- [00:00:03.319]My name is Kristy Weissling,
- [00:00:04.637]and I'm a professor of practice
- [00:00:06.222]in the Department of Special Education
- [00:00:07.841]and Communication Disorders.
- [00:00:09.726]I've been here at UNL for about 20 years,
- [00:00:13.113]and prior to coming to UNL,
- [00:00:14.764]I worked at another university
- [00:00:17.067]where I was a instructor
- [00:00:19.486]and taught many courses
- [00:00:20.854]and worked in our clinic.
- [00:00:22.822]When I came to UNL
- [00:00:23.957]I worked in our clinic
- [00:00:25.325]quite a bit.
- [00:00:26.326]Now I have more administrative roles
- [00:00:28.995]within the department
- [00:00:30.463]and the thing that really attracted me
- [00:00:32.799]to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:34.684]was the opportunity
- [00:00:36.269]to engage in research projects
- [00:00:38.405]that have real clinical implication
- [00:00:40.206]for patients.
- [00:00:41.318]Here at UNL I am involved
- [00:00:43.276]in teaching classes
- [00:00:44.744]about individuals
- [00:00:46.362]who've had strokes,
- [00:00:47.497]traumatic brain injuries
- [00:00:48.698]and other
- [00:00:49.783]kinds of insults to the brain.
- [00:00:52.819]And I teach the course in aphasia,
- [00:00:55.271]which is my absolute passion,
- [00:00:57.640]as well as a class in dementia
- [00:00:59.893]and a class in cognition and language,
- [00:01:02.479]which is co-taught with several
- [00:01:04.264]other members of the faculty.
- [00:01:06.132]We have a really unique
- [00:01:07.567]curriculum at our graduate level
- [00:01:09.769]because many of our core
- [00:01:11.137]courses are taught with experts
- [00:01:13.773]who are combining their knowledge
- [00:01:15.942]to create the best
- [00:01:16.876]possible course for students.
- [00:01:19.256]My area of expertise and research focus
- [00:01:21.881]is actually in augmentative
- [00:01:23.650]and alternative communication
- [00:01:25.535]and how that can be utilized
- [00:01:28.204]to help people with aphasia
- [00:01:29.522]improve their communication skills.
- [00:01:31.741]We find that people who end up
- [00:01:34.360]having aphasia
- [00:01:35.161]often have difficulty
- [00:01:36.429]with communication,
- [00:01:37.347]and augmentative communication
- [00:01:39.466]can be a real assistance to them.
- [00:01:43.311]I've been doing this work
- [00:01:45.155]since I very first graduated.
- [00:01:47.407]I'm an alumni
- [00:01:48.158]of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:50.260]And the work at UNL is unique
- [00:01:53.746]because we were one of
- [00:01:55.148]the original colleges
- [00:01:56.649]in the United States
- [00:01:57.784]that worked in the area
- [00:01:58.685]of augmentative communication,
- [00:02:00.253]and we have several
- [00:02:01.571]other experts on staff here
- [00:02:03.790]who are working to help people meet
- [00:02:05.441]their communication needs.
- [00:02:07.177]The thing that I like
- [00:02:08.261]about our department
- [00:02:09.579]and CEHS is the collegiality.
- [00:02:12.765]We're trying to create a culture
- [00:02:14.117]in our department
- [00:02:15.151]where when you walk into the building,
- [00:02:16.753]you feel like you are home
- [00:02:18.454]and I feel like I'm home.
- [00:02:20.073]I've been here for many years
- [00:02:21.791]and I came back here
- [00:02:24.027]because of the culture and the place
- [00:02:26.830]and the people.
- [00:02:28.064]Here every person and every interaction
- [00:02:30.466]matters and we mean that.
