- [00:00:45.357]Education and Communication at at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:49.357]the Heartland Center, Iowa State University, and the
- [00:00:52.270]Nebraska Community Foundation to host the Chautauqua.
- [00:00:55.819]The event brings together leadership professionals,
- [00:00:58.629]economic development directors, university scholars and individuals
- [00:01:02.229]who support local leaders to engage in conversation that
- [00:01:05.532]rethinks community leadership development.
- [00:01:07.752]The long-term goal is to arrive at a consensus
- [00:01:10.222]on the most effective methods of developing leaders and
- [00:01:13.745]leadership capacity within communities.
- [00:01:16.943]The term “Chautauqua” refers to a meeting in 1874 at Lake Chautauqua, New York,
- [00:01:22.778]that brought together Sunday-school teachers to discuss biblical studies.
- [00:01:27.041]The word, however, has evolved to include
- [00:01:29.602]any meeting that brings together diverse voices and
- [00:01:32.272]perspectives to arrive at a consensus on a topic.
- [00:01:35.143]The Chautauqua approach for leadership development
- [00:01:37.877]will concentrate on creating community-based systems
- [00:01:40.427]that support community members in increasing their
- [00:01:43.117]efficacy and capacity for leading change.
- [00:01:46.129]“That’s the idea behind this project - bringing together diverse voices
- [00:01:49.623]to revolutionize how we do community leadership development,” said
- [00:01:53.453]Dr. Lindsay Hastings, ALEC professor and event co-organizer.
- [00:01:57.893]The Chautauqua will include guided conversations
- [00:02:00.503]that address the concerns of local leaders.
- [00:02:02.763]Topics will include common assets of
- [00:02:04.713]leadership, communities’ successes and challenges,
- [00:02:08.103]what leadership research looks like in practice,
- [00:02:10.914]how to think differently about community leadership systems,
- [00:02:14.114]curriculum delivery methods between individuals and cohorts,
- [00:02:17.458]mentoring structures and the most effective locations for leadership training.
- [00:02:21.980]Interactive discussions will cover inclusive methods of delivering
- [00:02:25.609]these programs to those typically excluded, such as
- [00:02:28.289]those who work late shifts or have limited transportation.
- [00:02:31.992]Key findings of the Chautauqua will be shared through publications and
- [00:02:35.656]presentations to leadership organizations in Nebraska’s
- [00:02:39.166]communities and across the nation.
- [00:02:41.346]A policy brief is also planned, which will offer recommendations
- [00:02:44.344]for communities and leaders as they work to bridge the gap
- [00:02:47.084]between leadership development education and implementation.
- [00:02:51.084]The leadership Chautauqua is from noon to 7pm, Wednesday, Nov. 8
- [00:02:55.884]at the Younes Conference Center-North, in Kearney, Nebraska.
