- [00:00:02.850]Hi everyone, welcome to UNL
- [00:00:04.950]and to the College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:00:07.380]and Natural Resources or CASNR for short.
- [00:00:10.590]We're so glad to have you here
- [00:00:12.120]amongst our newest group of of CASNR students.
- [00:00:16.680]We want to start by making a few introductions
- [00:00:18.690]so you know who will be coming around.
- [00:00:20.910]Tiffany Heng-Moss is our Dean and she puts student success
- [00:00:23.880]as her primary goal for everyone,
- [00:00:25.920]so you know that you're in great hands here in CASNR
- [00:00:29.040]And Tiffany and the rest
- [00:00:30.150]of the Dean's Office staff are currently located
- [00:00:32.490]in the East Campus Union.
- [00:00:34.200]So I feel confident you'll go to the union for coffee,
- [00:00:37.470]for snacks at Herbie's Market
- [00:00:39.330]and that the Dean's office is located right next
- [00:00:41.430]to Herbie's Market on the second floor.
- [00:00:43.650]And here's another great group
- [00:00:45.120]of people who are part of our success team.
- [00:00:48.900]It's Director Megan Rothenberger, Sierra Votaw,
- [00:00:51.960]who's our Student Success Coach,
- [00:00:53.250]and the brand new to CASNR,
- [00:00:54.870]Lindsay Daniels who will be our academic navigator.
- [00:00:57.870]And they're here to help
- [00:00:58.703]with a wealth of different activities,
- [00:01:00.630]student support, Start Smart, all of that.
- [00:01:03.780]So student support wise, most
- [00:01:06.030]of you that are coming in have come
- [00:01:07.380]from another institution, but some of you are new as well.
- [00:01:11.880]Our Student Support Center is here to help.
- [00:01:14.190]Family emergencies,
- [00:01:15.731]maybe you know how different situations worked
- [00:01:18.570]at your old institution, but not here,
- [00:01:20.580]so that's a great thing that we can do,
- [00:01:22.680]is help find whatever resource you need
- [00:01:25.590]whatever service, maybe you're just adjusting
- [00:01:28.260]to the new college environment or need someone to talk to,
- [00:01:31.020]they are here.
- [00:01:32.460]And so, easy to talk to, easy to find.
- [00:01:34.800]And they may reach out to you involving registration,
- [00:01:38.760]survey follow up, academic standing, things like that.
- [00:01:42.180]And one great program that we offer
- [00:01:43.740]in CASNR is our CASNR Cares program.
- [00:01:46.050]And this is our go-to for crazy things that happen to you
- [00:01:49.490]in your life, student emergencies, things like that.
- [00:01:54.120]On occasion, someone has their appendix rupture.
- [00:01:57.150]Oh my word, what do we do?
- [00:01:58.290]We call our CASNR Cares line
- [00:01:59.640]and they will let your faculty know that you're out and why.
- [00:02:02.220]And so they're a great resource for you.
- [00:02:04.200]And you can call, your family can call,
- [00:02:07.230]we're here to just help make things go smoothly
- [00:02:09.060]when life is happening to you.
- [00:02:11.250]And we do have AGRI 042 class
- [00:02:13.530]that you'll be hearing more about and you'll be seeing
- [00:02:15.600]in your Canvas very, very soon.
- [00:02:18.180]This is a course just to get you up to date
- [00:02:21.210]on things that are happening in the college
- [00:02:23.160]and kind of get you acclimated to UNL.
- [00:02:25.170]So we do have this course and it's shown as AGRI 042,
- [00:02:30.390]and then this whole long name in Canvas.
- [00:02:32.880]What it is, is just kind
- [00:02:34.080]of the precursor class to get everyone started.
- [00:02:36.510]It's pass, no pass.
- [00:02:37.800]It opens about a month before school starts.
- [00:02:40.320]So we want you to kind of go through it,
- [00:02:42.660]know how everything works,
- [00:02:43.860]practice uploading some documents to Canvas,
- [00:02:46.050]things like that.
- [00:02:47.730]And they're just going to help you
- [00:02:48.660]with all those next steps.
- [00:02:49.590]And Sierra is our contact if you have any questions
- [00:02:51.870]about this program.
- [00:02:53.340]And then we have this great team in our CASNR Career Hub.
- [00:02:57.810]And it's Julie, Darrell and Stephanie.
- [00:02:59.880]They're here to help with everything that relates
- [00:03:02.250]to finding a job or an internship or an on-campus job.
- [00:03:07.050]One thing that we offer here at UNL
- [00:03:09.297]and in CASNR that you might've heard us talk about
- [00:03:11.670]when you came for your campus visit
- [00:03:13.020]was something called Ensuring Your Future.
- [00:03:14.550]And this is our guarantee that you'll have a job offer
- [00:03:17.220]in your area of interest within six months of graduation
- [00:03:20.220]or we will pay to retrain you.
- [00:03:23.190]So really great options in that area.
- [00:03:25.740]We're going to make sure that we've aligned our curriculum
- [00:03:27.690]with jobs that you're going to have.
- [00:03:29.040]And the CASNR Career Team is a group
- [00:03:31.410]that's going to help you get there.
- [00:03:33.630]So we do always like to talk about tips for student success.
- [00:03:37.260]We individually advise in CASNR.
- [00:03:39.240]So no matter what your major,
- [00:03:41.070]whether it's forensic science
- [00:03:42.210]or animal science or water science,
- [00:03:43.980]you're going to have one person
- [00:03:44.820]who's going to work with you,
- [00:03:46.200]keep you on track to graduate in a timely manner,
- [00:03:48.810]look at all those courses that you might have brought in
- [00:03:51.210]from another institution.
- [00:03:52.380]They're here to help with all that.
- [00:03:54.480]In most cases for this spring semester,
- [00:03:58.110]NSE advisor will be the same
- [00:03:59.640]as your regular advisor, but maybe not.
- [00:04:01.740]So don't freak out if that happens.
- [00:04:04.050]But before the first day of school,
- [00:04:06.660]it'll be listed in MyRED,
- [00:04:08.130]who your advisor is and it'll be in the Student Success Hub,
- [00:04:11.679]you can reach out to them to make appointments.
- [00:04:14.190]And your advisor's here to help with class scheduling,
- [00:04:17.130]questions you have about careers, that sort of thing.
- [00:04:21.060]Of course, many of you have been to school before
- [00:04:23.340]so you know it's important to go to class.
- [00:04:25.170]So we'll just leave that on there.
- [00:04:27.420]Take advantage of office hours,
- [00:04:28.680]especially as you're getting used to a new school.
- [00:04:30.690]It's really good to have those connections
- [00:04:33.180]and meet faculty face-to-face.
- [00:04:34.560]Our faculty here are very approachable
- [00:04:36.330]so keep that in mind.
- [00:04:37.650]And of course, we always have to put the no plagiarism
- [00:04:40.590]and academic dishonesty in for everything.
- [00:04:43.380]So I am sure you've already figured out
- [00:04:46.080]that organization is key.
- [00:04:47.820]Keeping a planner or whether that's a paper document,
- [00:04:50.760]your Google Calendar, whatever it is,
- [00:04:53.430]make sure you're keeping track
- [00:04:54.690]of all your assignments and things like that.
- [00:04:57.450]There is a great academic calendar on the UNL website
- [00:05:00.330]for this year and a proposed one for next year.
- [00:05:02.670]So look at when dates are for spring break,
- [00:05:05.190]when classes get done in May,
- [00:05:06.540]all those important next steps.
- [00:05:08.520]Sometimes there's a sneaky day in there that we get off
- [00:05:11.040]and you don't want to go to class
- [00:05:12.630]on a day that everybody else is out.
- [00:05:14.310]And make sure that you're writing down from your syllabus,
- [00:05:16.320]all your tests, quizzes, paper projects, all of that.
- [00:05:20.910]And then of course,
- [00:05:21.743]you're going to have a new Huskers email now.
- [00:05:24.180]Yay! So keep that in mind.
- [00:05:25.483]Your instructions will be coming after NSE,
- [00:05:29.490]but all university communication comes through this.
- [00:05:32.100]So faculty email, staff email,
- [00:05:34.680]Sierra sends a weekly email and Stephanie send weekly emails
- [00:05:37.710]about things happening on campus.
- [00:05:39.330]So all of that is going to go into your Huskers.
- [00:05:41.220]So make sure that you've got that working.
- [00:05:43.650]I always say you don't want to miss a snow day
- [00:05:47.460]because you didn't check your email
- [00:05:49.590]or a faculty member is sick
- [00:05:50.910]and you don't have an eight o'clock class.
- [00:05:52.260]I want to know that before I get there.
- [00:05:53.730]So keep that in mind.
- [00:05:55.440]Get your Huskers email all set up.
- [00:05:57.780]And then we do send weekly emails.
- [00:05:59.640]The Insider Connections is on Monday.
- [00:06:01.680]CASNR Career News is on Tuesday.
- [00:06:03.630]We try to get everything from the college
- [00:06:05.490]into those two emails so that you know you can look at those
- [00:06:08.040]and see what's up to date.
- [00:06:09.450]And then we do have lots of social media methods
- [00:06:11.850]so make sure you're keeping track
- [00:06:13.590]of all of that and knowing what's happening.
- [00:06:17.340]And then we also like to talk about student success, right?
- [00:06:20.700]And we know the classroom is part of it.
- [00:06:22.410]We've already kind of covered that,
- [00:06:23.820]but we know that there's a lot that happens
- [00:06:25.260]outside the classroom that's also part of this experience.
- [00:06:27.900]So chances to do undergraduate research
- [00:06:30.330]from the day you get here,
- [00:06:32.010]chances to learn outside the classroom
- [00:06:33.810]through internships, experiential learning,
- [00:06:36.300]we have lots of opportunities for hands-on here.
- [00:06:39.210]We have 500 plus clubs and organizations at the university
- [00:06:42.420]and more than 50 in our college.
- [00:06:44.250]So look for ways to get connected,
- [00:06:45.870]especially when you're coming in the spring semester.
- [00:06:48.240]Get involved in a club right away
- [00:06:49.620]so you get to meet people outside of your class
- [00:06:51.900]and get excited about something to look forward to.
- [00:06:54.330]Education abroad is back and going strong,
- [00:06:56.490]so keep that in mind as well.
- [00:06:58.380]Lots of opportunities to travel
- [00:07:00.076]whether it's in the US or outside the US.
- [00:07:03.030]And these are a lot
- [00:07:04.170]of short-term trips where you really get to learn
- [00:07:06.060]about yourself and about other cultures.
- [00:07:10.050]And then make sure
- [00:07:11.010]that you understand at UNL, all of our student systems.
- [00:07:14.070]This is the MyUNL page.
- [00:07:15.630]And this is really a good link to have bookmarked.
- [00:07:19.530]It's a homepage for all of our student systems.
- [00:07:21.480]So things like Canvas, the Student Success Hub, MyRED,
- [00:07:26.370]all of that is right in there.
- [00:07:28.410]Firefly, if you have a student job
- [00:07:30.180]and you need to turn your hours in,
- [00:07:31.440]that's where you do that.
- [00:07:33.330]So Canvas is your home for all your classes.
- [00:07:35.550]That's where syllabi are posted,
- [00:07:36.990]grades, assignments, that's where you'll upload things.
- [00:07:39.930]We're going to practice that in Start Smart
- [00:07:41.490]so you're good to go.
- [00:07:42.660]The Student Success Hub is awesome.
- [00:07:44.460]That's where you schedule appointments
- [00:07:45.720]with instructors, advisors, people
- [00:07:48.030]in our Student Success Hub or in our CASNR Career Hub,
- [00:07:51.420]all of that you can schedule through there.
- [00:07:53.730]And then of course, MyRED, you found if you're already here
- [00:07:56.160]because that's how you have paid your enrollment deposit,
- [00:08:00.330]you've worked through different uploading transcripts
- [00:08:03.750]and things like that.
- [00:08:04.680]That's also where you can update your contact info.
- [00:08:07.791]Bills will come through there.
- [00:08:09.630]It's where you find your advisor.
- [00:08:10.650]It's also where you will register for classes.
- [00:08:14.310]And then parking, parking is always a big deal.
- [00:08:17.370]You can purchase your parking permit.
- [00:08:18.990]I encourage you to go online
- [00:08:20.430]'cause they have a really nice tree of resources
- [00:08:22.830]of where you're going to be living and so forth.
- [00:08:24.720]If you're living off campus,
- [00:08:25.890]commuter parking is always a nice thing.
- [00:08:28.500]Or perimeter parking
- [00:08:29.727]and then riding the bus back and forth between campuses.
- [00:08:32.310]I know we can all drive.
- [00:08:33.510]We love to drive.
- [00:08:34.410]We're Midwestern, we like to drive
- [00:08:35.790]but the bus is really nice for getting us back and forth.
- [00:08:38.370]You pay for the bus with your tuition and fees,
- [00:08:40.710]so keep that in mind as well.
- [00:08:44.580]That's really all I've got for you this morning.
- [00:08:46.680]We are here to help as you need it.
- [00:08:49.320]Let us know what we can do in any way, shape, or form.
- [00:08:52.350]And we are always, always, always excited.
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
You can always jump over to MediaHub and check it out there.
