- [00:00:00.300]Greg Sharpe back at our AKRS Broadcast Center at halftime of
- [00:00:02.790]the Huskers matchup tonight in Columbus against the Ohio State
- [00:00:05.490]Buckeyes. And we're delighted to be joined by the Dean of the
- [00:00:08.760]College of Business for the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:11.220]Kathy Farrell. Congratulations, Kathy on the College of
- [00:00:13.920]Business, big anniversary, 110 years this fall. Right?
- [00:00:17.760]Thanks. We are very proud of our long history of preparing
- [00:00:21.180]students to lead the future of business. We are also very
- [00:00:24.840]grateful for the support of our community and the state. In
- [00:00:28.350]fact, Nebraska was one of the first states to establish the
- [00:00:31.440]Center for Entrepreneurship more than 35 years ago.
- [00:00:34.440]Let's talk more about that what kind of some of the benefits of
- [00:00:37.020]having a designated university wide Center for
- [00:00:40.230]Entrepreneurship.
- [00:00:41.460]So the center is housed in Hawks Hall, but we're here for the
- [00:00:46.350]entire university. It's a hub for students who want to pursue
- [00:00:49.860]their own ideas for a business dream of owning a franchise or
- [00:00:53.910]taking over their family business or even exploring their
- [00:00:56.760]career options. Our award winning faculty teach courses on
- [00:01:00.810]entrepreneurship and innovation and serve as advisors, mentors
- [00:01:05.100]and collaborators for 1000s of students each year. enrollments
- [00:01:09.270]in the center entrepreneurship classes have increased 45% In
- [00:01:14.010]the last five years, and the number just keeps on growing
- [00:01:16.830]That
- [00:01:17.160]is impressive. What what sets the university apart in this
- [00:01:20.280]particular space.
- [00:01:21.990]Our students learn by doing inside and outside of the
- [00:01:24.840]classroom through workshops, hands on competitions and more
- [00:01:29.070]world leaders and cross campus collaboration and in providing
- [00:01:32.970]immersive opportunities for students. We have multiple
- [00:01:36.960]individualized entrepreneurship programs throughout the
- [00:01:39.450]university and the center connects them all. We celebrate
- [00:01:43.680]and support all student entrepreneurs regardless of
- [00:01:46.530]their major career aspirations. We
- [00:01:48.000]are busy with UNL Dean of College of Business Dean Kathy
- [00:01:52.680]Farrell here at halftime, does the Center, Dean do they provide
- [00:01:57.450]funding for entrepreneurial effort? We
- [00:01:59.460]do, students can compete in Center hosted entrepreneurial
- [00:02:03.167]competitions to raise capital for future or existing
- [00:02:05.570]Oh yeah, absolutely. All right. How do you how do you engage the
- [00:02:06.555]businesses. We award more than $65,000 per year to students who
- [00:02:10.646]pursue starting a business. The Center also provides nearly
- [00:02:14.481]$20,000 annually in scholarships. We've established
- [00:02:17.805]a student led Husker Venture Fund so early-stage
- [00:02:20.937]entrepreneurs from across the state can apply for the
- [00:02:24.389]investment. Our students learn about venture capital, while
- [00:02:28.224]providing funding to early stage entrepreneurs throughout the
- [00:02:32.187]state of Nebraska. It's a win win. And so I encourage all of
- [00:02:36.086]those early stage entrepreneurs from across Nebraska to apply
- [00:02:40.049]for an investment for the Husker Venture Fund.
- [00:02:45.860]community and then contribute to economic development.
- [00:02:49.170]The center is fortunate to have a strong relationship with a
- [00:02:52.350]group of 60 Community fellows who enrich the student
- [00:02:55.830]experience through mentoring, guest lecturing and classes and
- [00:02:59.310]judging competitions. Many of those fellows are alums, and
- [00:03:02.940]most of them have their own businesses that were founded
- [00:03:05.970]here in Nebraska. So for example, we have Nebraska
- [00:03:09.000]Business graduates who founded Hudl, Home Instead, Opendorse.
- [00:03:14.730]We also have alums who serve as CEOs of national companies that
- [00:03:18.600]are based here in Nebraska, Scooter's Coffee, Nelnet,
- [00:03:22.020]Empower Brands, so we contribute to the state and the ecosystem
- [00:03:27.180]through our alums and through our cultivation of future alums.
- [00:03:30.900]Sounds like a lot of momentum around entrepreneurship here at
- [00:03:33.360]Nebraska doesn't it?
- [00:03:34.540]There definitely is. And with continued collaboration and
- [00:03:37.510]support from our Nebraska business community, we continue
- [00:03:40.960]to drive momentum. So students start at Nebraska for
- [00:03:44.320]entrepreneurial success. Entrepreneurship is the future
- [00:03:48.730]and we are building entrepreneurs like only Nebraska
- [00:03:52.420]can. If any listeners out there want to learn more, they can
