- [00:00:00.045]Teachers from across Nebraska and South
- [00:00:02.029]Dakota were part of the inaugural class
- [00:00:04.368]for the Automation in the Heartland
- [00:00:06.173]workshop that was offered at the UNL
- [00:00:08.450]Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center.
- [00:00:11.855]Troy White, UNL Ag leadership, education,
- [00:00:14.509]and communication lecturer in Scottsbluff,
- [00:00:17.321]said the workshop focuses on
- [00:00:19.258]automation in agriculture systems.
- [00:00:22.115]It’s one of the areas that is a standard
- [00:00:26.006]for ag ed. but hasn’t been really taught
- [00:00:28.446]a lot. A lot of the skilled technical
- [00:00:30.418]science teachers across Nebraska teach
- [00:00:32.500]coding and automation, but it’s not
- [00:00:35.244]something the ag teachers have been
- [00:00:37.025]teaching a lot of, even though, there's
- [00:00:38.646]some standards related to it. So, NIFA funded
- [00:00:41.567]funded the workshop so that we could try
- [00:00:44.748]and put together some basic coding and
- [00:00:48.650]microcontrollers and automation systems
- [00:00:51.589]that are usable in agricultural production.
- [00:00:54.624]Livestock and plant systems both. So,
- [00:00:57.736]we have a variety of different setups that
- [00:01:02.894]they worked on. All the teachers went
- [00:01:04.830]home with kits. They each took home
- [00:01:06.916]about $600 worth of umm electronics
- [00:01:11.728]components and controllers and sensors,
- [00:01:13.898]so they can work with their students.
- [00:01:15.923]White said teachers will take the kits back
- [00:01:18.107]to their classes and work with students
- [00:01:20.293]on building their own automated systems.
- [00:01:23.153]Rather than the producer being forced to
- [00:01:25.863]buy a system, hopefully, these students
- [00:01:29.441]can understand how to do it. And then they
- [00:01:32.016]can make their own systems, whether they
- [00:01:34.114]decide to do a small business startup,
- [00:01:36.359]out of a small rural community, which is our
- [00:01:38.668]ideal hope. That they take these skills
- [00:01:40.879]and then they can use
- [00:01:42.417]them to make a career.
- [00:01:45.114]The Scottsbluff Ag leadership, education,
- [00:01:47.196]and communication office has a lending
- [00:01:49.460]library where teachers can check out a
- [00:01:51.186]3-D printer if their school doesn’t have
- [00:01:53.314]one. Registration for the next
- [00:01:55.127]workshop will be held in November.
- [00:01:57.767]I’m Chabella Guzman with the UNL Panhandle
- [00:01:59.977]Research Extension and Education Center.
