[00:00:02.801]and this week’s Extension Update.
[00:00:04.481]January through April there are several meeting occurring for
[00:00:07.555]farmers and ranchers to attend to increase their knowledge of
[00:00:10.424]their business but also to achieve all those license and certifications needed.
[00:00:14.850]One certification that individuals that reside in the Upper Elkhorn or
[00:00:18.850]Lower Niobrara Natural Resource District is needing is Nitrogen Certification.
[00:00:23.590]Nitrogen Certification is issued through the natural resource district
[00:00:27.227]is required of any farmer or rancher that is applying more than 50 lbs
[00:00:31.097]per acre of nitrogen on their property.
[00:00:33.733]This certification process is required to help mitigate nitrogen in particular
[00:00:37.503]nitrate loss into the groundwater and is required every 4 years.
[00:00:41.503]Groundwater contamination with nitrate is a growing
[00:00:43.933]concern for residents in the area.
[00:00:45.942]According to the Environmental Protection
[00:00:47.942]Agency and the Center of Disease Control,
[00:00:50.483]when drinking water exceeds 10 parts per million of nitrate,
[00:00:53.432]a water treatment system must be installed.
[00:00:56.253]The consumption of water exceeding 10 parts per million nitrate can
[00:00:59.883]lead to the development of a syndrome called Baby Blues
[00:01:03.345]which impacts children the first few years of life.
[00:01:05.931]Baby blue syndrome occurs when the nitrate molecule binds to
[00:01:09.159]hembiglobin where oxygen normally attaches and is moved through the body.
[00:01:13.239]With the lack of oxygen moving through the body,
[00:01:15.679]a child’s lip will turn blue.
[00:01:17.547]Lack of oxygen to the brain can cause developmental delays.
[00:01:21.601]For individuals needed to get certified or become recertified for their nitrogen
[00:01:25.601]certification, they can attend the upcoming Bazile Groundwater
[00:01:29.079]Management Area Winter Meeting.
[00:01:30.945]This meeting is being hosted by Nebraska Extension, Upper Elkhorn NRD,
[00:01:36.059]Lower Niobrara NRD, Lewis & Clark NRD, Lower Elkhorn NRD
[00:01:42.886]and Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy are sponsoring this program
[00:01:48.103]on Tuesday January 30th, 2024 at Orchard Community Center
[00:01:52.587]or the Old Orchard Public School Gym in Antelope County.
[00:01:56.067]We are excited to host this face-to-face winter meeting
[00:01:58.695]to discuss nitrogen management and soil health.
[00:02:01.028]The winter meting will be held at Orchard Community Center
[00:02:05.297]located at 406 E. 4th Street in Orchard, Nebraska.
[00:02:09.327]Registration for the meeting will start at 10:30 am and
[00:02:12.594]conclude around 2 pm with lunch provided.
[00:02:14.680]Participants will be able to receive nitrogen certification or if you
[00:02:18.803]are needing Certified Crop Advisor hours are also available.
[00:02:22.988]Presentation and discussion will include: The Ins and Outs of the Vadose Zone
[00:02:26.978]from Dr. Dan Snow, from the University of Nebraska, an Informal ‘Farmer to
[00:02:32.138]Farmer’ Discussion, and a conclusion with Soil Health
[00:02:35.288]from Robert Noonan, Northeast Community College.
