- [00:00:12.759]Nebraska Extension held its second annual
- [00:00:15.054]Incredible STEM Day. The day featured
- [00:00:17.449]hands-on activities incorporating
- [00:00:19.262]science, technology, engineering,
- [00:00:21.369]and mathematics.
- [00:00:22.787]Nathan Rice, Nebraska Extension 4-H educator said
- [00:00:26.070]This one was really put together through
- [00:00:27.950]the Panhandle 4-H team. And so each of
- [00:00:30.482]us kind of created a lesson, we had, we
- [00:00:33.005]didn't like two of them last year. So
- [00:00:34.536]we made two new ones this year. Both
- [00:00:36.234]in microbits and coding drones. So far
- [00:00:37.528]it looks like it's going great.
- [00:00:39.519]The students from Mitchell Elementary,
- [00:00:41.530]and two Gering elementarys, Northfield
- [00:00:44.102]and Lincoln. Attended four sessions for
- [00:00:46.407]about an hour each where they studied
- [00:00:48.501]drones, microbits, mineral properties,
- [00:00:51.195]and biomedical technology.
- [00:00:52.964]Really when we designed this day,
- [00:00:55.880]we wanted it to be things that schools
- [00:00:57.726]couldn't get normally. So, we wanted it to
- [00:01:00.068]be high end technology using things that
- [00:01:03.123]most people don't have, and so when we
- [00:01:05.328]were thinking about the lessons. We tried
- [00:01:07.223]to find, uh, tried to capture all of the
- [00:01:09.409]engineering design process in the STEM
- [00:01:12.178]categories. For laparoscopic surgery its
- [00:01:15.244]this idea of creation, right. Can you
- [00:01:17.443]design a tool that will match your
- [00:01:19.163]feature and then to see how hard it
- [00:01:20.947]truly is to be a doctor. An how skilled
- [00:01:22.679]those arts really are. So, that's kind of
- [00:01:24.758]how we diversified it.
- [00:01:27.157]Rice said both the teachers and the kids
- [00:01:29.414]found the day a blast, as the students
- [00:01:30.899]were engaged and worked on
- [00:01:32.317]projects until the last minute.
