- [00:00:00.870]We're back here on "Countdown to Kickoff".
- [00:00:02.280]Huskers today at 11:06 kickoff
- [00:00:04.440]against the Maryland Terrapins,
- [00:00:05.640]but before we get to kickoff,
- [00:00:06.900]we like to sit down every week and talk
- [00:00:08.610]with the chancellor of the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:10.410]Dr. Rodney Bennett.
- [00:00:11.760]You've been busy this week.
- [00:00:12.840]I mean, you're making speaking,
- [00:00:14.550]but that's part of being a chancellor, right?
- [00:00:15.990]Getting out and not just staying in your office
- [00:00:18.141]all the time. That's right. That's right,
- [00:00:19.050]and really, that's one of the most exciting parts
- [00:00:21.540]of this position is the opportunity
- [00:00:23.640]to get out around town
- [00:00:25.050]and visit with alumni and friends of the university
- [00:00:27.630]and the business community,
- [00:00:30.150]but also to get across the state
- [00:00:31.830]and my wife Temple and I
- [00:00:33.660]had a wonderful opportunity to do that
- [00:00:35.730]last Sunday afternoon.
- [00:00:38.460]I know many of your listeners know Mark McHargue,
- [00:00:40.830]who is the president of Nebraska Farm Bureau
- [00:00:44.730]and he and his wife Judy
- [00:00:47.700]invited us out to their place in Central City, Nebraska
- [00:00:51.990]and we got to see their farm and their farm operation.
- [00:00:55.110]He showed us around Central City
- [00:00:56.820]and it was a wonderful Sunday afternoon,
- [00:01:01.050]and then Judy took us back to the house
- [00:01:03.330]or they took us back to the house
- [00:01:04.680]and we had a great delicacy.
- [00:01:07.050]We had chili and cinnamon rolls,
- [00:01:09.150]which was something I had never had before,
- [00:01:11.940]but it was awesome.
- [00:01:12.870]So, I'm now a fan of chili and cinnamon rolls,
- [00:01:16.410]but one of the things, Greg,
- [00:01:17.490]that made me think about was the harvest season
- [00:01:19.860]and how many Nebraskans are sorta getting that wrapped up
- [00:01:23.370]in advance of any severe cold or snowy weather
- [00:01:27.840]and just the appreciation for what it means
- [00:01:30.900]to be in Nebraska
- [00:01:32.310]and the leadership that Nebraska is providing
- [00:01:34.800]across the country as it relates to agriculture
- [00:01:37.980]and natural resources.
- [00:01:39.810]Also, earlier this week,
- [00:01:41.700]I was the featured speaker
- [00:01:43.290]for the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce
- [00:01:45.960]and I'm told that the facility at the club was sold out.
- [00:01:50.700]I think in access of maybe upwards of 200 people were there
- [00:01:55.950]and we had a really robust program,
- [00:01:57.630]but one of the things I was excited about
- [00:01:59.340]was the inclusion of Mike Boehm in our program.
- [00:02:03.510]We all know Mike as the Vice President
- [00:02:05.700]for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources
- [00:02:09.270]here on campus
- [00:02:10.530]and in front of that audience,
- [00:02:11.910]he was able to walk those individuals
- [00:02:14.490]through our ongoing commitment
- [00:02:17.340]and devotion to making sure that
- [00:02:19.080]we remain the leader across the country
- [00:02:21.930]in ag and natural resources.
- [00:02:23.970]So, I'm very proud of our work in that area.
- [00:02:26.310]I'm very proud of our R-1 research designation.
- [00:02:29.940]I'm very proud to be able to talk about
- [00:02:31.650]the good things that are going on in agriculture
- [00:02:33.840]and natural resources in our state.
- [00:02:35.850]I am not surprised at all they sold out your event.
- [00:02:37.953](Rodney laughs) You could've had
- [00:02:38.786]a much bigger room than 200 there, Chancellor.
- [00:02:41.250]I do wanna ask- Well, I thought you would be
- [00:02:42.360]more impressed by the fact that I had chili
- [00:02:44.460]and cinnamon rolls for the first time.
- [00:02:45.900]You're now a real Nebraskan.
- [00:02:46.862]Ah, well. Well, I thought it that way.
- [00:02:49.530]You also had Research Days on campus this past week.
- [00:02:53.190]What does that entail?
- [00:02:54.330]Well, Research Days is a really unique opportunity
- [00:02:57.810]for the campus to really highlight
- [00:02:59.700]the importance of research
- [00:03:01.800]and the ways that research really changes our lives
- [00:03:06.030]and elevates our lives.
- [00:03:08.460]It includes a celebration of not only the research
- [00:03:11.490]and scholarly activity
- [00:03:13.650]that takes place at our land grant institution,
- [00:03:17.310]but it also celebrates inventors
- [00:03:20.820]and you may not know this,
- [00:03:22.680]but we are ranked in the top 100 institutions
- [00:03:27.300]for earning U.S. patents
- [00:03:29.310]and that is the sixth year in a row
- [00:03:32.580]that we have been in the top 100.
- [00:03:35.340]So, when you think about innovation, creativity,
- [00:03:39.690]discoveries being sort of
- [00:03:43.350]the ingenuity that comes along with it,
- [00:03:46.230]the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:47.820]is among the top universities in the country
- [00:03:51.480]who are sort of pushing the envelope in some things
- [00:03:54.120]that I think really help us all to live better lives.
- [00:03:57.000]Chancellor, last week,
- [00:03:57.833]you mentioned the university's global leadership
- [00:04:00.090]in ag research and particularly,
- [00:04:01.860]with food and water security.
- [00:04:03.600]What are some other major strengths at UNL
- [00:04:06.360]for some research?
- [00:04:08.550]It's really from soup to nuts
- [00:04:10.770]as it were in terms of what we're involved with.
- [00:04:13.140]I mean, a lot of times,
- [00:04:14.010]people think about engineering and obviously,
- [00:04:17.070]that's a marquee program for us
- [00:04:19.290]and architecture is a marquee program for us
- [00:04:22.800]and obviously,
- [00:04:23.633]our important work in agriculture
- [00:04:26.100]and natural resources,
- [00:04:28.050]but we also are leading the way
- [00:04:30.060]when it comes to food and life sciences.
- [00:04:33.840]We are among the leaders in early childhood education.
- [00:04:38.910]I really believe in how important that is,
- [00:04:42.720]because I once heard it said
- [00:04:45.030]that from kindergarten to third grade,
- [00:04:48.120]students are learning to read,
- [00:04:50.730]and then from third grade for the rest of their lives,
- [00:04:53.790]they're reading to learn,
- [00:04:55.620]and so early childhood education,
- [00:04:58.050]early childhood development is key,
- [00:05:00.600]certainly for those formative years of K-3,
- [00:05:04.650]but then really, for the rest of your life.
- [00:05:06.480]So, the fact that we are the leader
- [00:05:07.950]in early childhood education is important.
- [00:05:11.250]Digital humanities is another area
- [00:05:13.710]for which we're providing leadership.
- [00:05:15.900]High energy physics is right up there
- [00:05:18.180]at the top of the list.
- [00:05:19.890]Material science is there.
- [00:05:22.680]There's really not anything that we're doing here
- [00:05:26.250]that's not competitive with what the best universities,
- [00:05:29.760]not only in the Big 10 are doing,
- [00:05:31.980]but really, the best universities across the country
- [00:05:34.110]are engaged with.
- [00:05:35.130]We've heard you and also President Carter
- [00:05:37.200]talking about one of the goals moving forward
- [00:05:39.510]for the university is to be readmitted to the AAU.
- [00:05:41.790]That's correct. How big of a factor
- [00:05:42.810]is research and maybe getting that done?
- [00:05:44.430]Well, the research component is key to that.
- [00:05:46.800]I mean, obviously, thinking about the work
- [00:05:48.630]that's done in Omaha with the medical university
- [00:05:52.020]is important
- [00:05:53.280]and bringing together the work that's done there
- [00:05:56.040]along with the work that we do here,
- [00:05:58.260]both on East Campus and on City Campus,
- [00:06:01.200]are really important factors
- [00:06:03.270]in terms of how the member institutions
- [00:06:06.030]will view our desire to be readmitted for membership.
- [00:06:10.260]Fantastic. Enjoy the game today.
- [00:06:11.970]This is one of my favorite pre-game shows,
- [00:06:13.770]'cause it's Military Appreciation Day.
- [00:06:15.360]The marching band, which is phenomenal,
- [00:06:17.700]they play all four branches,
- [00:06:19.350]their fight songs, and I love it.
- [00:06:21.150]So, make sure you take in the pre-game show.
- [00:06:22.950]It's pretty special and I hope in addition to that,
- [00:06:25.290]that I'll happen upon a tailgate
- [00:06:27.330]that has chili
- [00:06:28.479]and cinnamon rolls. And cinnamon rolls.
- [00:06:29.520]There you go.
- [00:06:30.353]Wait, we've converted you already.
- [00:06:32.280]Good to see you, sir. Thank you, Greg.
- [00:06:33.300]Always good to be with you. We'll talk with him
- [00:06:34.710]again next week.
- [00:06:35.543]Matt Coatney's back with our "Big 10 Blitz"
- [00:06:37.050]coming up next.
