- [00:00:00.500](upbeat jazz music)
- [00:00:06.240]Mice mummies prove that life is possible
- [00:00:08.730]in Mars-like conditions.
- [00:00:10.320]Biological Sciences Professor Jay Storz
- [00:00:13.140]discovered mummified mouse cadavers
- [00:00:15.360]at the top of a 22,000-foot volcano
- [00:00:18.270]along the Chile Argentina border.
- [00:00:20.610]Conditions at that altitude, desert dryness,
- [00:00:23.580]below freezing temperatures year-round,
- [00:00:25.830]and less than half the oxygen at sea level
- [00:00:28.440]are comparable to the surface of Mars.
- [00:00:30.570]This discovery makes me think that probably,
- [00:00:34.560]we've underestimated the elevational range limits
- [00:00:38.400]and physiological tolerances of animals,
- [00:00:41.190]simply because the world's highest summits
- [00:00:44.280]are relatively unexplored by biologists.
- [00:00:48.390]Storz also captured live rodents
- [00:00:50.640]on the same volcano peak.
- [00:00:52.440]Before this discovery,
- [00:00:53.640]it was believed no mammal could survive
- [00:00:55.560]at such extreme altitudes.
- [00:00:57.319](upbeat jazz music continues)
- [00:00:58.590]A Nebraska opera wraps up a statewide tour.
- [00:01:01.867]"O Pioneers!" was composed
- [00:01:03.450]by UNL Music Professor Tyler Goodrich White.
- [00:01:06.510]The opera is based on Willa Cather's novel
- [00:01:08.940]about a Swedish family living in Nebraska
- [00:01:11.310]in the late 1800s.
- [00:01:12.877]"O Pioneers!" recently completed a statewide tour,
- [00:01:15.960]which included performances in Scottsbluff, McCook,
- [00:01:19.050]and Cather's hometown of Red Cloud.
- [00:01:21.390]The opera will be performed
- [00:01:22.770]at the Lied Center for Performing Arts,
- [00:01:24.570]Sunday, November 12th.
- [00:01:26.670]The Lied Center production will feature
- [00:01:28.230]student and alumni singers of UNL Opera,
- [00:01:31.170]the UNL Chamber Singers, and a full orchestra.
- [00:01:35.280]A Nebraska town teams up with architecture students
- [00:01:38.160]for a facelift.
- [00:01:39.450]Professor Zhenghong Tang's
- [00:01:41.130]Community and Regional Planning students
- [00:01:43.380]tour Bennett and talk to community leaders
- [00:01:45.750]about their vision for the small city.
- [00:01:47.940]Students then create downtown revitalization plans
- [00:01:51.330]and present their ideas at an open house.
- [00:01:53.730]Well, I've really enjoyed it.
- [00:01:55.500]Meeting with the students is so much fun,
- [00:01:59.340]to talk to people that understand
- [00:02:03.480]what municipalities go through,
- [00:02:05.040]the infrastructure and there's so many details
- [00:02:08.340]and to have them be excited,
- [00:02:11.472]I just loved it.
- [00:02:13.170]Dr. Tang's class has done similar projects
- [00:02:15.750]for Beatrice, Syracuse, and David City.
- [00:02:19.110]A Cornhusker mascot becomes a work of art.
- [00:02:22.080]Ashley Dohe built a life-size paper mache Herbie Husker.
- [00:02:26.010]The sculpture stands about eight feet tall,
- [00:02:28.470]weighs 80 pounds,
- [00:02:29.520]and took Dohe heed two months to construct and paint.
- [00:02:32.550]I figured someone who loves the Huskers
- [00:02:35.610]would want to purchase this
- [00:02:36.630]and I could donate that money to a charity.
- [00:02:40.110]My husband and I are veterans.
- [00:02:41.490]We both work for the university
- [00:02:43.470]and mental health is something that I think
- [00:02:47.190]needs to be addressed,
- [00:02:48.023]not just with veterans, but being veterans,
- [00:02:50.760]that's a very big passion of mine.
- [00:02:53.430]Dohe plans to auction her creation
- [00:02:55.410]and donate the proceeds to the Tunnels of Towers Foundation,
- [00:02:58.980]which helps families of fallen veterans
- [00:03:00.870]and first responders.
- [00:03:02.940]That's what's happening this week at UNL.
- [00:03:05.130]I'm Mackenzie Noble.
- [00:03:06.674](upbeat jazz music continues)
