- [00:00:00.780]Welcome back to Iowa City, Iowa,
- [00:00:04.020]home this afternoon of Nebraska, Iowa volleyball,
- [00:00:07.560]and we're getting you ready for the matchup
- [00:00:09.480]by chatting with the UNL Chancellor,
- [00:00:11.520]Chancellor Rodney Bennett.
- [00:00:13.140]Greetings, how's your Sunday?
- [00:00:14.370]Oh my gosh, John, it's been a great Sunday.
- [00:00:16.950]Thank you for being with me.
- [00:00:18.630]Thank you for giving me an opportunity
- [00:00:20.760]to speak to Husker Nation
- [00:00:23.215]on this important volleyball game day.
- [00:00:26.370]Can't wait to get started, can't wait to do what we do.
- [00:00:31.158]UNL Chancellor opens doors
- [00:00:33.480]to new opportunities in so many ways.
- [00:00:35.310]And when you think and talk about the economic impact
- [00:00:38.040]on this state made by the university,
- [00:00:40.110]how do you describe this economic engine that is UNL?
- [00:00:42.750]Well, I'm always happy to talk about the economic impact
- [00:00:46.170]that the university has,
- [00:00:48.060]not only in Lincoln, but across the state,
- [00:00:50.670]and I would even say across the region.
- [00:00:53.730]We are extremely proud that we create opportunity
- [00:00:57.360]for Nebraska through education,
- [00:00:59.880]world leading research and engagement
- [00:01:02.250]with Nebraskans in all 93 counties of our state.
- [00:01:07.110]In the most recent economic impact study,
- [00:01:11.010]the University of Nebraska Lincoln, believe it or not,
- [00:01:13.590]has a $2.9 billion annual economic impact
- [00:01:19.977]in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:22.080]I just wanna say that again and make sure everybody heard
- [00:01:24.270]that that was $2.9 billion with a B, not M,
- [00:01:29.797]$2.9 billion economic impact.
- [00:01:33.630]And, for every state appropriated dollar invested
- [00:01:38.610]in the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:01:41.347]$11 is returned directly to the economy of the state.
- [00:01:47.880]One of our most well-known alumni,
- [00:01:52.050]Mr. Warren Buffett, likes to say,
- [00:01:55.057]"The best investment is to invest in yourself."
- [00:02:00.120]As Nebraska's land grant university,
- [00:02:03.510]we are certainly proud that our university
- [00:02:07.200]is a tremendous asset and investment
- [00:02:10.560]for the future of our state.
- [00:02:12.540]Well, I hope UNL brings back those great billboards
- [00:02:14.820]along I-80 of Warren Buffet in a shirt,
- [00:02:17.940]and it just says, "Invest in yourself."
- [00:02:20.040]Meanwhile, we, of course, think of the university
- [00:02:23.370]as this big engine in Lincoln itself, but how specifically
- [00:02:27.570]does it affect our economy across the state?
- [00:02:30.030]Well, part of that has to do with entrepreneurship,
- [00:02:33.510]and we're very proud of our efforts
- [00:02:35.730]in the realm or in the space of entrepreneurship.
- [00:02:39.240]I'd like to talk about maybe two
- [00:02:40.650]or three things that come to mind.
- [00:02:42.330]One has to do with our Innovation Campus,
- [00:02:46.140]which occupies the site
- [00:02:48.360]that used to be the old state fairground.
- [00:02:50.520]I'm sure most of our listeners and alumni spent many times
- [00:02:54.270]out at the state fair.
- [00:02:56.340]But the Innovation Campus
- [00:02:58.170]has a $371 million annual economic impact,
- [00:03:04.350]and our world-leading research faculties' work
- [00:03:09.000]in new tech ventures contributes about $5.7 million
- [00:03:14.340]in licensing for this past year.
- [00:03:18.360]But the most dynamic entrepreneurial environment on campus,
- [00:03:22.560]I believe, comes from the Raikes School
- [00:03:25.350]of Computer Science and Management,
- [00:03:27.960]particularly through the Design Studio,
- [00:03:31.830]which really helps to incubate student-led startups.
- [00:03:35.940]And one of the most famous, well-known startups
- [00:03:39.960]from the Design Studio and the Raikes School,
- [00:03:42.690]obviously, is Hudl.
- [00:03:44.700]We all know Hudl and are proud of their success.
- [00:03:48.180]But today I'd like to just highlight
- [00:03:50.040]three startups this year.
- [00:03:52.740]The first is Dyslexico,
- [00:03:55.051]which is a grammar correction tool for dyslexics.
- [00:03:59.610]The second is Cattle Kettle,
- [00:04:02.580]which is a cattle water tank monitoring system.
- [00:04:06.780]And then finally, INFR, which is a workflow solution
- [00:04:12.210]for intelligent image management.
- [00:04:15.720]I would say to your listeners,
- [00:04:17.550]pay close attention to these three startups.
- [00:04:20.820]They have tremendous potential and opportunity
- [00:04:24.320]led by dynamic students supported by the university
- [00:04:28.530]through the Raikes School in the Design Studios,
- [00:04:31.530]so we are expecting really great things to happen
- [00:04:35.040]to these three startups, just as it did for Hudl.
- [00:04:38.460]Chancellor, I've met so many
- [00:04:39.690]of those impressive Raikes alums,
- [00:04:41.970]and I've spoken to a couple
- [00:04:42.930]who've turned down Wharton at Pennsylvania to go there.
- [00:04:45.960]I spoke to one who turned down
- [00:04:47.550]Washington University of St. Louis.
- [00:04:48.720]It's a world class computer science incubator
- [00:04:51.960]and program for undergraduates across the country.
- [00:04:54.240]Now, what about rural Nebraska?
- [00:04:56.520]What is UNL doing every day to help rural Nebraska?
- [00:04:58.710]Yeah, our bread and butter in so many ways
- [00:05:01.620]comes from rural Nebraska.
- [00:05:03.911]Our work in IANR, our agriculture and natural resources,
- [00:05:08.806]our extension operations, and it really means a lot to us
- [00:05:14.250]to never lose sight of what it means
- [00:05:17.100]to be the state's land grant institution.
- [00:05:20.487]So when I think about all of that,
- [00:05:23.580]I think about the Nebraska extension workshops
- [00:05:28.170]on beef education across the state.
- [00:05:31.836]We have had more than 8,000 participants
- [00:05:36.480]as part of that program,
- [00:05:38.580]and it brings a little more than $6.2 million
- [00:05:42.480]to the table annually with regard to its economic impact.
- [00:05:46.800]So what we're doing with beef
- [00:05:49.050]and beef education across the state,
- [00:05:51.540]what we're doing in agriculture and natural resources,
- [00:05:54.938]remembering and embracing our land grant designation
- [00:05:59.010]all goes a long way in helping us meet Nebraskans
- [00:06:02.880]where they are and really provide a way forward for them.
- [00:06:07.620]Finally, I'd like to highlight,
- [00:06:09.450]in terms of helping rural communities,
- [00:06:12.210]communities like Lynch, Nebraska,
- [00:06:15.270]to form cooperatives to replace grocery stores,
- [00:06:19.200]and also places like Tilden and Plainview and others
- [00:06:24.360]who are really being able to advance entrepreneurship
- [00:06:28.560]and business development in many of those rural communities.
- [00:06:32.400]Chancellor Bennett, as we head into Thanksgiving week,
- [00:06:34.890]any thoughts you wanna share with UNL students, faculty,
- [00:06:37.860]staff, and all the fans across the state?
- [00:06:40.230]Well, I think as we head into Thanksgiving,
- [00:06:42.210]obviously we want to enjoy and be thankful
- [00:06:45.390]for all the great blessings that we have received.
- [00:06:48.960]We want have a great meal on Thanksgiving Day.
- [00:06:51.630]We want to just take a little bit of time
- [00:06:54.210]to appreciate that nap that should follow a good,
- [00:06:58.590]well-respected Thanksgiving lunch.
- [00:07:00.870]I think the nap is sometimes underrated,
- [00:07:03.630]but I'm gonna encourage all of our listeners
- [00:07:06.180]to take a little bit of time and just enjoy that nap.
- [00:07:09.510]I do it on the couch as opposed to making it official.
- [00:07:12.810]I think those couch naps are just much more impactful.
- [00:07:17.641]So anyway, there's that.
- [00:07:20.100]But then I'm also very proud of UNL students, faculty,
- [00:07:23.970]and staff for the difference that we are making
- [00:07:27.720]in the state of Nebraska and on behalf of all Nebraskans.
- [00:07:32.130]And I would remind our listeners
- [00:07:33.960]that more than 80,000 alumni of this fine university
- [00:07:38.700]work in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:07:41.610]And I'd also brag about the fact
- [00:07:43.830]that among employers that hire the most Husker graduates,
- [00:07:48.872]all the top 10 and 15 of the top 20 employers
- [00:07:55.200]are Nebraska-based organizations, that's pretty cool.
- [00:08:00.180]We draw new students in to this fine university,
- [00:08:03.780]and in turn, Nebraska employers can count on our graduates
- [00:08:09.373]for their talent needs, that's just pretty special
- [00:08:12.900]and something that I'm grateful for and thankful for,
- [00:08:15.960]and proud to be chancellor of a place
- [00:08:18.690]that produces graduates like we do.
- [00:08:21.270]Chancellor Rodney Bennett,
- [00:08:22.470]the Big Red and the Hawkeyes coming up, first serve soon.
- [00:08:25.590]You're listening to Big Red Volleyball.
- [00:08:26.993](upbeat music)
