The 2023 Pulse Crop Conference featured many topics for growers in the Panhandle and surrounding area. Rol Rushman, a grower and a Nebraska Dry Pea and Lentil Board member, discusses some of what went on at the meeting.

[00:00:00.000]The Pulse Crop arena has changed quite a
[00:00:02.510]bit since the last time growers in the
[00:00:04.239]Panhandle and surrounding areas met in 2018.
[00:00:07.597]Rol Rushman, a grower and a member of
[00:00:10.277]the Nebraska Dry Pea and Lentil Board,
[00:00:12.396]says there’s a lot to learn.
[00:00:14.086]Here it is, 2023, and in the five years,
[00:00:16.599]some things have changed. We’ve
[00:00:18.334]picked up a lot of new varieties, a lot
[00:00:21.339]of new information on seeding rates,
[00:00:23.108]the University is helping us with, and uh,
[00:00:26.625]there’s also some new things about
[00:00:28.758]crop insurance.
[00:00:30.027]And over all, it’s changed a lot in the
[00:00:34.357]last five years. And so we’re here to
[00:00:36.115]learn about those changes.
[00:00:37.867]Winter pea production, you plant in the
[00:00:39.940]fall. Instead of traditionally what we
[00:00:42.219]have been planting in Nebraska is the
[00:00:46.224]spring pea, planted in March or April. So
[00:00:49.884]there’s some advantages to this new winter
[00:00:53.672]pea, and they would be harvested a little
[00:00:57.202]earlier they would also be, uh, maybe
[00:01:01.791]we would not be harvesting peas right when
[00:01:05.611]we’re trying to harvest wheat. So and
[00:01:07.611]consequently, I think the earlier you harvest
[00:01:11.037]they can avoid some of that heat,
[00:01:12.618]and they yield a little better. So, um, pretty
[00:01:15.237]excited about the winter peas.
[00:01:16.820]The Pulse Crop Conference held in
[00:01:18.696]Bridgeport on November 20 also covered
[00:01:20.969]crop insurance, revenue coverage,
[00:01:22.881]and items in the farm bill.
