- [00:01:08.881]walk down short-term memory lane presentation this year
- [00:01:12.990]so you can all keep enjoying lunch
- [00:01:15.150]and continue to socialize with these great folks,
- [00:01:17.850]the colleagues that are around us.
- [00:01:20.040]But we'll start with recognizing our five-year award
- [00:01:22.620]recipients who date back to 2018,

- [00:03:00.810]On the UNL campus, a record crowd
- [00:03:03.000]attended the annual spring game

- [00:03:52.740]Doug Bereuter stepped down after 25 years of service.
- [00:03:56.670]It was the last year of the Frank Solich era
- [00:03:59.370]of Husker football.
- [00:04:00.690]But the first year for the UNL Road Show
- [00:04:03.360]and the Student Advisory Board,

- [00:04:08.070]Please stand.
- [00:04:09.163](audience clapping)
- [00:04:17.170]In 1998 it was the year Nebraska won
- [00:04:20.280]the Collegiate Computer Programming Regional
- [00:04:22.890]to qualify for the world finals.
- [00:04:25.530]A $125 million Othmer gift would begin

- [00:04:34.230]Work continued on the new sky boxes
- [00:04:36.570]on the west side of Memorial Stadium
- [00:04:38.670]and the Husker football team capped the 1997 record
- [00:04:41.792]with another national championship for Tom Osborne
- [00:04:45.120]in his last game as Nebraska's head coach.
- [00:04:48.060]And it was the year that our 25 year award recipients
- [00:04:50.910]began their work with us.
- [00:04:52.110]Please stand and be recognized.
- [00:04:53.723]Congratulations.
- [00:04:55.043](audience clapping and cheering)
- [00:05:03.780]In 1993, we had a new president named Clinton
- [00:05:08.400]and in Lincoln we began the search for a new president
- [00:05:11.130]as well for the University of Nebraska
- [00:05:13.110]as Martin Massengale announced he was stepping down.
- [00:05:15.960]Morrill Hall reopened after a much needed upgrade.
- [00:05:19.590]Construction continued on the new Beadle Center.
- [00:05:22.620]Chancellor Graham Spanier announced plans
- [00:05:24.690]for expansion of the Nebraska Union
- [00:05:26.580]and also really promoted free email accounts for students,
- [00:05:30.330]faculty, and staff arguing it would radically change the way
- [00:05:34.170]the university does business.
- [00:05:36.511]That was the year our 30 year recipients joined us.
- [00:05:39.390]Please stand and and let us thank you
- [00:05:41.460]for your service to the university.
- [00:05:43.472](audience clapping)
- [00:05:53.483]Next up our 35 year award recipients.
- [00:05:56.910]1988 minimum wage was a whopping $3.36 an hour.
- [00:06:03.120]You could buy a stamp for just a quarter
- [00:06:05.280]or a new B-2 stealth bomber for just 500 million.
- [00:06:09.030]George HW Bush was elected president.
- [00:06:11.730]The space shuttle program was on again
- [00:06:14.130]after a 32 month shutdown
- [00:06:16.080]following the 1986 Challenger explosion.
- [00:06:19.620]And in Nebraska, arguments got heated as spent fuel rods
- [00:06:23.100]that year over their proposed five year
- [00:06:25.530]radioactive waste compact.
- [00:06:28.290]Let's have our 35 year recipients stand
- [00:06:30.450]and thank them for their outstanding service.
- [00:06:32.632](audience clapping and cheering)
- [00:06:33.510]Congratulations.
- [00:06:40.800]Next up 40 years.
- [00:06:43.470]Nebraska's new governor Bob Kerrey was being hailed
- [00:06:46.260]as a rising star in 1983,
- [00:06:49.350]at Andy's which was the happenin' place for UNL students.
- [00:06:53.460]You could get a sloppy joe, fries, and a drink for a buck.
- [00:06:57.990]The men's gymnastics team won
- [00:06:59.550]a fifth straight NCAA National Championship.
- [00:07:03.030]In computer science students
- [00:07:04.710]disgruntled over crowded computer labs
- [00:07:07.830]held a sit-in at Chancellor Massengale's office.
- [00:07:11.010]Let's have our 40 year recipients please stand.
- [00:07:14.323](audience clapping and cheering)
- [00:07:24.570]Next, a special group of folks
- [00:07:25.950]who are celebrating 45 years of service to this institution.
- [00:07:30.493]Dating back to 1978 when the ag economy was struggling,
- [00:07:35.130]farmers across the country went on strike,
- [00:07:37.860]at UNL a computer science student
- [00:07:40.020]funded by a $13,000 grant
- [00:07:42.300]from the National Science Foundation,
- [00:07:44.340]built a micro computer that was the size of a desk drawer.
- [00:07:49.020]UNL enrollment topped 21,000 for the first time,
- [00:07:51.957]and the university administration considered using
- [00:07:54.450]photo ID cards.
- [00:07:56.400]Tuition increased to $22.50 a credit hour,
- [00:08:00.750]which almost equaled the cost
- [00:08:02.550]of a student season football ticket,
- [00:08:04.140]which was a steal for only 25.
- [00:08:07.140]There are eight recipients
- [00:08:08.790]in the 45 year category this year,
- [00:08:11.370]five of them could not join us,
- [00:08:12.840]but let's congratulate them in absentia.
- [00:08:15.660]Michael Arthur from athletics.
- [00:08:17.520]Martha Bonner from sponsored programs.
- [00:08:20.310]Rex Nielsen from
- [00:08:21.480]the Panhandle Research and Extension Center,
- [00:08:24.060]Lynn Niemann from Food Science and Technology
- [00:08:26.880]and John Rajewski from Agronomy and Horticulture.
- [00:08:29.610]Congratulations to them.
- [00:08:31.291](audience clapping)
- [00:08:37.830]But we are honored
- [00:08:39.030]that three of those 45 year recipients
- [00:08:41.340]are here with us today.
- [00:08:42.420]And we want to ask Chancellor Bennett to join us up here now
- [00:08:45.150]to present the 45 year recipients with their service awards
- [00:08:49.320]and our congratulations and to have a photo taken as well.
- [00:08:52.680]We begin with Marlene Beyke of ASUN
- [00:08:55.740]known to hundreds of students
- [00:08:57.210]who have crossed her doorway
- [00:08:59.070]as the Director of Administration and Student Government.
- [00:09:02.130]She works with students to plan, develop,
- [00:09:04.350]and implement ASUN Student Legal Services
- [00:09:07.560]and graduate student projects and programs.
- [00:09:09.990]Congratulations.
- [00:09:18.420]Congratulations Marlene.
- [00:09:19.941](audience clapping)
- [00:09:27.081]Next is Vicki Capazo from athletics,
- [00:09:29.370]the Communications Administrative Support Associate.
- [00:09:31.770]She's in charge of the day-to-day operations of the office
- [00:09:34.800]and the supervision of their student staff.
- [00:09:37.260]She wears a lot of hats as many of us do.
- [00:09:39.360]She's also responsible for media credentials requests
- [00:09:42.630]and serves as the media host
- [00:09:44.100]for Nebraska football and men's basketball events.
- [00:09:47.160]Vicki.
- [00:09:48.784](audience clapping)
- [00:10:07.472](audience clapping)
- [00:10:14.550]Vicki's put up with a lot of annoying phone calls
- [00:10:16.800]from me over the years asking
- [00:10:18.180]for one more media credential for a football game
- [00:10:20.670]for our radio students.
- [00:10:22.590]Next is Rose Johnson from the Glenn Korff School of Music,
- [00:10:25.770]known as the glue that holds the band department together.
- [00:10:29.460]For 45 years, Rose is the first person band alumni
- [00:10:32.880]stop to see when they return to campus.
- [00:10:35.070]She's well respected by our campus community
- [00:10:37.410]and deserves our congratulations.
- [00:10:39.243](audience clapping and cheering)
- [00:10:54.443](audience clapping)
- [00:11:00.690]1973 was a year of budget cuts on campus
- [00:11:04.290]due to an oil crunch.
- [00:11:05.490]Enrollment was strong at 20,553 students
- [00:11:09.060]even though they had to pay an increase in tuition
- [00:11:11.580]that brought it up to $18 an hour.
- [00:11:14.370]The Apollo 9 space capsule landed in front
- [00:11:17.130]of Morrill Hall for a multi-year stay.
- [00:11:19.080]Remember that?
- [00:11:19.913]I sure do.
- [00:11:20.850]A ceasefire was declared in Vietnam.
- [00:11:22.950]Chancellor James Zumberge canceled classes in observance.
- [00:11:26.370]Roe v. Wade became the law of the land that year
- [00:11:29.130]and fallout from the Watergate scandal would lead
- [00:11:31.380]to the resignations of four of Richard Nixon's top aides
- [00:11:34.980]and to a Pulitzer Prize in journalism
- [00:11:36.720]for the Washington Post.
- [00:11:38.640]We have one 50 year recipient this year
- [00:11:40.890]who started with us in 1973,
- [00:11:42.567]and I believe this was the only place
- [00:11:44.490]he worked in his entire career.
- [00:11:46.500]That would be Danny Ladely.
- [00:11:48.120]Danny was not able to join us today,
- [00:11:49.860]but I think almost all of us know Danny
- [00:11:52.260]for the work he has done
- [00:11:53.580]as the Director of the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
- [00:11:56.700]Through Danny's leadership the Ross garnered a national
- [00:11:59.340]and perhaps even an international reputation
- [00:12:01.260]as being one of the best screening venues
- [00:12:02.924]for independent films.
- [00:12:05.070]We congratulate Danny in his absentia today
- [00:12:07.500]on his retirement and 50 years with us.
- [00:12:09.510]Danny, well done.
- [00:12:10.985](everyone clapping)
- [00:12:18.330]1968 was a difficult year at a national scale.
- [00:12:22.620]Lyndon Johnson announced he would neither seek nor accept
- [00:12:25.410]the nomination for another term in office.
- [00:12:27.810]Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis
- [00:12:31.200]and Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed
- [00:12:33.120]following a campaign event in California,
- [00:12:35.700]the Democratic National Convention in Chicago turned violent
- [00:12:39.180]in front of a national television office or audience.
- [00:12:42.300]The Navy ship USS Pueblo was seized in the Sea of Japan
- [00:12:46.020]by North Korean patrol boats
- [00:12:48.450]and Vietnam Reds launched the Tet Offensive.
- [00:12:51.720]But things were looking up on campus
- [00:12:53.910]literally as Oldfather Hall and Hamilton
- [00:12:56.160]became the university's first high rise buildings
- [00:12:59.550]and a 20 year plan was proposed for the campus that year
- [00:13:03.570]for the university also created a pedestrian campus
- [00:13:06.570]with shuttle bus service.
- [00:13:08.400]And so at this point we would like to recognize
- [00:13:10.710]a truly remarkable achievement that started in 1968
- [00:13:14.730]and that was the service of Dr. Brett Ratcliffe,
- [00:13:17.820]who retired September 30th
- [00:13:19.440]after serving 55 years
- [00:13:22.350]as Professor at Entomology and
- [00:13:24.360]former Curator of the University of Nebraska State Museum.
- [00:13:27.780]Congratulations.
- [00:13:29.167](audience cheering and clapping)
- [00:13:44.670]Outstanding.
- [00:13:53.970]So let's congratulate all of our valued employees
- [00:13:56.190]one more time this afternoon.
- [00:13:58.235](audience clapping)
- [00:13:59.340]Our thanks to you all.
- [00:14:03.150]I thank you for your time.
- [00:14:04.530]And turn the podium over to our Chancellor, Dr. Bennett.
- [00:14:07.516]Thank you.
- [00:14:10.868]Good afternoon.
- [00:14:12.900]Thank you Rick.
- [00:14:14.100]I wanted to take a point of chancellor privilege
- [00:14:17.700]and ask our 55 year recipient if he might come to the podium
- [00:14:22.260]and just say a word to us
- [00:14:23.670]about what it has meant to serve the state of Nebraska
- [00:14:27.750]and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:14:30.090]over the last 55 years.
- [00:14:31.740]Please make him to feel welcome.
- [00:14:33.607](audience clapping)
- [00:14:40.620]Well, actually I had hoped to die in the saddle,
- [00:14:43.620]but instead I wanted to continue my research unabated
- [00:14:46.200]so I had to give up teaching to allow time for that.
- [00:14:49.320]And that was a difficult decision
- [00:14:50.670]because students are the first thing
- [00:14:51.900]we think of when we go to a university.
- [00:14:55.200]Conversely, I was able to change a hobby into a profession.
- [00:14:58.740]So I really never worked at UNL.
- [00:15:00.720]I had a passion and that passion continues after.
- [00:15:06.360]Thanks to all of you.
- [00:15:08.399](audience clapping)
- [00:15:15.900]Rick, if I could get you to come back to the podium
- [00:15:18.000]just for a second.
- [00:15:21.660]Yes, sir.
- [00:15:24.240]I guess two decades,
- [00:15:27.150]Rick has presided over this very important program.
- [00:15:31.290]So we wanted to present you Rick today with a small token
- [00:15:34.470]of our appreciation for what you have done
- [00:15:37.470]and what you bring to this beautiful ceremony.
- [00:15:40.140]It's my first ceremony,
- [00:15:41.250]but I can already tell
- [00:15:42.300]that it would not be the same without you.
- [00:15:44.940]So thank you, sir, for what you do.
- [00:15:47.359](audience clapping and cheering)
- [00:15:48.192]Thank you Chancellor, much appreciated.
- [00:15:58.710]And then last but not least,
- [00:16:00.120]I really want the university community to get
