- [00:00:02.970]Hello everyone, my name is CJ.
- [00:00:05.430]I am one of the specialists
- [00:00:07.590]at the UNL International Student and Scholar Office.
- [00:00:10.830]Today, in this video, we are going
- [00:00:12.810]to cover important information you need to know
- [00:00:16.290]as a new international student to understand
- [00:00:19.179]and maintain your F-1 status while you are
- [00:00:22.110]studying in the United States.
- [00:00:28.410]But first I wanna start by welcoming you
- [00:00:30.600]to the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:33.330]and tell you how excited everyone at the ISSO is
- [00:00:36.450]for you to join our community.
- [00:00:38.580]Please feel free to contact us at any time.
- [00:00:40.936]You can find our phone number, email,
- [00:00:43.808]and advising instructions on this slide.
- [00:00:47.190]We have appointments available
- [00:00:48.960]through the Student Success Hub,
- [00:00:50.580]and our walk-in hours are from 2:00 to 4:00 PM each week,
- [00:00:55.020]Monday through Thursday.
- [00:00:59.760]So it is important to understand that as an F-1 student
- [00:01:02.997]you are responsible for your immigration status,
- [00:01:06.570]but ISSO is here to help.
- [00:01:09.077]To start, you should understand that to maintain your status
- [00:01:13.650]you must maintain a valid passport and I-20.
- [00:01:17.850]We will talk more about the I-20 in just a second.
- [00:01:22.380]If you are traveling internationally,
- [00:01:24.690]you should maintain a valid F-1 visa
- [00:01:27.330]for entry to the United States.
- [00:01:30.450]You should enroll in a full-time course load,
- [00:01:33.360]we will also talk about this in a second,
- [00:01:36.030]and attend your classes.
- [00:01:38.430]Make normal progress toward your degree.
- [00:01:41.940]Do not work off-campus without prior authorization.
- [00:01:46.920]And finally, have a valid and current US address.
- [00:01:51.060]You should report any changes
- [00:01:52.410]to your US address via MyRED within 10 days of moving.
- [00:01:59.340]All right, so we are going
- [00:02:00.570]to talk now about some important documents
- [00:02:03.000]that you should always keep in a safe place.
- [00:02:06.390]Of course, your passport.
- [00:02:08.820]You should always have a valid passport
- [00:02:11.808]and it should be valid for at least six months
- [00:02:14.310]into the future to allow for international travel.
- [00:02:18.060]If you find that your passport is expiring soon,
- [00:02:21.450]you should start by contacting
- [00:02:23.220]your home country's government to see what your options are
- [00:02:27.480]for obtaining a new passport.
- [00:02:31.440]Next, your US visa.
- [00:02:33.977]This grants you permission to enter
- [00:02:36.870]or reenter the United States to study
- [00:02:39.360]as a full-time student.
- [00:02:42.210]Your visa can expire while you are in the United States.
- [00:02:47.010]This is okay and it does not impact your status
- [00:02:50.820]to have an expired visa in your passport.
- [00:02:54.750]It is only required for entry and you can remain in the US
- [00:02:58.950]as long as you are maintaining F-1 status
- [00:03:01.710]by following all of the rules we are talking about now.
- [00:03:05.850]However, if you travel internationally during your program,
- [00:03:10.020]you will need to renew your F-1 visa,
- [00:03:12.660]if it has expired, to reenter the US.
- [00:03:19.710]More documents, your I-94.
- [00:03:23.730]This shows the date that you arrived in the United States
- [00:03:27.540]and what status you entered in.
- [00:03:30.630]For F-1 students, your I-94 should say duration of status,
- [00:03:35.640]or DS, to show that you can stay in the United States
- [00:03:39.930]if you maintain F-1 status.
- [00:03:44.250]You can obtain your I-94 online
- [00:03:47.340]through the government website here.
- [00:03:49.440]We also have instructions to obtain your I-94
- [00:03:53.087]in the ISSO check-in form,
- [00:03:55.099]which we'll talk about in a little bit.
- [00:03:59.610]Your I-20, which everyone should have issued by UNL,
- [00:04:04.687]contains information about you,
- [00:04:07.277]your school, your academic program,
- [00:04:10.388]and your program start and end dates.
- [00:04:15.117]So your I-20 has to be valid for the duration
- [00:04:18.196]of your program.
- [00:04:20.550]If you plan to travel internationally,
- [00:04:23.520]it also has to be signed for travel on the second page
- [00:04:27.540]for return to the United States.
- [00:04:35.130]So any changes to your I-20
- [00:04:37.680]should be reported to the ISSO immediately
- [00:04:40.410]so that we can issue a new document for you.
- [00:04:43.380]Changes would include transferring to another school,
- [00:04:48.037]change of degree program, change of major,
- [00:04:52.787]change in your financial support stated on the I-20.
- [00:04:57.750]And then also if you need to extend your studies
- [00:05:00.690]beyond the end date listed on the I-20,
- [00:05:04.320]you need to apply for an I-20 extension.
- [00:05:07.740]So make sure that you are familiar with the information
- [00:05:11.340]on your I-20, that it is accurate,
- [00:05:14.160]and if there is any change to that information,
- [00:05:16.590]report it to the ISSO.
- [00:05:22.740]So next point to maintain your F-1 status,
- [00:05:25.830]it's very important that you have to enroll
- [00:05:28.440]in a full course of study each fall and spring semester.
- [00:05:34.410]So for undergraduate students,
- [00:05:36.150]full-time study is defined as 12 credit hours.
- [00:05:42.720]Only one online course or three credit hours
- [00:05:46.230]can count toward your full-time enrollment requirement.
- [00:05:50.040]In other words, at least nine credit hours
- [00:05:53.340]have to be in person each fall and spring semester.
- [00:06:00.120]You have to complete these courses each semester.
- [00:06:04.800]Grades of W do not count as completion,
- [00:06:08.010]but a failing grade would.
- [00:06:13.230]If you need to drop below full-time enrollment
- [00:06:15.450]for any reason, contact the ISSO
- [00:06:18.600]before you withdraw from your courses
- [00:06:21.060]and before you drop below full-time.
- [00:06:25.140]Dropping below full-time enrollment
- [00:06:27.060]without authorization from the ISSO
- [00:06:30.600]is a serious violation of your status.
- [00:06:37.710]Next, you must be making normal progress
- [00:06:40.080]toward completing your degree.
- [00:06:42.420]So typically that means
- [00:06:43.980]that you are maintaining a full-time course load,
- [00:06:46.950]as we just discussed, and completing the courses needed
- [00:06:50.259]for your program each semester.
- [00:06:56.010]Next we will talk a little bit about employment
- [00:06:58.410]and how you can work in the US while you are an F-1 student.
- [00:07:03.240]You can work on campus
- [00:07:05.610]without any special authorization from the ISSO
- [00:07:09.360]or the government.
- [00:07:11.019]Off-campus employment might be possible
- [00:07:14.229]if you have authorization.
- [00:07:18.240]So first, on campus employment,
- [00:07:20.550]again, you do not need special authorization.
- [00:07:24.150]It is limited to 20 hours per week during the semester.
- [00:07:28.440]During the summer or official university breaks,
- [00:07:31.890]you can work full-time or over 20 hours per week,
- [00:07:35.799]but you need permission from your supervisor first
- [00:07:38.850]to see if this is an option for you.
- [00:07:42.240]If you need a social security number
- [00:07:45.139]for payment and tax purposes working on campus,
- [00:07:49.290]we have instructions on our website to apply.
- [00:07:54.450]Off-campus employment options include
- [00:07:57.060]curricular practical training, optional practical training,
- [00:08:01.080]and severe economic hardship.
- [00:08:04.320]Please note that the first two options are only available
- [00:08:08.040]to degree seeking students.
- [00:08:10.260]Students in English language training programs
- [00:08:12.480]are not eligible for practical training.
- [00:08:16.500]We have a lot of information on our website
- [00:08:19.967]about the off-campus employment options.
- [00:08:22.650]If you have questions, we recommend that you start
- [00:08:25.200]by reviewing that information
- [00:08:27.450]and then speak with an ISSO specialist.
- [00:08:30.390]But importantly, do not work off-campus
- [00:08:34.148]without authorization.
- [00:08:36.267]If you are not sure, you can always contact the ISSO
- [00:08:40.987]and we can help you determine your options.
- [00:08:47.520]So if you move during your program,
- [00:08:51.174]you are required to report your new US address
- [00:08:55.020]to us within 10 calendar days.
- [00:08:58.890]You can do this by changing your current
- [00:09:01.230]or local address in MyRED.
- [00:09:07.950]Remember that while you are studying here in the US,
- [00:09:11.760]you are subject to all US state
- [00:09:14.760]and local laws that US citizens are subject to.
- [00:09:18.660]So this is in addition to all the other rules
- [00:09:21.390]that we are talking about in this video
- [00:09:24.870]that pertain to your immigration status,
- [00:09:27.450]so those laws and regulations.
- [00:09:32.820]Next, we want to warn you to look out
- [00:09:36.450]for scams targeting international students.
- [00:09:39.330]Unfortunately, this does sometimes happen
- [00:09:42.997]that people might try to take advantage of you
- [00:09:46.860]while you are here studying in our country.
- [00:09:50.790]So remember that the government will never call
- [00:09:54.960]or email you asking for money.
- [00:09:58.560]If you are contacted by anyone asking, for example,
- [00:10:02.820]for an immigration tax or to buy gift cards,
- [00:10:06.368]hang up, delete the email,
- [00:10:08.866]and report the encounter to the ISSO.
- [00:10:12.510]The government has helpful tips in this link as well
- [00:10:16.470]to avoid and report scams if unfortunately you are
- [00:10:19.950]contacted by somebody.
- [00:10:25.170]So next we will talk a little bit about travel,
- [00:10:28.650]travel in the US.
- [00:10:30.810]So domestic travel between US states
- [00:10:34.206]and territories is okay during your program.
- [00:10:38.640]International travel is also allowed as long as you will be
- [00:10:42.210]outside the United States for less than five months.
- [00:10:45.870]So if you will travel internationally during your program,
- [00:10:49.200]you'll need the documents that we discussed earlier,
- [00:10:53.580]which is a passport at least six months
- [00:10:56.340]valid into the future.
- [00:10:59.310]A valid I-20 with a travel signature on the second page.
- [00:11:03.630]That travel signature should be within the past six months.
- [00:11:08.250]And a valid F-1 visa.
- [00:11:10.290]If you need to renew your visa,
- [00:11:12.390]information is available at this website here.
- [00:11:16.080]You would start by following the instructions
- [00:11:19.080]from the US embassy or consulate where you will apply.
- [00:11:25.560]So after you complete your program,
- [00:11:27.750]you have a few options within 60 calendar days.
- [00:11:32.400]That time is available for you to prepare
- [00:11:35.370]to depart the United States.
- [00:11:37.770]You can also, in that 60 day grace period,
- [00:11:41.100]you can transfer to another school or a new program
- [00:11:45.000]or you can apply for optional practical training, OPT,
- [00:11:49.230]to work in the US after graduation.
- [00:11:51.870]Again, this is only an option for degree seeking students,
- [00:11:55.380]not for students in English language programs.
- [00:12:01.410]All right, so we are almost done here.
- [00:12:04.620]We do want to remind you to check in with the ISSO.
- [00:12:08.970]We have an online check-in that you need to
- [00:12:11.160]complete your immigration requirements.
- [00:12:14.370]We need to report your arrival to the US government.
- [00:12:16.980]So it is really important that you follow this link here
- [00:12:22.110]to submit the check-in form
- [00:12:23.340]and we will activate your SEVIS record
- [00:12:25.860]and complete that check-in for you.
- [00:12:31.080]So again, the ISSO is always here to help,
- [00:12:33.840]contact us with any immigration related questions.
- [00:12:37.347]Always better to ask us before you make any decisions
- [00:12:42.395]so that we can make sure you have the accurate information
- [00:12:45.900]and are making the best decision for you.
- [00:12:49.080]We also have a lot of information on our website,
- [00:12:51.870]so I would encourage you to visit that website
- [00:12:56.010]and read if you have any questions.
- [00:12:59.310]You can always start there
- [00:13:01.265]and then ask us if you want to discuss more.
- [00:13:06.330]Finally, just sharing where is the ISSO.
- [00:13:10.170]We are in the Global Education Center,
- [00:13:12.540]which is in Louise Pound Hall 130 on the first floor.
- [00:13:17.070]So you can always call or email us to get in touch.
- [00:13:21.210]Again, appointments are through the Student Success Hub
- [00:13:24.990]and then walk-in advising, you do not need an appointment.
- [00:13:29.670]Monday through Thursday between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
- [00:13:32.610]Come to our location at Louise Pound Hall
- [00:13:35.130]and we are happy to assist you.
- [00:13:39.690]So that is the end of the ISSO presentation
- [00:13:42.960]on understanding and maintaining your F-1 status.
- [00:13:46.500]Again, thank you for listening
- [00:13:48.630]and if you have any questions at all,
- [00:13:50.640]feel free to get in touch.
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
