- [00:00:00.540]Hi, and welcome to
- [00:00:01.740]the College of Journalism and Mass Communications
- [00:00:04.860]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:07.290]or, as we like to call it, the CO JMC family.
- [00:00:10.950]My name is Elisa Smith,
- [00:00:12.630]and I'm the director of advising in our college.
- [00:00:15.180]Today, I will be sharing with you an overview
- [00:00:17.520]of what it looks like to be a student in our college.
- [00:00:20.640]We're excited for you to join us, so let's get started.
- [00:00:24.090]During this presentation, we're gonna cover many topics.
- [00:00:29.010]We're going to begin with an overview of our degrees,
- [00:00:33.516]talk about student expectations and privacy,
- [00:00:37.890]available resources, student involvement,
- [00:00:42.150]and then how to get ahold of us
- [00:00:43.500]if you have any questions.
- [00:00:46.090]We're gonna start first with an overview of our degrees.
- [00:00:51.600]In the College of Journalism and Mass Communication,
- [00:00:54.570]we offer four majors: advertising and public relations,
- [00:00:59.430]broadcasting, with two options,
- [00:01:03.030]news and a media production option
- [00:01:07.170]journalism, and sports media and communication.
- [00:01:11.910]Since all of our majors require the same core classes,
- [00:01:15.540]many students just decide to double major.
- [00:01:19.213]If you're thinking about it and have more questions
- [00:01:21.900]or if you know you'd like to pursue a double major,
- [00:01:24.900]please discuss this with your assigned academic advisor.
- [00:01:29.430]To be eligible for graduation,
- [00:01:31.770]students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours.
- [00:01:36.472]If you divide 120 by eight semesters,
- [00:01:39.960]as in a four year plan,
- [00:01:41.910]students need to enroll in 15 credit hours per semester.
- [00:01:46.650]You might be wondering what would happen
- [00:01:48.360]if you fail or drop a class.
- [00:01:51.150]If that happens,
- [00:01:52.620]you might wanna consider taking a summer course
- [00:01:54.870]to make up the missing credit hours
- [00:01:56.880]so you could still remain on track for graduation.
- [00:02:02.010]Let's break down the 120 credit hours.
- [00:02:08.430]52 of those credits will be allocated
- [00:02:11.190]to your major requirements,
- [00:02:13.590]while the remaining 68 credits will be used
- [00:02:16.380]outside of the college requirements,
- [00:02:18.780]such as in ACEs, minor courses,
- [00:02:23.220]a foreign language class, if necessary,
- [00:02:26.010]which means that you took
- [00:02:27.030]less than four years of language in high school,
- [00:02:29.940]and additional liberal arts electives.
- [00:02:32.997]An achievement-centered education, known as ACE,
- [00:02:37.110]helps students receive a comprehensive education
- [00:02:40.317]that includes exposure to multiple disciplines
- [00:02:43.830]and critical life skills beyond their major.
- [00:02:47.430]This picture shows nine ACEs,
- [00:02:49.560]but there are actually 10 specific ACE courses
- [00:02:52.500]that must each be fulfilled by a specific course.
- [00:02:56.400]Major related courses
- [00:02:57.990]that correspond to a specific ACE
- [00:03:00.210]will not be accepted in our college.
- [00:03:03.030]All of the ACE courses must be outside
- [00:03:06.300]of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications,
- [00:03:09.330]except for ACE 10, which is fulfilled
- [00:03:12.030]by the student's senior capstone or project.
- [00:03:15.510]Each ACE covers a different subject area.
- [00:03:18.570]For example, ACE one is writing,
- [00:03:21.916]ACE two is communications, and ACE three is math.
- [00:03:27.060]In our college, we require that students take
- [00:03:29.940]a statistics class to fulfill this ACE three requirement.
- [00:03:34.530]ACE four is science.
- [00:03:36.540]ACE five is humanities.
- [00:03:39.330]ACE six is social sciences.
- [00:03:42.270]ACE seven is art.
- [00:03:44.640]ACE eight is ethics or social justice
- [00:03:48.066]and ACE nine is global awareness or diversity.
- [00:03:52.410]Students are able to select ACE courses that interest them
- [00:03:56.100]as long as they're outside of our college
- [00:03:58.080]to fulfill their ACE requirements.
- [00:04:00.750]Another way to think about our ACE courses
- [00:04:03.360]is to think of them as general education courses
- [00:04:07.080]that are required by the university.
- [00:04:10.530]Now, let's take a look
- [00:04:11.760]at some of your first semester courses.
- [00:04:14.910]These will include JOMC 100,
- [00:04:18.120]which we'll talk about in a little bit,
- [00:04:20.859]JOMC 101: Introduction to Mass Media,
- [00:04:25.686]JOMC 130 and 131,
- [00:04:29.261]and either AD PR 151 or Sports Media 150 or Journalism 107,
- [00:04:38.520]depending upon your specific major.
- [00:04:41.580]You might also take a language class
- [00:04:43.470]if you still need to fulfill that requirement,
- [00:04:46.110]and an ACE or two.
- [00:04:47.970]This should result in a schedule
- [00:04:49.470]somewhere between 14 to 17 credit hours
- [00:04:52.140]for your first semester.
- [00:04:54.540]Here are the faculty members
- [00:04:55.950]that will be teaching your major-related courses.
- [00:04:59.340]Professor Sharon Baldinelli,
- [00:05:01.860]who will be teaching JMC 101,

- [00:05:20.255]AD PR 151 will be taught by one of two instructors.
- [00:05:24.930]Professor Frauke Hachtman joined our faculty in 2002
- [00:05:29.850]and has developed and taught a variety of courses,
- [00:05:32.700]including media strategy,
- [00:05:34.980]advertising and public relation campaigns,
- [00:05:38.100]global advertising, Fox Sports University,
- [00:05:41.961]personal branding and promotional writing.
- [00:05:45.420]Her research focuses on crisis response advertising,
- [00:05:49.500]the strategic use of emerging media and sports communication
- [00:05:54.000]and international advertising education.
- [00:05:57.690]Professor Brian Hubbard teaches
- [00:05:59.400]the other section of AD PR 151,
- [00:06:02.850]founded ATTO in Mexico,
- [00:06:05.550]and has quickly become
- [00:06:06.690]one of the most awarded and recognized
- [00:06:08.910]integrated marketing agencies in Latin America,
- [00:06:12.360]winning major clients
- [00:06:13.860]such as American Express, Fourth City Bank, and Jose Cuervo.
- [00:06:19.505]Professor Chris Graves has been a reporter
- [00:06:23.520]and a line editor assistant, city editor,
- [00:06:26.310]managing editor and newspaper columnist.
- [00:06:29.550]She has over 30 years of experience in journalism,
- [00:06:32.610]and she teaches our Journalism 107 class.
- [00:06:36.390]Professor John Schrader, who teaches Sports Media 150,
- [00:06:41.220]earned his bachelor's degree here at UNL
- [00:06:44.160]and then embarked on a career in sports radio and TV
- [00:06:47.430]that lasted more than 35 years.
- [00:06:50.190]He has covered Super Bowls, World Series,
- [00:06:53.850]and Major League Baseball All-Star games.
- [00:06:56.910]He won an Emmy award for his work as a host and reporter
- [00:07:01.260]on Comcast Sports Net's Game seven playoff broadcast
- [00:07:05.310]of the San Jose Sharks.
- [00:07:07.590]As you can see, our faculty have
- [00:07:09.480]many years of experience in the field
- [00:07:11.679]and have accomplished many amazing things in the industry.
- [00:07:15.630]It is important that you get connected with them
- [00:07:18.660]and learn from them.
- [00:07:20.280]Building relationships with your faculty
- [00:07:22.679]will help you establish a strong network
- [00:07:27.000]through their connections.
- [00:07:30.060]Next on our agenda is student expectations and privacy.
- [00:07:36.900]Your responsibility as a student academically
- [00:07:40.800]is to maintain a GPA of a 2.0 each semester
- [00:07:45.930]and cumulatively over all semesters.
- [00:07:49.470]This means you should earn at least a C in all your classes
- [00:07:53.760]to earn a GPA of a 2.0.
- [00:07:56.730]In our major courses, students must earn a C
- [00:08:00.060]in order to fulfill our requirements.
- [00:08:03.480]If you do not earn at least a C to fulfill our requirement,
- [00:08:07.680]that means you will need to repeat the course.
- [00:08:11.010]Many minors also require that you earn a C or above as well.
- [00:08:16.170]You will need to discuss specific requirements
- [00:08:18.767]with your academic advisor.
- [00:08:21.540]Finally, in order to graduate
- [00:08:24.000]you must complete all the degree requirements
- [00:08:26.700]that are mandated by your degree to qualify for graduation.
- [00:08:31.980]Besides your academic responsibilities,
- [00:08:34.920]you also have personal responsibilities to keep in mind.
- [00:08:39.270]As a student, it is your personal responsibility
- [00:08:42.600]to communicate with your academic advisor and instructors
- [00:08:47.010]early on in the semester
- [00:08:48.810]if you are struggling with something.
- [00:08:51.210]If you don't reach out,
- [00:08:52.830]we will have no way of knowing your concerns
- [00:08:55.680]so we wouldn't be able to assist you properly.
- [00:08:58.830]We are here to help
- [00:09:00.000]but you must take the initiative to reach out first.
- [00:09:03.990]Next, to be sure to communicate with your parents
- [00:09:07.200]about what is going on in your life.
- [00:09:09.570]They're your biggest supporters and advocates,
- [00:09:12.150]so it is important to keep them updated as well.
- [00:09:15.780]Third, expand your horizons and explore.
- [00:09:19.470]Don't be afraid to try something new.
- [00:09:22.110]It's the only way to know whether you like something or not
- [00:09:25.132]and also it's important to grow.
- [00:09:28.440]Number four, manage your time appropriately.
- [00:09:31.950]In college, managing your time is essential.
- [00:09:35.910]Unlike in high school where students have a set schedule
- [00:09:38.820]and are in class all day,
- [00:09:40.405]in college, you may only have one or two classes a day
- [00:09:44.550]or even none on other days.
- [00:09:46.860]However, this does not mean that you have free time.
- [00:09:50.400]You will need to use this time to study
- [00:09:52.590]and to complete assignments.
- [00:09:54.570]As a general rule, for every credit hour,
- [00:09:57.911]the expectation is that you'll spend
- [00:10:00.000]two to three hours outside of class.
- [00:10:03.150]That means for a three credit hour class
- [00:10:05.790]that you should expect to be putting in
- [00:10:07.620]six to nine hours of work outside of classroom time.
- [00:10:12.030]And finally, seek assistance as soon as it is needed.
- [00:10:16.140]Taking responsibility for your academic success
- [00:10:19.500]is crucial in college.
- [00:10:21.300]By communicating with your advisor and instructors
- [00:10:24.810]and managing your time,
- [00:10:26.610]you can set yourself up to be successful academically
- [00:10:30.510]here in the College of Journalism at UNL.
- [00:10:34.770]FERPA is to education
- [00:10:37.020]what HIPAA is to the medical world.
- [00:10:41.546]The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act,
- [00:10:45.090]known as FERPA, is a federal law
- [00:10:47.820]that affords parents the right to have access
- [00:10:50.310]to their children's education records,
- [00:10:53.010]the right to seek to have the records amended,
- [00:10:55.980]and the right to have some control
- [00:10:57.480]over the disclosure of personally identifiable information
- [00:11:00.660]from education records.
- [00:11:02.770]However, when a student turns 18 years old
- [00:11:07.080]or enters a post-secondary institution at any age,
- [00:11:11.400]the rights under FERPA transfer
- [00:11:13.170]from the parents to the students.
- [00:11:16.050]This means that when you start college,
- [00:11:18.600]your parents no longer have access to your records.
- [00:11:22.050]However, if you would like to let them
- [00:11:25.410]have access to your records,
- [00:11:27.630]then you need to go into MyRed and request this access.
- [00:11:32.010]If not, we cannot provide them any information
- [00:11:34.740]about your grades, your aid, or your billing.
- [00:11:40.140]Next on the agenda is we're going to talk about
- [00:11:43.470]a variety of resources available to you.
- [00:11:47.880]We have four academic advisors
- [00:11:50.070]in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:11:53.580]We are here to support students academically and personally.
- [00:11:58.590]If students have any questions
- [00:12:00.270]about their degree plan or grades
- [00:12:02.848]or are struggling with anything,
- [00:12:05.320]please get in touch with your specific academic advisor.
- [00:12:09.690]Remember, your academic advisor is here to help you.
- [00:12:13.800]Do not be afraid to reach out
- [00:12:15.810]even if you think it's a silly question.
- [00:12:18.450]All questions are important.
- [00:12:20.580]This will help us guide you.
- [00:12:22.740]We encourage you to reach out early.
- [00:12:25.590]Please do not wait until the end of the semester
- [00:12:28.200]when it might be too late to make any changes.
- [00:12:33.840]Another in-house resource is Sarah Troupe.
- [00:12:37.380]Sarah is our academic navigator.
- [00:12:39.810]She's here to provide extra support.
- [00:12:42.600]If you are facing personal hardships
- [00:12:44.760]or need help connecting with campus offices,
- [00:12:47.610]please get in touch with her.
- [00:12:49.332]She is here to help you,
- [00:12:51.210]especially when the academic advisors
- [00:12:53.010]get really busy during peak times.
- [00:12:55.890]Once Sarah speaks with you,
- [00:12:57.450]she will relay the information back to advisors
- [00:13:00.390]who will be able to help follow up with you.
- [00:13:03.360]So as you can see, there's always someone around
- [00:13:06.270]to be able to help and support you.
- [00:13:09.600]Let's take a minute and look at
- [00:13:11.160]the JOMC 100 First Year Experience course.
- [00:13:15.480]This class is designed for incoming freshmen,
- [00:13:18.930]students first attending a four year institution,
- [00:13:21.720]and students transferring into
- [00:13:23.550]the College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
- [00:13:26.370]It's taught by one of the academic advisors.
- [00:13:29.250]We will open this class earlier
- [00:13:30.960]than all of your other classes.
- [00:13:32.970]The Canvas site will open two weeks
- [00:13:34.830]before the start of the semester
- [00:13:36.750]so you can complete the Start Smart activities.
- [00:13:40.590]This class is designed to help you be successful in college.
- [00:13:43.830]We will discuss college basics
- [00:13:45.930]and we will work together to create a graduation plan.
- [00:13:49.560]In this class, we will also give you tools
- [00:13:51.960]to help you manage your time effectively.
- [00:13:54.540]This is a class that holistically helps you be successful
- [00:13:57.900]in your first year here at UNL.
- [00:14:00.630]Please take advantage of this class
- [00:14:02.460]and ask as many questions as you can.
- [00:14:05.220]Typically, the advisor who is teaching this class
- [00:14:08.100]is your assigned advisor
- [00:14:09.660]so you can start building a strong relationship with her.
- [00:14:12.840]You will also connect with other freshmen.
- [00:14:16.440]Incoming CO JMC students are required
- [00:14:19.493]to have a laptop or MacBook that at least meets
- [00:14:23.610]the minimum requirements shown on the screen.
- [00:14:26.790]This is necessary
- [00:14:27.960]for the assignments that you will have to complete.
- [00:14:32.100]Since this is a requirement,
- [00:14:34.050]students are often able to use financial aid funds
- [00:14:37.006]to purchase either a laptop or MacBook.
- [00:14:40.320]Also, as a UNL student,
- [00:14:42.570]you have free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud.
- [00:14:46.560]You will also use this for completing assignments.
- [00:14:51.690]If you had an IEP or a 504 plan
- [00:14:56.070]or any type of accommodations in high school,
- [00:14:58.800]you need to register with
- [00:14:59.910]our Office of Services for Students with Disability.
- [00:15:03.090]which is referred to as SSD on campus.
- [00:15:06.480]Your accommodations from high school
- [00:15:08.160]do not automatically transfer over with you.
- [00:15:11.220]Our SSD office will work with you.
- [00:15:14.280]They're extremely confidential
- [00:15:16.020]and will never share details about you.
- [00:15:18.570]They will simply provide you with a letter
- [00:15:20.520]that you share with your faculty
- [00:15:22.380]that lists the accommodations you are entitled to receive,
- [00:15:25.650]but will not share why.
- [00:15:27.480]That is your information alone
- [00:15:29.670]and you can choose to share or not share.
- [00:15:32.520]Some reasons of why you should register with our SSD office
- [00:15:35.970]include physical disabilities, learning disabilities,
- [00:15:40.584]ADHD, chronic health issues, mental health conditions,
- [00:15:46.020]complications with pregnancy,
- [00:15:48.119]long-term Covid effects, and temporary injuries.
- [00:15:53.466]Do not hesitate to reach out to the SSD office.
- [00:15:57.060]They're here to support you.
- [00:15:58.980]Please don't put this off until you run into an issue.
- [00:16:01.950]Make sure you get your accommodation set.
- [00:16:04.710]You can either call or email
- [00:16:06.570]the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
- [00:16:10.470]In addition to your academic advisor,
- [00:16:13.170]your academic navigator, and your instructors,
- [00:16:16.290]there is much additional support
