- [00:00:04.404]My name is Channel Cecelia McLewis.
- [00:00:06.690]I am an assistant
- [00:00:07.457]professor here
- [00:00:08.508]at University of Nebraska, Lincoln
- [00:00:10.543]in the Educational Administration
- [00:00:12.328]Department.
- [00:00:13.513]My research includes
- [00:00:14.814]understanding and examining
- [00:00:16.816]how does systems of power and oppression
- [00:00:18.952]shape how black folks
- [00:00:20.754]and other minoritized group
- [00:00:22.489]enter, as well as
- [00:00:23.673]experience universities.
- [00:00:25.875]So I entered UNL in 2023.
- [00:00:29.496]And so prior to that,
- [00:00:30.697]I was at UCLA
- [00:00:32.082]as well as for my doctoral studies
- [00:00:33.900]as well as my post-doc.
- [00:00:36.002]And so much of how I think of research
- [00:00:39.339]as well as teaching and advising
- [00:00:41.157]is from a critical perspective,
- [00:00:42.976]really thinking
- [00:00:43.777]about using interdisciplinary lens,
- [00:00:46.029]rather it be sociology, gender studies,
- [00:00:48.615]as well as black studies
- [00:00:49.716]to really think
- [00:00:50.350]about educational trajectories
- [00:00:52.185]as well as experiences.
- [00:00:53.737]And so working with me
- [00:00:54.788]is really going to
- [00:00:56.589]be centered on students, right.
- [00:00:58.842]And not only just thinking
- [00:01:00.126]of the experiences of students,
- [00:01:01.361]but as well as what does it mean
- [00:01:02.679]to be a change agent.
- [00:01:04.364]So what I look for in a student
- [00:01:05.815]is really thinking
- [00:01:06.533]about what it looks like
- [00:01:07.667]to create a research team.
- [00:01:09.502]And so central of that
- [00:01:10.703]is thinking of us as colleagues.
- [00:01:12.839]Really centering
- [00:01:13.673]a collaborative experience
- [00:01:15.859]is really important.
- [00:01:17.210]Secondly, really a common understanding
- [00:01:20.280]that the work
- [00:01:20.930]that we do
- [00:01:21.414]is not to remain here in the academy.
- [00:01:24.050]It's nice to have publications,
- [00:01:26.236]present at conferences,
- [00:01:27.620]but how was that work that we're doing
- [00:01:29.806]really not only moving the field forward,
- [00:01:31.708]but also impacting communities.
- [00:01:33.860]And so,
- [00:01:34.644]folks who are interested
- [00:01:35.962]in working with me,
- [00:01:37.163]I hope that they would consider
- [00:01:38.698]how this work
- [00:01:39.799]that we engaging in is not just about me
- [00:01:42.619]or about you,
- [00:01:43.620]but how it's making an impact.
- [00:01:45.889]So my time when I'm not here at UNL
- [00:01:48.291]is spent with family as well as friends.
- [00:01:51.411]I love to travel and try new restaurants.
- [00:01:54.164]I also love a really good coupon deal.
- [00:01:57.383]So, you know, whether it's,
- [00:01:59.536]you know,
- [00:01:59.903]stacking coupons at Target
- [00:02:02.205]to get the best deal or,
- [00:02:04.574]you know, the best
- [00:02:05.909]flight I can find on Google flights,
- [00:02:07.544]those are things that excite me.
- [00:02:09.445]I also enjoy going to concerts.
- [00:02:11.397]I'm not necessarily a big music person.
- [00:02:13.616]Like if you ask me to name that artist
- [00:02:15.985]or name that song, I wouldn't know it.
- [00:02:17.687]But just the experience
- [00:02:19.606]of seeing folks,
- [00:02:20.473]you know, live out their passion
- [00:02:22.559]and the excitement around it
- [00:02:23.843]is why I enjoy going to concerts.
