- [00:00:00.180]Everybody, Central Pennsylvania,
- [00:00:02.280]Happy Valley, the site, but we get a treat
- [00:00:04.800]tonight we get a chance to chat
- [00:00:06.300]with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Chancellor,
- [00:00:08.100]Chancellor Rodney Bennett,
- [00:00:09.780]chancellor, great to see you.
- [00:00:10.860]Hey, John, so glad to be with you tonight.
- [00:00:13.440]Thank you for having me on.
- [00:00:14.580]Look forward to our conversation.
- [00:00:16.500]Well Chancellor, Agriculture is huge in Nebraska.
- [00:00:19.320]It's the number one industry in the entire state,
- [00:00:21.390]and the university has a new partnership
- [00:00:23.250]to build on its commitment to preparing future students
- [00:00:25.920]who want to work in agriculture.
- [00:00:27.420]Now, how does this new partnership work?
- [00:00:29.160]Yeah, I'm so excited to get
- [00:00:30.390]to talk about the new partnership, but before I do that,
- [00:00:32.850]I just wanna say to you and to all of our listeners,
- [00:00:36.150]that agriculture and natural resources
- [00:00:38.400]continues to be very important,
- [00:00:40.650]not only to the state of Nebraska,
- [00:00:42.930]but to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:45.570]And we take very seriously our designation
- [00:00:48.660]as the land grant institution, and believe that we are led
- [00:00:53.100]and called to do all that we can do to continue
- [00:00:57.150]to elevate the entire state of Nebraska,
- [00:01:00.060]but particularly as it relates to agriculture
- [00:01:03.270]and natural resources,
- [00:01:04.680]which really plays nicely into this new opportunity
- [00:01:08.520]that we have that I wanna talk to you about this evening.
- [00:01:11.970]When we talk about the talent pipeline,
- [00:01:15.180]the agriculture teacher pipeline
- [00:01:17.940]feeds the agriculture industry pipeline.
- [00:01:21.900]So having enough teachers to prepare their students
- [00:01:25.440]for a path forward,
- [00:01:27.360]toward the agriculture industry is really paramount.
- [00:01:31.380]I wanna give you just a little bit of context.
- [00:01:33.900]In recent years, more than 70 Nebraska schools
- [00:01:39.060]have started an Ag education program.
- [00:01:42.750]So we are excited about our new joint agreement
- [00:01:46.320]between Chadron State College
- [00:01:49.260]and our Department of Agricultural Leadership Education
- [00:01:52.500]and Communication,
- [00:01:54.300]which is really maximizing the educational opportunities
- [00:01:57.960]for Chadron State students aiming to become ag educators.
- [00:02:04.080]I'd like to just sort of break down very briefly
- [00:02:06.960]a little bit of the nuances of the program.
- [00:02:09.630]It's a three plus one program,
- [00:02:12.840]which means that students can take three years
- [00:02:15.990]of academic coursework at Chadron,
- [00:02:19.020]transfer for one semester
- [00:02:21.690]in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources
- [00:02:25.050]here at UNL,
- [00:02:26.730]then complete their student teaching.
- [00:02:30.000]That program is very similar to what I'm sure
- [00:02:32.550]some of our listeners know about
- [00:02:34.950]with regard to a two plus two articulation agreement
- [00:02:39.330]that the university has
- [00:02:40.560]with the College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:02:43.380]and Natural Resources,
- [00:02:45.180]and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture,
- [00:02:49.050]Northeast Community College, Central Community College,
- [00:02:53.220]and Southeast Community College.
- [00:02:56.220]We have been committed to serving the entire state
- [00:03:00.630]since our charter way back (laughs) in 1869,
- [00:03:06.780]and we believe that this new agreement
- [00:03:08.880]is an extension of that 154 year old commitment.
- [00:03:15.120]I want your listeners to know
- [00:03:16.500]that even though we've had some transition
- [00:03:18.720]at the university,
- [00:03:20.370]we still take pride in telling Nebraska students
- [00:03:25.620]that wherever they're transferring from,
- [00:03:29.430]if you're attending all four years at UNL,
- [00:03:33.390]if you're going to,
- [00:03:35.640]we're gonna make sure that you get a quality education
- [00:03:38.970]and that you're the best prepared teacher possible
- [00:03:42.570]on day one in that classroom,
- [00:03:44.340]and we're very proud of that commitment.
- [00:03:46.110]Sounds like Chancellor a great boost for Chadron,
- [00:03:48.180]but also for University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:03:50.040]but most importantly for future K12 students
- [00:03:52.470]who get this kind of instruction.
- [00:03:54.450]Now partnerships are critical
- [00:03:57.360]for the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:58.560]What others might you share with us tonight?
- [00:04:00.240]Well, if time allows,
- [00:04:01.950]I would like to talk to you a little bit about
- [00:04:03.810]another announced partnership that we hope will grow,
- [00:04:07.710]and that has to do
- [00:04:08.640]with the tech talent workforce for Nebraska.
- [00:04:12.810]As you know, fast-growing businesses in search of talent
- [00:04:16.800]are at times forced to look outside of their region
- [00:04:20.220]because they either encounter skill gaps
- [00:04:24.000]that they need in employees.
- [00:04:27.090]So the university has taken steps to serve
- [00:04:29.790]fast-growing Nebraska tech businesses.
- [00:04:33.210]We recently launched a partnership with Skill Storm,
- [00:04:38.520]which is a tech talent accelerator.
- [00:04:41.520]Through this training platform,
- [00:04:43.590]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:04:45.990]will be able to offer a range of courses
- [00:04:48.570]that lead to tech skills credentials,
- [00:04:52.500]in today's most high demand areas.
- [00:04:56.490]It's really a unique approach
- [00:04:58.500]and one that will benefit both our students
- [00:05:02.100]and their career paths
- [00:05:03.900]and current workers who are seeking new skills.
- [00:05:08.130]So this partnership is one more way
- [00:05:12.030]that UNL is working to make a difference
- [00:05:14.790]and positive impact on a sector up through Nebraska economy
- [00:05:19.950]that's poised for growth.
- [00:05:21.690]That's chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:05:24.180]Rodney Bennett, University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:26.040]Great place to get a college degree.
- [00:05:27.660]Stay right there.
- [00:05:28.493]More pre-game, the Big Red and the Navy,
- [00:05:30.990]the Huskers in Penn State tonight.
