- [00:00:05.040]Revitalizing retail in downtown Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.770]Professor Sonya Turkman's collaborate studio
- [00:00:10.410]is working with city planners,
- [00:00:12.030]Collin Christopher and Stephanie Rouse,
- [00:00:14.280]along with local preservationist Dan Worth
- [00:00:17.010]to explore new possibilities for this historic block.
- [00:00:20.850]Old City Hall is a beautiful building, lots of history.
- [00:00:24.600]But to a large extent,
- [00:00:26.250]it's underused as a space when we think
- [00:00:28.470]about the larger downtown environment.
- [00:00:30.600]Because of that, one of the goals of this project
- [00:00:32.520]is really to think about that better use
- [00:00:35.190]and how we could use both the building
- [00:00:37.830]and the block itself in a more effective way
- [00:00:40.260]that really contributes to that downtown environment
- [00:00:42.990]that we're looking for.
- [00:00:44.040]So Old City Hall used to be a courthouse in a post office.
- [00:00:48.060]Our teams are re-imagining it as a retail space.
- [00:00:51.810]For example, my team is turning it
- [00:00:54.600]into a health retail center,
- [00:00:56.910]so we're calling it the Health Hub.
- [00:00:59.130]And inside we're having a grocery store, a pharmacy,
- [00:01:03.240]a salad and juice bar, some workout studios.
- [00:01:06.810]We're also integrating biophilic design
- [00:01:09.630]by including an interior courtyard
- [00:01:12.900]and an exterior healing garden.
- [00:01:15.330]What I like about this project,
- [00:01:16.890]it's a real project that exists in downtown Lincoln.
- [00:01:20.850]And there are some restrictions
- [00:01:23.670]that we cannot, like, mess with,
- [00:01:25.020]like the historic preservation on it.
- [00:01:27.330]So with that, we have to be more creative
- [00:01:31.470]with working with this design.
- [00:01:33.480]So as we go through this process
- [00:01:35.400]and look at some of the early designs for the students,
- [00:01:37.950]I think one of the things that really stands out
- [00:01:40.050]is just kind of that out of box thinking
- [00:01:42.660]that you often see with young professionals,
- [00:01:45.900]or in this case, students who are learning
- [00:01:48.720]to become professionals,
- [00:01:50.070]where they're exploring ideas
- [00:01:51.420]that maybe we as city staff
- [00:01:53.820]wouldn't necessarily think of.
- [00:01:54.930]And so I think that's really one
- [00:01:56.850]of the great outcomes of this,
- [00:01:58.410]is really expanding what we might think is possible
- [00:02:01.860]for this site and for this old historic building
- [00:02:05.040]that is Old City Hall.
