- [00:00:36.749]A mentor is someone who is there to help
- [00:00:39.889]out their mentees. Where whenever they
- [00:00:42.531]need help and guidance, you are there to
- [00:00:44.871]provide it for them. Some of things we
- [00:00:47.841]have to do as LC mentors are we host study
- [00:00:50.341]hours as well as we just plan some fun
- [00:00:52.441]events so that way our mentees can have
- [00:00:54.821]some de-stress in their busy first
- [00:00:56.937]semester of college.
- [00:00:58.207]So, as a mentor, mainly what I do is I
- [00:01:00.277]gather my students and I give them
- [00:01:01.949]opportunities - real-world opportunities -
- [00:01:03.969]in the field of
- [00:01:04.684]what their major is,
- [00:01:05.639]what their interest is, and
- [00:01:06.923]trying to get them
- [00:01:07.788]connected into the
- [00:01:08.643]community. But, other
- [00:01:09.663]than that, we try to build their
- [00:01:11.193]relationships as a Learning Community
- [00:01:13.003]where they live. So, my Learning
- [00:01:14.533]Community, for instance, lives in Abel 11,
- [00:01:16.533]and my goal is to get them to build
- [00:01:18.213]relationships with one another so that way
- [00:01:20.211]they can have those connections further on
- [00:01:22.631]in the field. Just building relationships,
- [00:01:24.866]getting them connections in the field,
- [00:01:26.999]getting them applied their first year of
- [00:01:28.970]college giving them a head start.
- [00:01:30.731]One of the events that we planned this
- [00:01:32.671]semester for the Chemistry Learning
- [00:01:34.341]Community was a research symposium. So
- [00:01:36.881]what we did is I brought in a few
- [00:01:38.457]professors, and they worked with the
- [00:01:40.177]students to create little research
- [00:01:41.797]presentations on some different techniques
- [00:01:43.797]that they would use in labs or like in
- [00:01:45.607]their professions in the future. So,
- [00:01:47.327]basically, our major role is to help the
- [00:01:49.796]students learn what their major is and how
- [00:01:53.916]to apply it.
- [00:01:54.776][Instrumental music]
- [00:02:00.843]My favorite part about being a mentor is
- [00:02:03.621]the peer connections I make. I love
- [00:02:06.671]meeting there with my mentees; I see them
- [00:02:08.711]all the time on campus, and their like
- [00:02:10.667]friendly faces I get to see. Also, I like
- [00:02:13.000]the relationships I've created with the
- [00:02:15.010]staff and faculty members here at UNL, and
- [00:02:17.380]these relationships will last me longer
- [00:02:19.470]than I will be here at UNL.
- [00:02:21.203]My favorite part is the relationships I've
- [00:02:23.213]built with the students. I really wasn't
- [00:02:25.123]expecting to get to
- [00:02:26.043]know them that well,
- [00:02:27.003]but I feel like I've
- [00:02:28.013]been able to get know
- [00:02:29.012]all of them on
- [00:02:29.712]a very personal level.
- [00:02:30.762]I get to see them every week between the
- [00:02:32.692]events and the Floor Hours, and we just
- [00:02:34.548]have a lot of fun. We've had game nights,
- [00:02:36.498]movie nights, stuff like that,
- [00:02:37.938]and get to know them
- [00:02:38.938]in a much more personal level
- [00:02:40.328]than you normally would
- [00:02:41.428]in a role like this, I think.
- [00:02:42.808]My favorite part about being a mentor is
- [00:02:44.938]definitely I just get to have a lot of fun
- [00:02:46.938]with my job. My co-workers are so amazing
- [00:02:49.871]and so fantastic, and fun to work with, as
- [00:02:51.991]well as my mentees. They are a really fun
- [00:02:54.621]group of kids, and it's their first time
- [00:02:57.551]in college, and so we get that connection
- [00:02:59.771]with them because you haven't been in
- [00:03:02.021]college for necessarily that much longer
- [00:03:03.941]than them, so it's a really nice, fun way
- [00:03:05.921]to bond as students, and it's enjoyable.
- [00:03:08.671][Instrumental music]
- [00:03:14.461]I wish I would have known how much I
- [00:03:16.551]would've needed to know about other
- [00:03:18.231]majors. My LC is a lot of majors that are
- [00:03:21.771]outside of my expertise, but my biggest
- [00:03:24.551]advice is "don't be afraid to go to your
- [00:03:26.461]fellow co-workers for what their advice to
- [00:03:29.459]them would be because they might have a
- [00:03:32.719]better answer than you would."
- [00:03:34.169]Don't expect every mentee to be as
- [00:03:36.989]involved as your most involved mentees.
- [00:03:39.319]A lot of the times, these students, they
- [00:03:41.229]have lives outside of the Learning
- [00:03:42.852]Community, and we try to respect that, and
- [00:03:45.413]I've been very fortunate that my Learning
- [00:03:47.553]Community has been the most involved
- [00:03:49.813]Learning Community I've seen in a long
- [00:03:51.623]time - my own included when I was in the
- [00:03:53.673]Learning Communities. Just the amount of
- [00:03:56.023]involvement that they have, I'm very
- [00:03:57.763]fortunate, but don't take it too hard on
- [00:03:59.693]yourself if there's one student that isn't
- [00:04:01.696]getting involved as the other students,
- [00:04:03.606]and just recognizing that's not your fault
- [00:04:05.606]and just understanding that not everyone's
- [00:04:07.666]going to be involved and be grateful for
- [00:04:09.586]the ones that are involved.
- [00:04:10.876][Instrumental music]
- [00:04:15.446]One benefit for being a Peer Mentor is the
- [00:04:18.336]connections that you make with the
- [00:04:19.956]facility members, your fellow mentors,
- [00:04:24.219]also your mentees, and the other faculty
- [00:04:28.069]and staff that you meet, as well as
- [00:04:32.069]prominent members here at UNL's campus and
- [00:04:35.089]in Lincoln. Also, one good thing that you
- [00:04:38.259]get is three meal swipes, as long as you
- [00:04:40.519]remember to say you're using an
- [00:04:42.329]"Admin Swipe."
- [00:04:43.039]The best part about being a mentor is the
- [00:04:45.109]connections that you build in the LC.
- [00:04:48.179]Whether that's the staff in the LC, the
- [00:04:50.779]foundation your Learning Community is
- [00:04:52.929]based in, or the college, just building
- [00:04:54.799]your circle early in your college life is
- [00:04:57.659]super crucial, and we get to do that; not
- [00:04:59.709]only as mentors, but mentees as well; they
- [00:05:02.419]get to do that. Plus, the food benefits
- [00:05:04.279]are great as well, and you get to build a
- [00:05:06.249]flexible schedule. There's not too much
- [00:05:08.109]stress with it; it's an easy-going job
- [00:05:09.919]that I enjoy, I get paid to do it, and I
- [00:05:11.859]get to build those connections and help
- [00:05:13.719]these freshman through
- [00:05:14.779]their first year of college.
- [00:05:16.119][Instrumental music]
