[00:00:09.960]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Rodney Bennett.
[00:00:12.240]Classes resumed today.
[00:00:13.650]We had a little fall break (Rodney laughs)
[00:00:14.580]that probably didn't apply to a chancellor,
[00:00:16.410]but I know you always love
[00:00:17.340]seeing your students around campus.
[00:00:18.630]It was fall break on campus and what a fall break it was.
[00:00:22.740]We had some awesome weather,
[00:00:24.570]as I know, you know, the last couple of days.
[00:00:27.450]And it was really nice to have a little bit of time
[00:00:30.810]to get caught up on some notes and sort of loose ends
[00:00:33.690]that we're sort of sitting on the corner of the desk.
[00:00:36.720]But there's no place like a university campus
[00:00:40.500]when students are here.
[00:00:41.760]And the energy and the movement,
[00:00:44.490]and just sort of the excitement,
[00:00:45.990]and the hope, the real hope for our future

[00:00:50.100]knowing that there are so many young people

[00:00:54.180]So as much as we enjoyed the fall break
[00:00:56.790]and having a little bit of time to get caught up,

[00:01:09.270]get to have some of Mom and Daddy's good cooking,

[00:01:17.730]We mentioned some stuff about research.
[00:01:19.950]University does so much high-level research,
[00:01:22.530]but that also open-source opportunities
[00:01:24.690]for students to get involved.
[00:01:25.560]Yeah, it does. It really does.
[00:01:27.120]In fact, one of the things
[00:01:28.230]that we have been talking about for years
[00:01:30.840]in public higher education, especially at R1 institutions,
[00:01:34.830]as a reason to come to an institution
[00:01:38.100]like the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
[00:01:40.650]is the opportunity to be paired with and mentored
[00:01:44.190]by a member of our research faculty.
[00:01:47.550]When you think about entrepreneurship,
[00:01:49.680]when you think about agriculture and natural resources,
[00:01:52.830]when you think about all the disciplines that we offer,
[00:01:56.340]the opportunity for students to learn under the tutelage
[00:02:00.630]of seasoned faculty members
[00:02:02.850]is a big draw for students and for their families.
[00:02:06.660]And plus, I like using the word tutelage.
[00:02:09.030]It's one of those that I think is underused
[00:02:11.400]in our vocabulary.
[00:02:12.450]So whenever I can use tutelage, I like to include it.
[00:02:15.780]You get a gold star
[00:02:16.702]for that one beginning today. (Rodney laughing)
[00:02:18.330]You know, internships are a big part
[00:02:20.700]of the college experience,
[00:02:21.533]but being a part of a research team
[00:02:22.920]can certainly be like an on-campus internship.
[00:02:24.523]That's right, that's right.
[00:02:25.380]Well, one of the things, even at R1 institutions,
[00:02:28.350]and I say, "Even like R1 institutions,"
[00:02:30.810]we want to be a part of workforce development.
[00:02:34.500]You know, we want to make sure
[00:02:35.760]that our students are ready on day one,
[00:02:39.240]to have an impact with their employers.
[00:02:42.090]And the more you talk to the business community,
[00:02:44.820]and I will be with the local Lincoln business community
[00:02:48.960]a little bit in November,
[00:02:51.780]they want our students to be job ready.
[00:02:55.260]And so we'd like to think about the relationship
[00:02:58.050]between the student and the faculty member
[00:03:01.230]from that mentorship perspective,
[00:03:04.050]allows them to be more prepared
[00:03:06.540]for what they're likely to encounter
[00:03:08.760]the very first day they appear at their job site.
