- [00:00:03.630]Welcome back, Kanata Kick-off.
- [00:00:04.890]Huskers in the Northwestern Wildcats today, 2:40 kickoff.
- [00:00:08.070]And as we do every week, a chance to sit down
- [00:00:09.520]before the game with the chancellor
- [00:00:11.400]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.200]Dr. Rodney Bennett, great to be back with you.
- [00:00:15.900]We had a bi-week last week.
- [00:00:17.040]We had fall break.
- [00:00:18.120]I hope you got your...
- [00:00:19.110]You probably didn't get a chance
- [00:00:19.980]to recharge your batteries too much during fall break.
- [00:00:22.530]Not much recharging took place during fall break.
- [00:00:25.108]I did use it as an opportunity
- [00:00:27.180]to get some stacks of papers sort of situated, I'll say,
- [00:00:31.170]that were on the corner of the desk.
- [00:00:32.669]But we had good weather, it was really nice
- [00:00:36.150]for our students to have a little time to go home
- [00:00:39.120]and hit the reset button,
- [00:00:40.090]get some of mom and daddy's good cooking,
- [00:00:42.388]get the laundry done properly, and to get back.
- [00:00:46.830]I do wanna tell you, Greg,
- [00:00:48.030]that I appreciate our fans and listeners
- [00:00:51.426]who contacted us or me about winter gear.
- [00:00:55.740]I actually had people who gave me some suggestions.
- [00:00:58.515]I have not made any purchases yet,
- [00:01:01.590]but I suspect that I need to probably do that straight away.
- [00:01:05.910]Yeah, late next week, and it could change.
- [00:01:08.220]These forecasts change.
- [00:01:09.120]They're talking about highs in the 40s.
- [00:01:10.860]Well, Chancellor, a Husker student
- [00:01:12.690]made some big news recently.
- [00:01:14.220]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:01:15.450]And I know you like to brag on our students.
- [00:01:17.249]I do.
- [00:01:18.180]We're so proud of Mr. Luke Farritor.
- [00:01:20.880]I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly.
- [00:01:22.956]Who clearly comes from good stock.
- [00:01:25.530]His daddy is a professor
- [00:01:27.410]here at the university in our College of Engineering,
- [00:01:30.939]and we're so proud of Luke for what he is doing.
- [00:01:35.460]Luke developed a machine learning algorithm,
- [00:01:38.420]and used subtle small scale differences in surface texture,
- [00:01:43.088]which is very impressive.
- [00:01:45.450]I wish that I could dissect that more for our listeners,
- [00:01:50.010]but the good part about it, and I think the part
- [00:01:52.620]that's very interesting to a lot of us,
- [00:01:54.720]all of it's interesting, but one thing
- [00:01:56.400]that we continue to talk about
- [00:01:57.634]is the artificial intelligence, and the ways in which AI
- [00:02:02.711]continue to influence the way we go about our daily lives
- [00:02:07.005]and the way that AI begins to elevate the citizenry
- [00:02:11.940]all across the state and around the world.
- [00:02:14.220]And I know that we have young people like Luke
- [00:02:16.295]under the leadership and guidance, I'm sure of his daddy
- [00:02:19.800]over in the College of Engineering,
- [00:02:21.780]really speaks to the holistic development
- [00:02:24.240]that we're hoping to accomplish here
- [00:02:26.400]at UNL with our students.
- [00:02:27.930]Gonna hear a lot about AI, I think, in the coming decade.
- [00:02:30.510]Speaking of competitions, the governor, Jim Pillen,
- [00:02:33.030]last week announced a new venture competition
- [00:02:35.100]to celebrate and encourage student-led entrepreneurship
- [00:02:38.760]and innovation in Nebraska.
- [00:02:39.954]How are Husker students
- [00:02:41.069]getting involved in this, Chancellor?
- [00:02:42.660]Well first, Greg, let me tell you about the governor.
- [00:02:45.000]You know, the governor and I have a great relationship,
- [00:02:47.700]goes back many years.
- [00:02:49.165]He never misses an opportunity to pick at me for something,
- [00:02:52.620]and I welcome that banter back and forth with the governor.
- [00:02:56.310]So we were very excited with his new initiative
- [00:02:59.084]under the new venture competition.
- [00:03:02.473]Time will not allow me to fully go into each of these areas,
- [00:03:06.630]but there are seven categories
- [00:03:09.570]for which a student may compete,
- [00:03:12.028]and then there are some requirements
- [00:03:14.400]related to what a team looks like,
- [00:03:18.030]and it looks like by all accounts that we, our students,
- [00:03:21.360]are well prepared to develop
- [00:03:23.250]the business proposals that are required.
- [00:03:26.119]They'll do a great job interviewing with the committee
- [00:03:29.340]that will review all the proposals,
- [00:03:31.230]and ultimately make a selection,
- [00:03:33.348]and I think it plays to conversations
- [00:03:36.450]that the governor and I have had
- [00:03:38.357]as it relates to talent acquisition, the pipeline,
- [00:03:42.960]and certainly retaining talent in the state of Nebraska,
- [00:03:47.670]and creating a pathway for those students.
- [00:03:50.580]And when one looks at the categories that are listed there,
- [00:03:53.878]many of them are in biotech, or ag tech, or clean tech,
- [00:03:59.220]or advanced manufacturing.
- [00:04:01.620]All of those are areas across the state
- [00:04:03.840]for which there are has a need for new and emerging talent.
- [00:04:07.710]So I'm excited the governor has taken us down this road,
- [00:04:10.578]and I'm more excited that UNL students
- [00:04:13.228]will have an opportunity to be a part of the competition.
- [00:04:16.500]Absolutely, great stuff for students
- [00:04:18.870]to get involved here on the campus.
- [00:04:20.670]Good to see you.
- [00:04:21.503]Enjoy the game today, and we'll chat again next week.
- [00:04:23.610]Thank you, brother.
- [00:04:24.443]Always good to be with you.
- [00:04:25.276]Chancellor Rodney Bennett with us
- [00:04:26.700]here on "Kanata Kick-off."
- [00:04:27.960]Matt Coney's back with the big 10 blitz coming up next.
