- [00:00:26.097]has been a mainstay event for farmers to connect and share knowledge.
- [00:00:29.920]For the third year, the conference is a collaborative partnership with
- [00:00:33.230]University of Nebraska Extension and Nebraska Specialty Crop Growers
- [00:00:36.770]to provide the most dynamic and comprehensive farming
- [00:00:39.930]and local food systems conference in the state.
- [00:00:43.521]“Combining both Extension and Nebraska Sustainable Ag Society’s
- [00:00:46.911]efforts has allowed the organizing team to think creatively about how we engage
- [00:00:51.021]this audience and build connections across the food value chain,” said Ben Jewell,
- [00:00:55.922]a Nebraska Extension educator and lead for the Nebraska
- [00:00:58.437]Regional Food Systems Initiative.
- [00:01:01.072]“Our attendees come from a wide range of backgrounds,
- [00:01:03.002]as farmers, ranchers, food entrepreneurs, advocates and researchers - this diverse
- [00:01:07.348]group being together over two days allows for more robust conversations
- [00:01:10.118]that get at the root of the challenges facing our local food system.”
- [00:01:14.465]The conference invites attendees to learn, connect, and
- [00:01:17.925]collaborate for a more resilient food future.
- [00:01:21.165]Conference highlights include:
- [00:01:23.089]More than 30 sessions on topics that span the agricultural and
- [00:01:26.789]local food system spectrum, including farm financial and
- [00:01:29.669]transition planning, farm skills, field crops, livestock, farm and
- [00:01:34.219]food policy, urban agriculture and local food access, and more.
- [00:01:39.491]New Thursday pre-conference workshops that will provide more
- [00:01:42.321]in-depth training in regional food systems,
- [00:01:45.025]communication, and farm/ranch resources.
- [00:01:48.654]Keynote addresses from Nancy Williams, Co-Founder and CEO of No More Empty Pots
- [00:01:54.084]in Omaha and Michael Foley, co-owner and operator of Green Uprising Farm, a very
- [00:01:59.363]small, diversified, family farm in Willits, northern California.
- [00:02:04.177]There will also be several opportunities to network with
- [00:02:07.297]other farmers, researchers, sponsors, service agencies, and consumers
- [00:02:11.469]including a Friday evening reception and exhibit hall.
- [00:02:15.209]Many of the sessions are developed and led by local farmers, focused on topics
- [00:02:19.379]that are most relevant to small and mid-size food and farming operations.
- [00:02:24.423]Other sessions focus on tribal food systems work in Nebraska,
- [00:02:28.743]indigenous Mayan regenerative agriculture practices,
- [00:02:31.652]and how chefs incorporate seasonally available local foods into their menus.
- [00:02:36.060]“A highlight of this conference is the local food dinner that is
- [00:02:39.449]served on Friday evening,” said Jewell.
- [00:02:41.779]“Conference organizers work with chefs at the venue to plan a meal that is
- [00:02:45.779]entirely sourced from local producers.
- [00:02:49.087]Everything from local beef, small batch cheeses,
- [00:02:51.727]fresh greens, and even local grains are featured in this meal.”
- [00:02:56.026]The cost to attend the conference is $80 per day or $150 for both days,
- [00:03:01.267]and includes meals and access to all conference events.
- [00:03:04.496]Scholarships are available.
