[00:00:19.740]We're kind of winding this semester down.
[00:00:21.467]How was the week for you actually?
[00:00:22.770]Greg, I cannot tell you how sad I am
[00:00:24.960]to think I only have two more times to be on air with you.
[00:00:28.590]I mean, where has the time gone?
[00:00:30.810]Fast, fast. It's gone fast, yeah.
[00:00:31.933]Fast, fast time. Last week was such a fun home game
[00:00:34.653]with the Veteran's Day celebrations.
[00:00:36.600]We celebrated Veterans Day earlier this month
[00:00:39.180]and the university was recently ranked highly
[00:00:41.880]for its services for students who are veterans.
[00:00:44.970]What can you tell us about that ranking?
[00:00:46.500]Yeah, we're really proud of our work in this space, Greg.
[00:00:49.380]I mean, I think that military service is the highest form
[00:00:52.830]of patriotism in our country,
[00:00:55.020]and so we're glad that we are recognizing veteran students
[00:00:57.960]and their families and providing the necessary
[00:01:00.600]services for them.
[00:01:02.478]I just, every time I think about it, it just makes me smile
[00:01:06.090]to know that that is available.
[00:01:07.920]I'll share with our listeners that UNL
[00:01:10.110]is among the top 25 colleges and universities
[00:01:13.980]in the best for vets rankings by Military Times.
[00:01:18.780]Nebraska ranked first among Big 10 universities
[00:01:23.550]and 22nd on the list of 325 colleges and universities.
[00:01:28.830]Certainly as chancellor, I'm proud of that,
[00:01:31.770]but that ranking is really not an accident.
[00:01:36.090]It's a testament to the work,
[00:01:38.610]our Military and Veteran Success Center,
[00:01:42.090]and the recognition of the university's overall support
[00:01:45.540]for military connected students.
[00:01:48.300]And as you know, Huskers have a long history
[00:01:51.844]of appreciation for those who serve our country.
[00:01:56.250]In fact, for each of my pre-game tailgates for football,
[00:02:01.140]I share the story of the construction and dedication
[00:02:03.990]of Memorial Stadium.
[00:02:06.088]The stadium continues to be a unifying force
[00:02:09.360]for all Nebraskans, and most importantly,
[00:02:12.420]demonstrates both the grit and the determination
[00:02:16.260]of our community, while it continues to honor
[00:02:19.980]the brave Nebraska service men and women.
[00:02:23.790]To this day, the respect and admiration Huskers have
[00:02:28.770]for those who serve and their family members is deep
[00:02:32.790]and it's very real and we're proud of that.
[00:02:35.160]Let's talk some numbers here.
[00:02:36.270]How many Husker students may be veterans
[00:02:38.877]or they're connected to a military family?
[00:02:42.690]Yeah, you know, what we know from individuals
[00:02:45.930]who have sort of self-identified,
[00:02:48.090]'cause I suspect we have some who are
[00:02:50.000]in these categories that we just don't know about,
[00:02:53.490]but for what we know, we've got about 1,600
[00:02:56.760]military connected students, which is a number
[00:02:59.910]that has increased 3 to 5% each year
[00:03:04.050]for the past four years.
[00:03:06.690]Of that 1,600 students, about 1,100
[00:03:10.470]are military dependents, which means
[00:03:12.870]that they are either children or spouses.
[00:03:16.770]325 are veterans and 215 are active duty,
[00:03:22.350]National Guard or reserve students.
[00:03:25.440]I know Nebraskans know about
[00:03:26.940]the Military and Veteran Success Center.
[00:03:28.830]What are some of the ways that that
[00:03:30.810]supports student veterans?
[00:03:33.060]Well, the center is the place on campus
[00:03:35.130]where our student veterans can get all the support
[00:03:38.280]that they need.
[00:03:39.840]The center provides information, it provides resources
[00:03:43.470]to military connected students
[00:03:45.690]to help maximize their financial benefits for education,
[00:03:50.040]including the GI bills, scholarships, residency,
[00:03:54.000]and grants.
[00:03:55.920]The center offers a holistic support to students
[00:03:59.520]helping them to navigate resources both on and off campus,
[00:04:04.170]including office hours with counseling
[00:04:06.630]and psychological services
[00:04:08.940]and representatives from the US Veterans Administration.
[00:04:14.460]The center offers an academic mentorship program
[00:04:18.450]connecting students to additional educational resources
[00:04:22.800]on campus and really, Greg, anything else
[00:04:25.320]that we could be of assistance with.
[00:04:27.060]What kind of final message would you like to give
[00:04:28.950]to UNL military students, veterans,
[00:04:30.900]and even their families?
[00:04:32.070]Well, I think I'd like to first start with a thank you,
[00:04:36.840]a most sincere thank you for your service,
[00:04:39.690]and if you are a family member, to thank you
[00:04:42.330]for your support of our service men and women.
[00:04:46.140]UNL is a university that recognizes your sacrifice
[00:04:50.340]and we want to help you to be successful
[00:04:53.280]both as students and as a graduate.
[00:04:56.640]And it's not just UNL.
[00:04:58.470]As chancellor of this university,
[00:05:01.080]I recognize that sacrifice and I'm very proud
[00:05:04.680]of the fact that, for the last 30 years of my career,
[00:05:08.340]I've done everything that I could do to sort of elevate
[00:05:10.710]and support both our military students,
[00:05:14.310]their beneficiaries, and their family members,
[00:05:17.580]who may find their way to the university.
[00:05:19.590]Fantastic. I should have started by apologizing to you,
[00:05:22.470]'cause when I saw you after the game last week,
[00:05:24.300]I wasn't in a very good mood.
[00:05:25.650]I was in a bit of a fog,
[00:05:27.041]so I probably wasn't my normal cheery self
[00:05:30.060]to you and your wife. Well, you are very cheerful
[00:05:33.540]and I don't think one time of not being cheerful after
[00:05:36.270]a very disappointing, devastating loss for all of us,
[00:05:40.260]I think you get a pass.
