- [00:00:19.085]as a postdoctoral scholar
- [00:00:20.403]at the University of Iowa
- [00:00:21.805]in the College of Education.
- [00:00:23.523]My background is in materials science
- [00:00:25.442]and engineering.
- [00:00:27.027]The degrees that I got from Iran,
- [00:00:28.795]where I come from,
- [00:00:29.996]and also in higher education
- [00:00:31.414]and student affairs
- [00:00:32.832]from the University of Iowa
- [00:00:34.017]and Oklahoma State University.
- [00:00:35.785]My research is highly interdisciplinary
- [00:00:38.321]and I use different
- [00:00:40.156]theories from various disciplines
- [00:00:42.909]to think about sociology
- [00:00:44.144]of higher education
- [00:00:45.578]through historical
- [00:00:46.813]and political economy lenses,
- [00:00:48.965]with the aim of decolonizing
- [00:00:50.617]higher education.
- [00:00:51.851]In the theory of my research as trans,
- [00:00:55.121]I investigate the relations of
- [00:00:57.524]knowledge and power
- [00:00:58.525]the coloniality of knowledge and power
- [00:01:00.410]in higher education institutions.

- [00:01:03.563]the experiences
- [00:01:04.364]of basic needs and security and precarity
- [00:01:06.950]among college students,
- [00:01:08.568]specifically community college students.
- [00:01:11.387]And then finally, you know,
- [00:01:13.473]study how to be in difficult dialogs
- [00:01:16.493]across different and,
- [00:01:18.378]you know, help
- [00:01:19.162]students and adult learners to develop
- [00:01:22.165]a skills to be in these kinds of dialogs.
- [00:01:24.601]I incorporate these skills
- [00:01:26.236]in the classes that I teach,
- [00:01:27.704]including administrative theory
- [00:01:29.672]and higher education planning.
- [00:01:31.775]I'm also active
- [00:01:32.742]in different organizations
- [00:01:34.277]and associations
- [00:01:35.111]in higher education,
- [00:01:36.312]including ASHE and ACPA,
- [00:01:38.748]as well as regularly attending
- [00:01:41.067]the CIES and ICQI.
- [00:01:43.269]Our program is intentional
- [00:01:45.438]about helping a student succeed.
- [00:01:47.791]In my role,
- [00:01:48.691]I support the students
- [00:01:49.859]to really think
- [00:01:51.444]deeply about who they are,
- [00:01:52.762]as a newer, as a learner and as a scholar
- [00:01:55.999]so that we can better think,
- [00:01:57.367]what does it mean
- [00:01:58.134]to engage
- [00:01:59.152]in higher education as a professional,
- [00:02:01.221]but also how to be in the classroom
- [00:02:03.056]with each other
- [00:02:03.807]and with different learners and norms.
- [00:02:06.075]I believe as students
- [00:02:07.310]who develop their skills
- [00:02:09.112]for engaging across different
- [00:02:10.980]development skills for reflexivity
- [00:02:13.600]are best suited to succeed,

- [00:02:15.885]engaging with the different contents
- [00:02:17.921]that they will be exposed in our program,
- [00:02:20.106]but also to engage
- [00:02:21.341]with the community of learners
- [00:02:22.792]and scholars that we are.
- [00:02:24.477]Learning from me is a practice of joy.
- [00:02:27.080]Actually, I'm feeling happier
- [00:02:29.699]when I actually learning,
- [00:02:30.884]when I go into that mode of wonder.
- [00:02:33.236]So when I am in graduate school,
- [00:02:35.205]I was in the mode of trying
- [00:02:36.956]to learn new things
- [00:02:37.857]and be in that joyful type of community.
- [00:02:40.460]So my invitation for my students
- [00:02:42.629]and my advisees and my supervises
- [00:02:45.315]is to join me in that joyful experiences
- [00:02:48.318]of being in graduate school.
