[00:00:00.000]We’ve had warm breezy days for harvest
[00:00:01.927]this month. Tim Hashman, an Alliance
[00:00:04.372]farmer, was out on Oct. 20 combining
[00:00:06.865]his dry edible beans. The crop is part
[00:00:09.334]of the On-Farm Research project, he’s participating
[00:00:11.802]in testing a product called pod seal.
[00:00:15.034]The project has John Thomas, Nebraska
[00:00:17.354]Extension crops educator,
[00:00:18.670]and Hashman working together.
[00:00:20.499]Pod seal is new to me, so we’re trying
[00:00:23.175]it with the university. It’s a test they
[00:00:25.980]wanted to try. To my understandings it
[00:00:28.252]toughens up the pod, makes it harder to
[00:00:32.916]shatter due to wind and everything else.
[00:00:35.709]With direct harvest, usually, we’re a
[00:00:37.886]little bit later than normal - everybody
[00:00:40.006]else that’s normal on bean harvest. And so,
[00:00:43.181]this might protect it a little longer and
[00:00:47.053]give us a little better yield.
[00:00:49.292]Hashman used an upright pinto variety
[00:00:51.781]called Gleam for the project.
[00:00:54.085]We’ve been doing direct harvest with
[00:00:56.245]upright beans for ten-plus years. Really
[00:01:00.328]like the harvest system and the upright
[00:01:02.683]varieties that they’ve been coming out
[00:01:04.158]with. This year the Gleam has been
[00:01:06.009]doing very well for us.
[00:01:07.545]The research plot being harvested was on
[00:01:09.911]about 50 acres, and while it was small,
[00:01:12.160]still took time as Hashman and Thomas had
[00:01:14.906]to gather samples from the plot with help
[00:01:17.058]from Nebraska Extension Educator Gary Stone.
