- [00:00:00.000]Students from Bridgeport, Kimball,
- [00:00:01.895]Bayard, and Morrill were “Connecting the
- [00:00:03.889]Dots” on Nov. 30, at the Prairie Winds
- [00:00:06.780]Community Center in Bridgeport.
- [00:00:08.624]Sarah Paisley, 4-H educator for Garden
- [00:00:11.145]and Morrill Counties, explained more
- [00:00:13.466]on the career simulation.
- [00:00:15.313]We really try to challenge kids to think
- [00:00:17.553]beyond. Um, We give them cards that are
- [00:00:20.545]luck of the draw, so sometimes they get a
- [00:00:23.062]drop out of high school. Um, some of them
- [00:00:25.548]are going to be eligible to go to a
- [00:00:27.208]four-year school. But they really have to
- [00:00:28.793]process umm, decisions that could help them
- [00:00:32.250]or hinder them in finding a successful
- [00:00:35.128]job that meets their criteria. This
- [00:00:38.272]morning, we spent our time learning
- [00:00:40.407]about soft skills. So, they learned
- [00:00:42.012]how to write a resume,
- [00:00:43.001]do interviews, and networking.
- [00:00:45.698]Paisley said the simulation makes the
- [00:00:47.846]students really think about careers and
- [00:00:49.875]moving in those directions.
- [00:00:51.603]A lot of times, though, we have kids come
- [00:00:53.748]back and tell us about how it helped them
- [00:00:55.971]understand that even as a freshman that
- [00:00:59.401]they can pick classes at their high school
- [00:01:01.307]level to prepare them for college courses that
- [00:01:04.614]they might need to take. We also really
- [00:01:07.447]encourage kids to do job shadowing and
- [00:01:09.329]internships. And, so we do see some of
- [00:01:11.549]those kids reach out to these employers
- [00:01:14.163]and end up working for them as a summer
- [00:01:16.430]job or just job shadowing during the school year.
- [00:01:20.111]Connecting the Dots has been held at six
- [00:01:22.281]sites around the Panhandle this year.
- [00:01:24.360]The simulation also looks at how life
- [00:01:26.820]can create challenges, from having
- [00:01:28.712]triplets to a job loss because of downsizing,
- [00:01:31.521]and how to meet those challenges.
- [00:01:33.922]With the UNL Panhandle Research Extension
- [00:01:36.292]and Education Center in Scottsbluff,
- [00:01:38.432]I’m Chabella Guzman.
