- [00:00:00.690]Hi, my name is Rachel Larson
- [00:00:02.520]and I'm the Assistant Dean
- [00:00:03.840]of Academic and Career Development
- [00:00:05.550]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln College of Business.
- [00:00:08.880]One of the areas I oversee is our business career center,
- [00:00:11.910]and one of my passions is working
- [00:00:13.950]with our students on their career development
- [00:00:15.690]and helping them find their career paths.
- [00:00:18.120]I'm joined today by one
- [00:00:19.290]of our fabulous international students, Bruno Salles,
- [00:00:22.740]who's here to tell us a little bit
- [00:00:23.970]about his internship.
- [00:00:25.200]Welcome, Bruno.
- [00:00:26.250]Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here, Rachel.
- [00:00:28.410]Well, why don't you start by telling us
- [00:00:29.850]where you're from and what your major is.
- [00:00:32.010]Absolutely.
- [00:00:32.843]So, I'm originally from Brazil
- [00:00:34.770]and I came here to Nebraska for college in 2021.
- [00:00:38.730]And I'm studying accounting, I'm a junior now.
- [00:00:40.830]That's great.
- [00:00:41.760]Now I know that you've had
- [00:00:42.870]a really great internship experience,
- [00:00:44.730]can you tell us what you did as an intern
- [00:00:46.950]and where you interned at?
- [00:00:48.570]Yeah, absolutely.
- [00:00:49.620]So, I interned at Deloitte during this last summer
- [00:00:54.210]and I worked as a discovery tax intern,
- [00:00:57.180]which is a little bit different
- [00:00:59.040]than the standard accounting internship that you see.
- [00:01:02.400]And in accounting you usually have that question
- [00:01:05.820]that every single accounting student has,
- [00:01:08.340]which is audit or tax, and it's a big conflict for us.
- [00:01:12.570]So this discovery internship is special for sophomores
- [00:01:17.400]and they have the chance to understand
- [00:01:19.260]and get to know the industry
- [00:01:20.910]before actually making that final decision
- [00:01:23.520]on what industry they wanna work if it's audit or tax.
- [00:01:27.660]So, I work mostly understanding the industry,
- [00:01:30.810]doing that working events, and working on projects
- [00:01:33.390]with fellow Discovery interns.
- [00:01:35.850]So it sounds like you got exposure to responsibilities
- [00:01:39.570]that were associated with both the tax side
- [00:01:41.460]of accounting and audit, correct?
- [00:01:43.020]Yes.
- [00:01:43.853]Oh, that's really great.
- [00:01:45.240]So how did you find your internship?
- [00:01:47.580]So, it's actually an interesting study.
- [00:01:50.550]I might even sound scripted
- [00:01:51.990]because I ended up founding my internship
- [00:01:54.810]because of the BSAD 222 PrEP Class
- [00:01:58.410]that we have here in the College of Business.
- [00:02:00.150]Yeah.
- [00:02:00.983]It was the start of my sophomore year.
- [00:02:03.780]So, I wasn't really looking very avidly for internships,
- [00:02:08.040]but I knew that in that class I would have an interview
- [00:02:11.820]with one of the employers.
- [00:02:13.680]And since I was an accounting major,
- [00:02:15.480]I was thinking to myself, I might as well just get one
- [00:02:18.720]of the big accounting firms and see what it's like.
- [00:02:22.050]And as I enrolled to be in that mock interview
- [00:02:26.160]that we have in that class,
- [00:02:27.450]I started researching more of the company,
- [00:02:29.550]looked over in Handshake,
- [00:02:30.810]the internships they had available
- [00:02:32.640]and they had one for sophomores, perfect.
- [00:02:34.740]Yeah.
- [00:02:35.573]I kept doing my research
- [00:02:37.080]and went for the interview very prepared,
- [00:02:41.340]and I was very well received by how my performance was.
- [00:02:49.500]And they told me that I should apply
- [00:02:51.360]to the actual interview and I did.
- [00:02:54.210]And from there everything kinda worked out.
- [00:02:57.030]Oh, what a storybook story like that's great.
- [00:03:00.420]Well, you did mention
- [00:03:01.320]the Professional Enhancement Program courses.
- [00:03:03.780]So the College of Business
- [00:03:06.150]has a program called the Professional Enhancement Program,
- [00:03:09.120]or PrEP as we like to call it for short.
- [00:03:11.520]And this is a series of four classes designed
- [00:03:14.700]to help you learn more about yourself,
- [00:03:17.190]how to find internships and jobs,
- [00:03:19.230]and then how to transition to life after college.
- [00:03:22.170]So, what has been the most valuable part
- [00:03:24.540]of those PrEP classes for you?
- [00:03:27.570]It's a lot, it's actually a lot.
- [00:03:29.610]I think those PrEP classes really help set the tone
- [00:03:34.980]for what a Nebraska business student is.
- [00:03:38.460]So, I think it started with the resume in the PrEP class
- [00:03:42.420]that I found out about Deloitte.
- [00:03:45.497]There was a big focus on the resume building
- [00:03:48.000]and I saw from the get-go when I talked to the employer,
- [00:03:52.020]how the resume was very well built
- [00:03:54.150]and would definitely help me get in the door
- [00:03:57.450]'cause that's the main thing you wanna do once you
- [00:03:59.850]have your application done.
- [00:04:01.410]So resume building is definitely a huge thing.
- [00:04:04.710]I also think that preparing for the interview is huge.
- [00:04:09.660]I later on did the BSAD 333,
- [00:04:12.630]which focus a little bit more on interviewing prep.
- [00:04:15.540]And it really helps you not be as nervous,
- [00:04:19.230]be ready to ask good questions
- [00:04:21.510]and just lead a good impression into the employers.
- [00:04:25.140]So I think you just become this more confident
- [00:04:29.580]and professional student
- [00:04:31.737]for your career once you complete those classes.
- [00:04:34.290]That's what we like to hear.
- [00:04:35.610]Yeah.
- [00:04:36.443]Especially 'cause that was the purpose of the classes
- [00:04:38.730]so to know that they're doing their job is really wonderful.
- [00:04:41.160]Yeah.
- [00:04:43.230]Talking back about your internship,
- [00:04:45.540]what do you feel that was your biggest accomplishment
- [00:04:47.970]in your internship?
- [00:04:49.650]I think the thing that I'm most proud of
- [00:04:51.660]is the connections I've built,
- [00:04:53.730]especially being an internship that had trips
- [00:04:57.300]and conferences that you met I interns
- [00:04:59.280]from all over the country.
- [00:05:01.170]I never kept myself from introducing myself
- [00:05:05.220]to someone and going to talk with people
- [00:05:07.410]from different places and perspectives.
- [00:05:09.960]So just getting to meet not only interns,
- [00:05:12.600]but also more senior employees at Deloitte
- [00:05:16.830]helped me expand my network
- [00:05:18.090]and expand my knowledge
- [00:05:19.140]and just completely change my perspective
- [00:05:21.210]on what accounting is, what Big four is,
- [00:05:23.790]and what the industry is.
- [00:05:25.500]So is your internship located in Nebraska
- [00:05:27.750]and then you got to travel in other places
- [00:05:29.580]or how did that work?
- [00:05:30.810]Yes.
- [00:05:31.643]So, I was in the Omaha based office,
- [00:05:34.590]but I got to travel twice,
- [00:05:36.840]once to training in the Dallas office.
- [00:05:41.010]And also Deloitte has a facility called Deloitte University
- [00:05:44.910]where they host all the company wide training
- [00:05:48.450]and over 300 interns were at this conference.
- [00:05:51.167]Oh, that's cool. From all over the country.
- [00:05:52.650]And we had three days of speakers talking to us
- [00:05:58.800]and development training.
- [00:06:00.090]And also, there was free Starbucks, which was amazing.
- [00:06:04.320]We can always use a free Starbucks.
- [00:06:05.760]Yes, you can always use a free Starbucks.
- [00:06:08.700]Well, what skills did you develop as an intern
- [00:06:12.120]that you think you're gonna use in your future career?
- [00:06:15.390]I should say networking since that's the thing
- [00:06:17.910]that I mentioned that I'm most proud of.
- [00:06:20.610]I think just knowing the right people
- [00:06:24.660]on that wherever industry you are in whatever point
- [00:06:27.540]of your life is definitely huge.
- [00:06:29.190]So just how knowing to present yourself,
- [00:06:31.140]having your elevator pitch.
- [00:06:32.700]I know it's something we talk a lot here
- [00:06:35.070]in the college of business.
- [00:06:36.720]Besides from networking,
- [00:06:37.800]I also think that teamwork is a huge thing.
- [00:06:41.310]Every company will tell you that teamwork is very essential
- [00:06:45.750]for any position.
- [00:06:47.370]So, being able to work in a project with a solid team,
- [00:06:50.940]working online as well, I working with people
- [00:06:53.430]in Minneapolis, you have to develop those skills
- [00:06:56.550]to manage time and how to handle conflict
- [00:06:59.430]as well through a Zoom screen.
- [00:07:01.890]And, I would also say communication skills
- [00:07:06.120]is definitely something I hear more and more
- [00:07:08.040]for professionals when I ask questions
- [00:07:09.840]that your fundamental technical classes are important,
- [00:07:14.040]but when it comes to writing an email
- [00:07:17.010]or presenting an important topic for a client,
- [00:07:20.610]or handling sales, communication's just huge.
- [00:07:24.270]So just getting yourself out there
- [00:07:25.800]and being in front of people, asking good questions
- [00:07:29.520]and just improving those communication skills
- [00:07:32.100]was huge for me.
- [00:07:33.450]Great, well thanks for sharing your internship
- [00:07:36.180]and your story, Bruno.
- [00:07:37.410]We love having you part of the Nebraska business family
- [00:07:39.930]and just enjoyed learning about everything today.
- [00:07:42.390]Yeah, thank you, it was a pleasure to share it.
