- [00:00:00.680]This is Amy Timmerman with Nebraska Extension and this week’s Ag Update.
- [00:00:05.040]The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has updated a digital tool to make it easier
- [00:00:09.360]for ag producers to determine appropriate nitrogen rates for individual fields.
- [00:00:14.447]The nitrogen tool allows users to input specifics for a producer’s
- [00:00:18.193]individual fields, including soil characteristics,
- [00:00:21.150]soil nitrate sampling data, organic matter, irrigation
- [00:00:25.040]practices and economic information.
- [00:00:27.567]The university designed the software to provide easy-to-access information sources
- [00:00:32.446]to aid in the producer’s decision-making, drawing on decades of
- [00:00:36.176]nitrogen management analysis and recommendation.
- [00:00:39.376]Producers can access the new tool at CropWatch.unl.edu.
- [00:00:45.290]The tool automates a process that previously relied on
- [00:00:48.630]paper documents and Excel spreadsheets.
- [00:00:51.121]Ultimately, the update is intended to help producers
- [00:00:53.641]increase profitability and environmental stewardship.
- [00:00:57.021]The web-based tool provides robust, user-friendly capability
- [00:01:01.199]to help producers set a yield goal under the university’s recommendation.
- [00:01:05.814]Andrew Stech, who operates a farm in Osmond,
- [00:01:08.441]was among the early testers of the digital tool.
- [00:01:11.161]He described the app as “an easy-to-use tool that
- [00:01:14.349]will help farmers fine-tune their nitrogen applications
- [00:01:17.879]and maximize yield while minimizing the amount of
- [00:01:20.516]nitrogen needed, which increases profitability.
- [00:01:23.465]“There are so many factors in farming that can affect nitrogen efficiency,” Stech said.
- [00:01:28.455]“Lack of time and labor is a major issue in farming, and this app helps
- [00:01:32.836]address the issue of keeping track of how much nitrogen each field needs.”
- [00:01:36.940]Another early tester was Jon Walz, who farms near Stapleton, Nebraska.
- [00:01:41.688]Nebraska agriculture is “in a whole new era” that
- [00:01:45.608]requires efficient digital tools such as the new app, he said.
- [00:01:49.135]He especially liked that the app enables users to save and recall
- [00:01:53.135]their field data, which enables efficiency and ease of use.
- [00:01:58.059]Other additional features: A producer can input data for each specific field.
- [00:02:03.113]Once data is entered and a nitrogen rate is set, the
- [00:02:06.503]app provides information on a producer’s anticipated nitrogen-use efficiency.
- [00:02:11.122]In addition to the nitrogen rate recommendation, the software
- [00:02:14.802]provides breakdowns of product needed per acre, total product
- [00:02:18.212]needed for the field and product costs.
- [00:02:20.792]The app will be adjusted and updated over time.
- [00:02:23.902]The software will collect limited and generalized
- [00:02:26.392]user data to support improvements.
- [00:02:28.446]Producers can opt in to provide more detailed
- [00:02:31.354]information and help the university better understand
- [00:02:33.974]user behavior and performance.
- [00:02:35.974]The new app is part of a range of technologies to support
- [00:02:39.484]nitrogen management, including variable-rate application tools,
- [00:02:42.924]sensor-based management, aerial imagery and fertigation.
- [00:02:46.973]More questions regarding the revised tool,
- [00:02:49.597]please reach out to your local extension office.
