you're ready to go once May 2nd comes around,
- [00:06:56.190]but that does need to be paid to have access to our process.
- [00:06:59.520]And again, we have those 24 dates that you can choose from
- [00:07:01.950]that run from the end of May through July 11th.
- [00:07:10.380]So what does in-person orientation look like?
- [00:07:13.080]check-in will start at 8:00 AM in the morning,
- [00:07:15.030]and then we usually wrap up
- [00:07:16.380]sometime between 2:30 and three at the end of the day.
- [00:07:19.320]We'll have a welcome session for everybody in the morning.
- [00:07:22.230]We'll have different info sessions,
- [00:07:23.550]some of our campus colleagues present in the morning
- [00:07:25.974]on academic success, how to pay for college,
- [00:07:28.680]and then housing.
- [00:07:30.180]And then everyone will attend a college session.
- [00:07:32.190]So whatever college you're in, you'll go to that session.
- [00:07:34.680]They'll talk to you a little bit about degree requirements,
- [00:07:37.800]maybe things you can get involved in in the college.
- [00:07:39.660]Basically everything you need to know
- [00:07:41.370]by being a student in that particular college.
- [00:07:44.520]In the afternoon, students will do a series of activities
- [00:07:47.160]with their peers where they learn a lot
- [00:07:49.170]about academic success
- [00:07:50.460]and connecting with other people on campus.
- [00:07:52.620]Parents and guests will have
- [00:07:54.090]different departmental presentations they can attend,
- [00:07:57.240]on things like parking, the health center,
- [00:08:00.000]recreation on campus, involvements, study abroad,
- [00:08:03.240]all kinds of different topics for you to attend.
- [00:08:05.936]And then we have some end of the day tasks or appointments.
- [00:08:08.640]So some of you might be members of the honors program
- [00:08:11.858]or learning community or the William H. Thompson Scholars.
- [00:08:16.740]All of those groups will have appointments
- [00:08:19.260]at the end of the day that you can meet with them
- [00:08:20.820]and make sure you're meeting all the requirements
- [00:08:22.902]that they have for their programs.
- [00:08:25.800]We do do a full day in Spanish for parents and guests.
- [00:08:29.220]Students can indicate this on their reservation
- [00:08:32.610]if their parents and guests are interested in this.
- [00:08:34.530]We do have a Spanish specialist on our team
- [00:08:36.870]that will lead those parents and guests throughout the day.
- [00:08:44.340]We know there's a lot of information
- [00:08:46.320]at in-person orientation.
- [00:08:47.550]So something that we put online
- [00:08:49.140]that everybody has access to,
- [00:08:50.820]all parents and family members, is an online orientation.
- [00:08:54.750]This is held in our Canvas system,
- [00:08:56.580]which is our university's learning management system.
- [00:08:59.280]Everybody will have access to this on June 1st,
- [00:09:01.830]so we'll send parents and guests an email about this
- [00:09:04.740]so they can look through it.
- [00:09:06.090]It's on demand
- [00:09:06.923]so you can really look through it at any time.
- [00:09:09.240]It's just kind of a nice resource for you
- [00:09:10.650]before school starts
- [00:09:11.730]to look at things like academic success, Husker life,
- [00:09:15.600]paying for college, some next steps your student might have,
- [00:09:18.660]but it's very comprehensive and can be a great tool
- [00:09:20.850]for you to find information
- [00:09:22.710]before your student comes back in August.
- [00:09:30.000]One special program that we have is Power Up Weekend.
- [00:09:32.880]This year, it's going to take place
- [00:09:34.380]on June 21st through 23rd.
- [00:09:36.600]It's completely optional.
- [00:09:37.830]We have 300 spaces for students in this program.
- [00:09:41.070]It's a nice thing
- [00:09:42.030]if students wanna spend more time on campus.
- [00:09:43.890]We have a one day orientation, but this is a way
- [00:09:46.740]you can stay for the entire weekend with us
- [00:09:48.829]and you know, stay in a residence hall,
- [00:09:50.790]meet other new students, participate in activities,
- [00:09:53.580]learn Husker traditions.
- [00:09:55.710]It really helps you transition to the university,
- [00:09:57.660]especially if you haven't spent a lot of time on campus.
- [00:09:59.961]I think it's really great for students.
- [00:10:02.550]You get really close with your group,
- [00:10:04.050]so you'll definitely leave with a peer group
- [00:10:05.970]that you'll know really, really well.
- [00:10:07.920]Registration for this does open up
- [00:10:09.750]a week before that May 2nd deadline
- [00:10:11.970]that I was talking about earlier.
- [00:10:13.200]So if you're interested in Power Up Weekend,
- [00:10:15.600]you sign up for that on April 25th.
- [00:10:18.060]You do need to make sure your enrollment deposit is paid
- [00:10:20.550]to have access to that,
- [00:10:22.200]but if you sign up for Power Up Weekend,
- [00:10:24.090]you'll have access to June 21st, orientation date.
- [00:10:27.660]So for Power Up Weekend on that June 21st,
- [00:10:29.970]that whole day is Power Up campers
- [00:10:31.710]that go through the orientation day
- [00:10:33.180]and then they just stay with us through the weekend
- [00:10:35.280]for the actual program.
- [00:10:38.040]We also have an optional parent program that weekend.
- [00:10:41.160]So parents, we have some fun things
- [00:10:42.450]planned for you in Lincoln
- [00:10:43.890]if you want to participate in that
- [00:10:45.510]while your student's at Power Up weekend,
- [00:10:47.850]the cost is $250.
- [00:10:49.560]If you are a Pell eligible student, that cost would be $125.
- [00:10:54.270]So a great way to acclimate yourself to campus
- [00:10:56.400]if you wanna spend a little bit more time in Lincoln
- [00:10:58.410]and also on campus.
- [00:11:05.280]So with the advising process, like I mentioned,
- [00:11:07.140]you need to have those pre-advising tasks
- [00:11:09.210]to get access to your advising appointment.
- [00:11:11.310]So make sure you do your advising inventory
- [00:11:13.080]and then placement exams if you need them.
- [00:11:16.020]And then you can sign up for your advising reservation.
- [00:11:19.800]Like I mentioned, those appointments
- [00:11:20.880]are the end of May to July 18th
- [00:11:23.790]and you'll enroll in your classes
- [00:11:26.670]with your academic advisor in this appointment.
- [00:11:29.940]Usually the advising appointments
- [00:11:32.276]take about 45 to 60 minutes.
- [00:11:34.440]It kind of depends on which college you're in,
- [00:11:36.233]what major you are, maybe how much credit you're bringing in
- [00:11:40.050]'cause that usually takes a little bit longer to review.
- [00:11:42.180]So they usually fall within that window.
- [00:11:43.920]Like I said, you can pick an in-person appointment
- [00:11:46.260]or a Zoom appointment.
- [00:11:47.610]You know, last year about 50% of the incoming class
- [00:11:50.310]chose a virtual appointment, and 50% chose an in person.
- [00:11:53.130]So it's really whatever's most flexible for you
- [00:11:55.410]and works in your schedule.
- [00:11:57.270]The advisors will go over all your degree requirements
- [00:11:59.266]in that appointment and then they'll show you
- [00:12:02.130]how to use the enrollment scheduler,
- [00:12:03.630]which is something we use to enroll in classes here.
- [00:12:06.210]And then you'll actually have your fall schedule
- [00:12:08.040]at the end of that appointment.
- [00:12:14.670]Just some things to think about
- [00:12:16.080]before you go through the orientation and advising process.
- [00:12:19.606]Keep thinking about some of those special interest groups,
- [00:12:21.990]like if you're interested in maybe joining Greek Life
- [00:12:24.360]or maybe a learning community,
- [00:12:26.430]you could still look into those things.
- [00:12:28.500]Admitted Student Day is coming up for us on March 23rd.
- [00:12:32.250]This is a great event for incoming students to come to,
- [00:12:34.620]to again, just get more comfortable with campus
- [00:12:36.450]and you'll interact
- [00:12:37.530]with a lot of different departments on campus
- [00:12:39.420]and meet a lot of students as well.
- [00:12:41.370]Registration is open right now for that.
- [00:12:44.580]In late March and early April
- [00:12:46.110]is when financial aid notifications
- [00:12:47.670]are gonna go out to students that filled out the FAFSA.
- [00:12:50.190]If you haven't filled out the FAFSA yet,
- [00:12:51.870]please do that as soon as you can.
- [00:12:53.550]We do encourage all students to fill out the FAFSA.
- [00:12:56.790]April 1st is the first housing contract priority deadline.
- [00:13:00.030]Again, that process is open, so if you haven't done that,
- [00:13:02.550]please do that as soon as you can.
- [00:13:05.040]And on May 1st, FAFSA form priority deadline is happening
- [00:13:08.670]again, fill out FAFSA if you haven't done so.
- [00:13:11.220]And then May 2nd is our big day
- [00:13:12.990]here at new student enrollment.
- [00:13:14.040]That's when you can start signing up
- [00:13:15.540]for your orientation date for the summer
- [00:13:17.640]and then start those pre-advising tasks,
- [00:13:19.530]so you can also sign up
- [00:13:21.090]for your advising appointment this summer.
- [00:13:24.210]Some things to think about and do before orientation
- [00:13:26.730]is submit your immunization records,
- [00:13:28.380]you can do this in MyRED, also uploading an NCard photo.
- [00:13:32.550]So when you come to orientation,
- [00:13:33.900]you can pick up your student ID card,
- [00:13:35.640]that's what we call the NCard.
- [00:13:36.840]So that'll be all ready for you
- [00:13:38.520]if you upload your photo beforehand.
- [00:13:40.860]And also you can sign
- [00:13:42.120]the Health Center Power of Attorney form.
- [00:13:43.860]So when you're here as a student
- [00:13:45.113]and you need to be treated at the health center,
- [00:13:47.220]maybe you get sick, you do need
- [00:13:48.930]that Power of Attorney form signed.
- [00:13:50.970]We will talk about all of these things at orientation,
- [00:13:54.180]but if you can get some of these things done
- [00:13:55.857]before orientation, it makes orientation day
- [00:13:57.990]just a little bit smoother.
- [00:14:03.750]If you have any questions,
- [00:14:05.430]we do have a lot of information on our website.
- [00:14:07.950]All of the things I talked about tonight are on our website
- [00:14:10.980]and you can review those, whether it's orientation,
- [00:14:12.900]advising, the dates we have,
- [00:14:15.360]more information about Power Up Weekend,
- [00:14:17.700]you can find that on our website.
- [00:14:18.990]Or if you'd like to email us, you can.
- [00:14:21.030]Our email's there on the screen, it's nse@unl.edu.
- [00:14:25.650]All the information on there
- [00:14:28.350]is a lot of the things we talked about tonight,
- [00:14:29.880]but like, there's a few extra things that we didn't touch on
- [00:14:32.070]that you can explore on our website as well.
- [00:14:38.100]Well, thank you everyone.
- [00:14:39.120]I hope you got more information about your next steps
- [00:14:42.510]with new student enrollment and orientation and advising.
- [00:14:45.030]I'm gonna turn it back over to Kayla
- [00:14:46.500]and she's gonna talk to you
- [00:14:47.460]about a few more opportunities we have
- [00:14:49.260]later in the summer for other webinars.
- [00:14:52.200]Thank you so much, Jenni, for your time.
- [00:14:54.180]Again, we recorded this, so if you're like, (gasps)
- [00:14:56.258]like to see it again, we did record it.
- [00:14:58.710]We do have some upcoming webinars
- [00:15:00.063]just to help you prepare you and your student
- [00:15:03.300]or your student, your family
- [00:15:04.980]as you're navigating this decision.
- [00:15:06.510]So in April we'll have two webinars,
- [00:15:09.150]detailing, interpreting your financial aid offer.
- [00:15:13.050]Like Jenni just mentioned, we would encourage
- [00:15:14.940]all of our families to fill out the FAFSA
- [00:15:16.470]so please go ahead and do so.
- [00:15:18.570]We know that we are getting that information
- [00:15:20.250]hopefully soon here, so we are prepared
- [00:15:22.350]to get that information and release federal aid packages.
- [00:15:26.730]And then as you go through graduation,
- [00:15:29.100]enjoy all those parties, commencement,
- [00:15:31.710]just really exciting time.
- [00:15:33.210]But as you prepare during the summertime
- [00:15:35.010]to actually come to the university,
- [00:15:37.020]we wanna make sure we prepare you for move-in.
- [00:15:39.450]So in July, in the middle of July,
- [00:15:41.100]we're hosting two Husker Home: Move-in editions.
- [00:15:44.640]So if you want more information
- [00:15:45.900]about what you can bring to campus,
- [00:15:48.150]what is moving gonna look like,
- [00:15:50.190]all that information's gonna be there.
- [00:15:52.770]In the chat I'm gonna put in our admitted Huskers webpage.
- [00:15:56.880]So this is a good opportunity
- [00:15:58.200]for all admitted Huskers to go to.
- [00:16:02.010]There's a lot of great information, timely information
- [00:16:04.590]as you all prepare for the end of senior year.
- [00:16:07.500]You prepare throughout the summer and into the fall
- [00:16:09.810]starting classes in August.
- [00:16:11.910]So this is just a great opportunity,
- [00:16:13.338]a great webpage to bookmark.
- [00:16:15.750]It's changing with all these new deadlines and everything.
- [00:16:17.760]So we really encourage you to kind of take a look at that
- [00:16:20.820]so we can help prepare you.
- [00:16:23.310]Alright, so we are at our question portion.
- [00:16:27.480]Our backend.
