- [00:00:05.330]A UNL mission to space could revolutionize surgery
- [00:00:08.040]for rural Nebraskans.
- [00:00:09.130]Ignition, engines full power, and lift off.
- [00:00:14.090](indistinct)
- [00:00:16.316]UNL, UNMC, and NASA teamed up
- [00:00:19.165]to fly the first surgical robot
- [00:00:21.065]to the International Space Station.
- [00:00:23.520]Engineering professor Shane Farritor and his team
- [00:00:25.920]designed and built the small robot,
- [00:00:28.170]which they will control remotely from Lincoln.
- [00:00:30.780]It will do several maneuvers in microgravity,
- [00:00:33.120]including pulling and dissecting simulated tissue.
- [00:00:36.270]If the mission is successful, it will pave the way
- [00:00:38.640]for remote surgery in places like rural Nebraska.
- [00:00:41.443]So on earth, remote surgery could be very powerful.
- [00:00:44.216]It's a ways off in the future,
- [00:00:46.616]but you can imagine so many hospitals in Nebraska
- [00:00:50.550]where a specialist or a specialized surgeon isn't available.
- [00:00:55.170]And if you could have someone dial in from a distance
- [00:00:57.360]and assist with the surgery, we can get people to stay home
- [00:01:00.240]and get better access to the care they need where they live.
- [00:01:04.830]Farritor's ultimate goal
- [00:01:06.030]is to make every operating room robot ready.
- [00:01:08.643]UNL gets a $5 million grant from the USDA
- [00:01:12.690]to learn about cow burps.
- [00:01:14.190]A Husker research team studies animal genetics, nutrition,
- [00:01:17.130]and the gut microbiome
- [00:01:18.493]to find ways to lower methane emission from cattle.
- [00:01:22.328]Depending on the animal size and diet,
- [00:01:24.780]a cow can belch 200 to 500 liters of methane daily.
- [00:01:28.816]Methane is a greenhouse gas.
- [00:01:30.829]University extension will use the research
- [00:01:33.477]to develop better breeding and feeding practices.
- [00:01:36.516]With the start of spring semester,
- [00:01:38.790]UNL students are back on campus,
- [00:01:40.800]and so is a familiar voice at mealtimes.
- [00:01:42.856]Hi, everybody, welcome, welcome.
- [00:01:46.506]Come on in.
- [00:01:49.680]Make yourself at home.
- [00:01:52.693]Gretchen Hamilton works
- [00:01:53.526]at the Willa Cather Dining Complex.
- [00:01:55.830]Most days, she serves desserts with a side of cheer.
- [00:01:58.800]Her favorite part of the job?
- [00:02:00.210]Getting to know the students.
- [00:02:02.100]I love you UNL College kids.
- [00:02:03.840]We have the best kids in the world.
- [00:02:06.933]They are so kind, they are so nice.
- [00:02:10.950]And I just really wanna be a place
- [00:02:12.930]where everybody feels welcomed and loved,
- [00:02:15.810]irregardless of who they are,
- [00:02:17.456]and just make it a safe, enjoyable experience for everybody.
- [00:02:21.990]Tuesday through Saturday.
- [00:02:24.210]Hamilton's goal for every student she meets
- [00:02:26.090]is to see them graduate.
- [00:02:27.750]Hamilton has worked at Cather Dining Hall since 2020.
- [00:02:30.510]UNL Engineering students wrap up their first week of classes
- [00:02:34.740]with a high flying contest.
- [00:02:36.780]About 50 students, faculty, and staff
- [00:02:39.150]launched paper airplanes from a balcony
- [00:02:40.950]in the atrium of newly opened Kiewit Hall.

- [00:02:45.870]with paper supplied by the college.
- [00:02:47.880]Their target?
- [00:02:48.840]A large bulls eye two floors down.
- [00:02:51.060]The winning design was a super skinny aircraft
- [00:02:53.400]created by a software engineering student.
- [00:02:56.220]That's what's happening this week at UNL.
- [00:02:58.350]I'm Mackenzie Noble.
