- [00:00:04.680]Community and regional planning students
- [00:00:06.570]reimagine a growing city's downtown corridor.
- [00:00:10.260]Professor Zhenghong Tang's class
- [00:00:12.330]toured the town of Bennet, Nebraska,
- [00:00:14.490]surveyed community members, conducted field assessments,
- [00:00:17.820]and shared their downtown economic development plan
- [00:00:20.136]with the public at an open house.
- [00:00:22.470]This project will help the city of Bennet
- [00:00:27.450]to build a better, viable, economic friendly,
- [00:00:32.130]workable community downtown area for the future.
- [00:00:36.690]The Bennet does not
- [00:00:38.400]have any downtown established at this time,
- [00:00:42.420]so our goal is to establish the new downtown for Bennet.
- [00:00:48.030]You know, we wanna work with the community.
- [00:00:50.190]We don't wanna work over the community.
- [00:00:52.770]We don't want to come here and tell everyone,
- [00:00:55.297]"This is what we're doing."
- [00:00:56.520]We wanna hear back from them,
- [00:00:58.080]and that's the open house,
- [00:01:01.410]sort of bottom-up approach of planning,
- [00:01:05.340]that's why we're here.
- [00:01:06.480]Well, I really enjoyed it.
- [00:01:07.849]Meeting with the students is so much fun
- [00:01:11.963]to talk to people that understand
- [00:01:16.260]what municipalities go through the infrastructure
- [00:01:18.460]and there's so many details,
- [00:01:20.647]and to have them be excited, I've just loved it.
- [00:01:25.380]We are the consulting firm
- [00:01:26.431]that is actually teaming with the students.
- [00:01:29.490]What my involvement has been, it's been good.
- [00:01:31.590]I mean, it's been very positive.
- [00:01:32.642]I'm impressed with the students,
- [00:01:34.739]and I am graduate of the program as well,
- [00:01:37.380]so I try to help the students out wherever we can
- [00:01:40.830]to help them learn a little bit more.
- [00:01:42.810]The community engagement element
- [00:01:44.400]of the whole planning process, I think,
- [00:01:46.020]is a really key part in the planning profession,
- [00:01:49.410]so having this experience alone kinda eases my way
- [00:01:53.460]into feeling a little bit more comfortable
- [00:01:55.110]with engaging with community members
- [00:01:56.580]and asking those thought-provoking questions,
- [00:01:58.440]so I'm really grateful for this experience, this class,
- [00:02:01.800]and for community members coming in
- [00:02:03.540]to actually collaborate with us on this project.
- [00:02:06.900]Yeah, after tonight, we will collect the citizen feedback,
- [00:02:11.160]particularly for the key recommendations
- [00:02:13.800]that the students proposed,
- [00:02:15.900]and then the students can really evaluate their priorities,
- [00:02:21.390]the citizen voices,
- [00:02:23.670]and then we will further finalize their documents
- [00:02:27.930]for the city adoption.
