- [00:00:01.290]Hello, my name is Donny Bui,
- [00:00:03.270]academic success coach
- [00:00:04.710]with the Center for Academic Success and Transition,
- [00:00:07.950]also known as CAST.
- [00:00:09.810]I wanted to welcome you all
- [00:00:10.890]to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:13.290]and share some information about our office
- [00:00:15.540]and the student services that we provide.
- [00:00:20.280]The friendly faces you see on the screen are the CAST staff,
- [00:00:23.367]and we want you to become very familiar with these faces.
- [00:00:27.090]These are the people who would love to help you learn
- [00:00:29.400]how to navigate and be successful here at UNL.
- [00:00:32.880]The CAST team meets with thousands of students each year,
- [00:00:36.450]and we love being able to get to know you
- [00:00:38.820]and to help you find answers to your questions
- [00:00:41.340]and navigate the issues that may arise
- [00:00:43.620]during your time here at UNL.
- [00:00:48.420]So what are some of the reasons
- [00:00:50.250]that students come and talk to us?
- [00:00:53.040]Here are just a few things that we hear from students
- [00:00:55.800]when they come see us.
- [00:00:57.937]"I'm falling behind in classes.
- [00:01:00.180]I don't know what to take notes on.
- [00:01:02.220]I don't understand what my professors want.
- [00:01:05.070]I'm just really overwhelmed.
- [00:01:07.260]I've never failed the test before,
- [00:01:09.210]but I just failed my first one.
- [00:01:11.730]I don't know how to study.
- [00:01:13.770]I always did well in school.
- [00:01:15.450]I don't know why I'm struggling."
- [00:01:18.090]Students find their way into our office
- [00:01:20.130]in a lot of different ways.
- [00:01:21.840]Some students see us at a campus
- [00:01:23.600]or a classroom presentation.
- [00:01:25.680]Other students hear about us from friends, family,
- [00:01:28.890]their advisor or their professors.
- [00:01:31.560]Some students might come to us in a panic
- [00:01:33.750]after the first round of exams didn't go well.
- [00:01:36.660]Some students come visit us before classes even start
- [00:01:39.810]because they wanna start off on a good foot.
- [00:01:42.780]However they find us,
- [00:01:44.160]we've never had a student that regretted coming in
- [00:01:46.350]for an appointment.
- [00:01:48.090]In fact, most students come back to see us,
- [00:01:51.120]setting appointments to check in with the coaches,
- [00:01:53.670]now and then to work on new skills
- [00:01:55.860]or even just to have someone who can hold them accountable.
- [00:02:02.460]The CAST office and our team of coaches
- [00:02:04.620]are here to help your transition to college.
- [00:02:07.290]We work with all students here at UNL.
- [00:02:10.530]We wanna make sure you have the knowledge, the tools
- [00:02:13.410]that you need to be successful
- [00:02:14.790]throughout your time here at UNL,
- [00:02:16.800]and also the skills you need to have
- [00:02:18.540]to thrive after graduation.
- [00:02:20.850]We work with students on everything
- [00:02:22.380]from time management and study skills
- [00:02:24.720]to critical thinking and test preparation.
- [00:02:27.690]We're also really great at just answering questions
- [00:02:30.720]and getting students connected to other resources on campus.
- [00:02:34.230]If you have questions
- [00:02:35.190]and you don't know who to ask or where to go,
- [00:02:37.950]CAST is a great place to start.
- [00:02:40.290]We're master troubleshooters.
- [00:02:41.940]While we may not have all the answers,
- [00:02:44.430]we will help find someone that can help you.
- [00:02:49.980]One of the things we help students understand
- [00:02:52.020]is that the expectations are different here in college.
- [00:02:55.590]Two things we like all students to know right away
- [00:02:58.320]is that their professors are guides,
- [00:03:00.360]but it's up to the students to do the work.
- [00:03:03.210]Many students are used
- [00:03:04.230]to being able to do most of their work in class
- [00:03:06.870]with the teachers leading the way
- [00:03:08.580]and answering questions and concerns all in class.
- [00:03:12.360]In college, students are expected to do 80% of the work
- [00:03:15.990]outside of class time
- [00:03:17.460]on their own time.
- [00:03:19.500]We like to have students to start thinking about their time
- [00:03:22.980]and where it's going.
- [00:03:24.840]Time management is very important in college
- [00:03:27.870]because what a lot of students don't really understand
- [00:03:30.360]coming into college
- [00:03:31.530]is what it actually looks like to do 80% of the work
- [00:03:34.980]outside of class time on their own time.
- [00:03:39.930]So we break it down and try to make it simple
- [00:03:42.420]with what we call the 2:1 study ratio,
- [00:03:45.660]which basically says,
- [00:03:47.070]for every credit hour a student is taking,
- [00:03:49.680]they should expect to spend a minimum of two hours
- [00:03:52.530]outside of class study.
- [00:03:55.170]So if a student signed up
- [00:03:57.030]for 15 credits hours worth of classes,
- [00:04:01.230]they should expect to spend at least 30 hours
- [00:04:04.020]outside of class studying each week.
- [00:04:08.610]To further illustrate what this looks like for you,
- [00:04:12.120]let's take a look at a college schedule.
- [00:04:14.760]This is an example of the college class schedule.
- [00:04:17.820]When first looking at a college schedule,
- [00:04:19.800]it looks really great on paper.
- [00:04:21.780]You're probably thinking, wow, look at all this free time.
- [00:04:25.530]It may look like you have a lot of free time
- [00:04:27.540]in our schedule,
- [00:04:28.740]but in reality,
- [00:04:29.970]we have not put in all of our expected study time
- [00:04:32.970]and other obligations.
- [00:04:37.260]Remember, we talked about doing 80% of the work
- [00:04:39.930]outside class on your own,
- [00:04:41.940]and the fact that you should expect
- [00:04:43.260]to spend a minimum of two hours studying each week
- [00:04:46.170]for every credit hour.
- [00:04:48.570]This is more realistic.
- [00:04:50.850]Here's an example of a study schedule
- [00:04:52.650]with some of that study time filled in.
- [00:04:55.590]Along with work hours,
- [00:04:56.820]if a student decide to get a job,
- [00:04:59.190]we have some tutoring hours,
- [00:05:00.990]we have meal times, club and residential hall meeting times.
- [00:05:05.430]Basically, anything that takes time outta your day
- [00:05:07.950]should be included.
- [00:05:09.720]Notice how it doesn't look as quite as awesome
- [00:05:12.060]as it did just a minute ago
- [00:05:13.830]when all we had penciled in was our class time.
- [00:05:16.920]But this is the reality of being a college student.
- [00:05:20.100]Being a student is a full-time job,
- [00:05:22.530]and students should expect to put in some full-time hours
- [00:05:26.040]if you're going to be a good student
- [00:05:28.020]to pass your classes and eventually graduate.
- [00:05:31.200]So we've got to make sure
- [00:05:32.730]we're treating our job as a student
- [00:05:35.070]as our number one priority.
- [00:05:37.380]We've got copy of these blank study scheduled available
- [00:05:40.230]on our website,
- [00:05:41.340]and we encourage you all to think about
- [00:05:43.140]what a healthy schedule might look like for you.
- [00:05:46.200]Put a good routine in place
- [00:05:47.640]at the beginning of the semester,
- [00:05:49.170]and you'll thrive.
- [00:05:51.720]Okay, these were just some of the things
- [00:05:53.820]that the CAST office can help you with.
- [00:05:55.980]Let's take a few minutes to talk about the ways
- [00:05:58.290]that you can get connected with our staff.
- [00:06:03.480]One of the unique ways that we support students
- [00:06:05.820]is through academic success coaching.
- [00:06:08.550]Students can make appointments to meet one-on-one
- [00:06:11.130]with a member of the CAST staff.
- [00:06:13.170]We love getting to know our students
- [00:06:15.180]and talking to them about their goals,
- [00:06:17.250]help troubleshoot issues they might be facing in classes
- [00:06:20.460]or on campus,
- [00:06:21.900]and to put together an action plan
- [00:06:23.580]to help them develop the skills and strategies they need
- [00:06:26.790]to be successful.
- [00:06:28.410]These meetings can happen once
- [00:06:30.000]to focus on something specific,
- [00:06:32.130]or students can schedule follow-up appointments
- [00:06:34.410]to work on goals or skill development.
- [00:06:37.650]Our most common coaching topics
- [00:06:39.210]include things like time management, study skills,
- [00:06:43.200]test preparation, reading strategies,
- [00:06:46.170]and note taking skills.
- [00:06:48.030]We even occasionally talk to students
- [00:06:49.740]about stress management and homesickness.
- [00:06:52.740]Students can schedule a coaching appointment online,
- [00:06:55.590]or they can stop in our office or call our office.
- [00:07:00.030]The steps to make an appointment are listed on our website.
- [00:07:06.570]Did you know that our office provides free tutoring
- [00:07:09.540]to all students?
- [00:07:11.370]Study Stop is free tutoring service offered by CAST.
- [00:07:14.670]Study Stop is available for students
- [00:07:16.440]throughout the week, Monday to Friday,
- [00:07:19.020]in person and on Zoom.
- [00:07:21.360]Students can schedule a one-on-one appointment
- [00:07:24.060]or attend drop-in tutoring hours
- [00:07:26.250]if they need help on a quick question,
- [00:07:28.290]want more comprehensive subject support
- [00:07:30.840]or are preparing for an upcoming exam.
- [00:07:34.410]We do our best to support students in various subjects
- [00:07:37.200]including math, chemistry, biology,
- [00:07:39.900]psychology, and statistics.
- [00:07:42.300]We encourage you to check our website, success.unl.edu,
- [00:07:46.980]to see the updated schedules,
- [00:07:49.140]including what subjects are offered.
- [00:07:54.090]What I really want you to remember today
- [00:07:56.040]is that there's always someone here to help.
- [00:07:58.770]There are so many great resources and offices
- [00:08:01.380]here on campus,
- [00:08:02.850]and we are all here to help support students
- [00:08:04.980]through this college journey.
- [00:08:07.110]Again, if you have a question
- [00:08:09.300]and you don't know where to go or who to ask,
- [00:08:11.820]the CAST office is a great place to start.
- [00:08:14.730]If it's not something we can help you with ourselves,
- [00:08:17.250]we know how to get you connected to someone that can.
- [00:08:20.610]You can follow us across social media platforms
