- [00:00:04.260]Hello, thank you for joining us to learn more
- [00:00:06.510]about the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
- [00:00:09.660]My name is Emily Griffin Overocker
- [00:00:11.790]and I'm part of the Student Success Team
- [00:00:15.390]here in the college.
- [00:00:20.160]During our time together,
- [00:00:21.540]I wanna tell you a little bit more about the HLCFPA,
- [00:00:25.230]or Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts,
- [00:00:28.200]and your support team.
- [00:00:29.760]We'll talk about your degree program in depth.
- [00:00:32.190]We'll learn about advising and success planning tools
- [00:00:34.830]and wrap up the session by talking about some resources
- [00:00:37.830]and discover opportunities available for you in the college.
- [00:00:42.840]To help you understand
- [00:00:44.040]how the different terms university and college are used,
- [00:00:47.460]I want to show you a diagram
- [00:00:49.170]of how the university is divided into different colleges.
- [00:00:53.130]And you can see our college
- [00:00:54.510]highlighted kind of in the middle of the screen in red.
- [00:00:58.080]You'll see often our college referred to
- [00:01:00.450]as Fine and Performing Arts, or just FPA for short.
- [00:01:04.740]Our college is divided up into three schools,
- [00:01:08.070]the School of Art, Art History and Design,
- [00:01:10.920]the Glenn Korff School of Music,
- [00:01:12.540]which includes dance,
- [00:01:14.220]and the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film,
- [00:01:16.740]which includes the Emerging Media Arts program.
- [00:01:22.050]So I mentioned that I was part of the Student Success Team,
- [00:01:24.720]and I'm gonna tell you a little bit more about us
- [00:01:26.670]and what we do.
- [00:01:28.200]We're really excited
- [00:01:29.220]that last year we were able to open a Student Success Center
- [00:01:32.580]designed to help you connect
- [00:01:34.110]to any of the academic and personal resources
- [00:01:36.900]you may need throughout your time in college.
- [00:01:39.870]One of the great features of the Student Success Center
- [00:01:43.560]is the pop-in pantry.
- [00:01:45.540]This is a place where you can get free food
- [00:01:47.760]or hygiene items,
- [00:01:49.050]even grab a snack between classes.
- [00:01:51.720]The Student Success Center is located
- [00:01:53.430]in the Woods Art Building, room 111.
- [00:01:56.430]The Woods Art Building is next to the Sheldon Art Gallery
- [00:01:58.980]and across from the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
- [00:02:04.770]Academic advising is a really important part
- [00:02:07.830]of your time here at UNL.
- [00:02:10.714]You'll have an academic advisor
- [00:02:12.270]who will help you with your academic, personal,
- [00:02:14.730]and professional goals and questions,
- [00:02:17.400]help you plan out your degree,
- [00:02:19.200]and find extracurricular activities
- [00:02:21.720]that complement your education.
- [00:02:24.090]This is really supposed to be a two-way street,
- [00:02:26.550]so make sure you get to know your advisor
- [00:02:28.380]and plan to see them at least once every semester.
- [00:02:34.980]You all probably have already decided on what your major is,
- [00:02:38.100]but if not, that's okay,
- [00:02:39.540]you still have time.
- [00:02:41.250]The screen is showing you all of the different majors
- [00:02:43.620]that we offer in our college.
- [00:02:45.630]You'll notice that some are listed as BFA,
- [00:02:48.930]which stands for Bachelor of Fine Arts,
- [00:02:51.930]or BA, Bachelor of Arts.
- [00:02:54.630]You'll also see under the School of Music a BM,
- [00:02:57.960]which is a Bachelor of Music,
- [00:02:59.490]or BME, Bachelor of Music Education.
- [00:03:02.970]If you're in one of these majors
- [00:03:04.620]that has two different options,
- [00:03:06.780]don't worry, your advisor will help you figure out
- [00:03:09.180]which is the best path for you depending on your goals
- [00:03:12.690]and what you want your college experience to look like.
- [00:03:17.910]Speaking of your degree,
- [00:03:19.500]there are so many different components
- [00:03:21.570]that go into making up your degree here at the university.
- [00:03:25.350]The screen shows some of the major components
- [00:03:27.990]that make up your degree,
- [00:03:29.820]and we'll talk about some of them in depth now.
- [00:03:35.460]The first part of your degree
- [00:03:37.050]is what we call experiential learning.
- [00:03:39.570]If you know somebody who went to school at UNL,
- [00:03:42.330]a cousin, a relative, a friend,
- [00:03:45.690]they may not have had this requirement
- [00:03:47.310]because it is fairly new.
- [00:03:49.470]We require all students
- [00:03:51.420]to complete an experiential learning designated course.
- [00:03:55.770]It could include something like internships, research,
- [00:03:58.770]creative activities, or international engagement,
- [00:04:01.320]like study abroad.
- [00:04:03.030]The cool thing about being an FPA
- [00:04:05.430]is that we've built this into your requirements
- [00:04:08.700]so you don't have to do anything extra
- [00:04:10.650]to make sure that you check this box
- [00:04:12.600]for experiential learning.
- [00:04:14.640]That said, I would encourage you to stretch yourself,
- [00:04:18.090]think about additional internships, research,
- [00:04:20.340]creative activities, or even a study abroad experience,
- [00:04:23.370]to make your college experience the best it can be
- [00:04:26.370]and make sure that you're ready
- [00:04:27.480]for whatever is after college.
- [00:04:31.440]The next part of your degree
- [00:04:32.640]is what we call the ACE courses.
- [00:04:34.980]These are also known as Gen Eds.
- [00:04:38.130]There are 10 different categories
- [00:04:40.110]that make up the ACE requirement.
- [00:04:42.420]You can see those listed on the screen.
- [00:04:44.760]For some,
- [00:04:46.290]you will have a specific course that you need to take
- [00:04:49.664]to fulfill that requirement.
- [00:04:52.350]In other categories, like ACE 5: Humanities,
- [00:04:55.560]you'll have a lot of choices.
- [00:04:57.600]This is something to talk to your advisor about
- [00:05:00.660]or ask some upperclassmen,
- [00:05:02.160]they always have great tips about courses that they enjoyed.
- [00:05:08.130]The biggest part of your degree are your major requirements.
- [00:05:12.750]Every degree
- [00:05:13.860]and every degree and department has different requirements.
- [00:05:17.670]In the school,
- [00:05:18.750]or excuse me, in the College of Fine and Performing Arts,
- [00:05:21.840]our majors have both core,
- [00:05:24.330]which is something that everyone in the major takes,
- [00:05:26.520]for example, theory, history,
- [00:05:28.890]and they have options,
- [00:05:30.390]you might think of those as specializations.
- [00:05:33.390]That is where you focus in on your specific interests
- [00:05:36.480]within the major.
- [00:05:40.260]The next part of your degree is what's called the minor,
- [00:05:43.380]minor requirements.
- [00:05:45.300]If you have any of the degrees listed on the screen,
- [00:05:47.880]the BA degrees,
- [00:05:49.440]you will be required to do a minor.
- [00:05:52.380]If you have a BFA, a BM, or a BME,
- [00:05:57.180]you're always welcome to add a minor to your program.
- [00:06:00.540]We just wanna make sure that you know
- [00:06:02.190]that it may take you longer than four years
- [00:06:04.350]to finish your requirements.
- [00:06:09.215]And the last requirement for our college
- [00:06:11.640]is a foreign language requirement.
- [00:06:14.280]If you are doing a BA or a BM,
- [00:06:17.700]we do have a language requirement for you.
- [00:06:20.460]This is a perfect topic
- [00:06:21.780]to talk to your academic advisor about.
- [00:06:24.540]What you had in high school,
- [00:06:25.830]what you still need here at the university.
- [00:06:28.560]If you haven't had any, don't panic,
- [00:06:30.510]we have so many degrees to choose,
- [00:06:32.850]or excuse me, languages to choose from
- [00:06:36.000]that you can start from the beginning
- [00:06:37.410]at any of those languages.
- [00:06:38.910]If you're partway through,
- [00:06:40.350]we'll want you to take an exam
- [00:06:41.760]to make sure that you start in the right place
- [00:06:44.460]'cause we don't want you to get yourself
- [00:06:46.260]in a situation where you're in over your head.
- [00:06:51.810]Now that we've talked about all the things
- [00:06:53.700]that you are required,
- [00:06:55.260]you may have a few hours left
- [00:06:57.870]before you get to the university's 120-credit-hour minimum
- [00:07:02.850]to graduate.
- [00:07:03.990]Every degree requires that.
- [00:07:06.120]So if you still have requirements,
- [00:07:08.040]or excuse me, credit hours left available,
- [00:07:10.740]then those are what we call electives.
- [00:07:13.140]You can see on the screen the average number of electives
- [00:07:15.780]that our different degree programs
- [00:07:17.610]typically provide students.
- [00:07:20.820]You can take anything you want for electives,
- [00:07:23.610]but we would encourage you to be a little bit strategic
- [00:07:26.760]by choosing a second major,
- [00:07:28.860]any courses in your major that aren't required,
- [00:07:31.380]but sound interesting to you,
- [00:07:33.270]a study abroad experience,
- [00:07:35.220]or anything else that you enjoy.
- [00:07:41.730]The last thing about your degree that I want you to know
- [00:07:44.760]is about the grade requirements for our college.
- [00:07:50.250]All of your major courses may not be taken
- [00:07:52.680]for pass or no pass.
- [00:07:54.180]In other words, you need a letter grade
- [00:07:56.340]and that letter grade has to be a C or better.
- [00:08:00.210]If you don't get a C or better,
- [00:08:01.770]we will require you to retake the course.
- [00:08:05.730]Students must also maintain a minimum
- [00:08:08.070]and current cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or C average
- [00:08:11.760]to be in good standing at the university.
- [00:08:14.520]If for some reason that you don't hit this threshold,
- [00:08:17.400]don't panic,
- [00:08:18.600]you'll be put on academic probation
- [00:08:20.610]and we're gonna help you get back on track.
- [00:08:22.800]That's what the Student Success Team is for,
- [00:08:25.110]including your academic advisor.
- [00:08:28.230]The sooner you know that you're struggling,
- [00:08:30.570]the better it is to ask for help
- [00:08:32.670]because that's when we have the most options to help you,
- [00:08:36.270]make changes in your schedule,
- [00:08:37.920]find tutors, other academic resources,
- [00:08:40.440]or maybe just deal
- [00:08:41.273]with some personal things going on in your life
- [00:08:43.080]that are impacting your academic performance.
- [00:08:45.930]Again, don't panic,
- [00:08:47.280]reach out for help.
- [00:08:48.390]There's no such thing as a bad question,
- [00:08:50.730]except for the one that you fail to ask.
- [00:08:56.460]So I just told you a lot about requirements
- [00:08:58.800]in a short period of time.
- [00:09:01.050]If you are wondering
- [00:09:02.100]where all of these requirements are listed,
- [00:09:04.200]they're in an online resource
- [00:09:06.420]called the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:09:08.760]It's published annually,
- [00:09:10.470]it includes all of the courses, their descriptions,
- [00:09:13.740]and their prerequisites.
- [00:09:15.360]Prerequisites is a word that we use
- [00:09:17.970]to describe anything that you have to do
- [00:09:20.310]before you can take a class.
- [00:09:22.290]A common example is you can't take English II
- [00:09:25.560]until you've had English I.
- [00:09:27.990]Sometimes prerequisites are things like must be a junior
- [00:09:32.190]or must be a particular major.
- [00:09:34.620]You'll find all of those in the catalog.
- [00:09:37.560]There's also sample four-year plans,
- [00:09:40.140]all of the degree requirements that I just listed out,
- [00:09:42.810]the different major components,
- [00:09:45.000]and the criteria for earning honors
- [00:09:47.130]if that's something that you're interested in.
- [00:09:49.800]On the screen, you can see a little sample
- [00:09:51.930]of what that website looks like.
- [00:09:54.210]Our college is at the bottom corner
- [00:09:56.640]with the dancers on the screen.
- [00:09:59.070]If you're thinking about doing a minor in another college,
- [00:10:02.520]you can explore those in the catalog as well.
- [00:10:06.690]You can also look at courses
- [00:10:08.130]that you're trying to decide between for your ACEs.
- [00:10:12.870]Again, those are your Gen Eds.
- [00:10:17.700]Just as an example, once we go into the catalog,
- [00:10:20.700]I wanted you to see what it looks like.
- [00:10:22.770]This first page is from the college of,
- [00:10:25.020]or excuse me, the School of Music and the major of music.
- [00:10:28.380]You can see that across the top,
- [00:10:30.960]it lists different tabs,
- [00:10:32.910]major, minor, courses,
- [00:10:35.670]four-year plans,
- [00:10:36.660]and career development related to the major.
- [00:10:39.540]You'll see a description of the major,
- [00:10:41.700]and if you scroll down,
- [00:10:43.350]you can see the big sections
- [00:10:46.230]that I was telling you about earlier,
- [00:10:47.850]like ACE requirements, the language requirements,
- [00:10:51.060]the major, minor, et cetera.
- [00:10:53.490]Over on the top right corner, there's quick points.
- [00:10:56.580]Think of this as your compass.
- [00:10:57.990]This will tell you where you are
- [00:11:00.690]when you're on various pages.
- [00:11:03.000]So you can see
- [00:11:03.833]that we are in the College of Fine and Performing Arts.
- [00:11:06.390]You can get a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
- [00:11:11.670]It's 120 hours to graduate.
- [00:11:13.890]What the minimum GPA is
- [00:11:15.840]and who the advisor is.
- [00:11:18.630]The person listed here is the lead advisor for the major,
- [00:11:21.990]not necessarily who you've been assigned to
- [00:11:24.300]as your major advisor.
- [00:11:27.390]The screen is also now showing a graphic design example
- [00:11:30.570]with the four-year plans
- [00:11:32.970]so that you can kind of look at how it's laid out
- [00:11:35.490]for different degrees.
- [00:11:37.080]If you have any dual enrollment or AP credit,
- [00:11:43.530]this will be different for you.
- [00:11:44.910]And if you've added a different major or minor,
- [00:11:46.830]those will be different for you as well,
- [00:11:48.750]but it's just a sample so that you can kind of see
- [00:11:51.480]what each semester will look like.
- [00:11:53.850]Anything red, you can click into.
- [00:11:56.040]So these red numbers along the left, under Term 1,
- [00:12:00.030]those are different courses,
- [00:12:01.380]four-letter codes and numbers for each course.
- [00:12:04.830]You can see what the course is about,
- [00:12:06.330]and again, those prerequisites.
- [00:12:12.270]All of the degree requirements
- [00:12:14.670]and expectations for students are outlined by the registrar.
- [00:12:20.640]Their website is a really good resource for you
- [00:12:23.820]as you go through your time at UNL.
- [00:12:26.970]On their website, you'll find the academic calendar,
- [00:12:29.760]so when are your breaks, add, drop,
- [00:12:32.100]and refund deadlines for courses.
- [00:12:34.860]Anything important you need to know related to academics
- [00:12:37.590]will be on the calendar.
- [00:12:39.930]There's also what's called priority registration dates.
- [00:12:43.440]Priority registration is the term that we use
- [00:12:45.930]when it's time to enroll for the following semester.
- [00:12:49.320]The sooner you enroll when your window opens,
- [00:12:52.590]the sooner or the better chance you'll have
- [00:12:54.660]at getting the classes and schedule that you want,
- [00:12:56.970]so pay attention to those priority registration dates
- [00:12:59.760]for yourself.
- [00:13:01.800]Also you'll find grading policies,
- [00:13:03.630]pass/no pass rules,
- [00:13:05.430]and the final exam schedule.
- [00:13:07.650]When you're in college,
- [00:13:08.700]you don't go to all of your classes
- [00:13:10.320]typically during finals week,
- [00:13:12.780]you just go one time to take your exam,
- [00:13:14.730]and you'll wanna make sure that you're there
- [00:13:16.110]on the right day and time.
- [00:13:18.060]And finally, the registrar's website has tutorials
- [00:13:20.970]for all of our student information systems.
- [00:13:23.700]I'm gonna show you a couple of examples
- [00:13:25.560]of these student information systems,
- [00:13:27.570]but just remember, you can always go back to the registrar
- [00:13:30.510]to look at their website
- [00:13:32.700]for step-by-step videos of how to use these.
- [00:13:37.860]The first one is called the Degree Planner.
- [00:13:40.650]It's exactly what it sounds like it is,
- [00:13:42.600]it's to help you plan out your degree.
- [00:13:45.930]Over on the right, you'll see a sample
- [00:13:47.790]of what a graphic design plan could look like
- [00:13:50.310]for a particular student.
- [00:13:52.920]This is only a planning tool
- [00:13:55.740]and it will evolve as you make plans
- [00:13:58.080]and take different classes,
- [00:13:59.280]and maybe your interest and goals evolve
- [00:14:01.860]as you go through your time at UNL.
- [00:14:05.700]We recommend that you start with a sample plan
- [00:14:07.980]and then start moving things around.
- [00:14:10.050]That's gonna be the easiest
- [00:14:11.250]rather than inputting everything from the beginning.
- [00:14:15.690]The next tool we have is the Degree Audit.
- [00:14:18.930]The Degree Audit system is where you get to actually see
- [00:14:22.920]all of your requirements
- [00:14:24.390]and see them checked off in little boxes.
- [00:14:27.390]You'll access the Degree Audit through your MyRED.
- [00:14:31.890]If you look over to the right,
- [00:14:33.810]up on the top, you'll see a pie graph.
- [00:14:35.940]This shows you how many hours you have to finish.
- [00:14:40.290]Green is already done, blue is in progress,
- [00:14:42.900]and red is needs to be done.
- [00:14:45.300]The vertical bar is your GPA.
- [00:14:47.880]The horizontal bars are those major components
- [00:14:50.940]of your degree.
- [00:14:51.773]So what's highlighted is the ACEs,
- [00:14:53.490]so you can see this sample student
- [00:14:55.410]is about 2/3 or 3/4 away finished through their ACEs.
- [00:14:59.370]And you can always click on these to jump down
- [00:15:01.740]and see the specific requirements.
- [00:15:05.490]Looking at the bottom of the screen,
- [00:15:07.740]all the requirements are spelled out for you one by one.
- [00:15:11.910]Again, green is done, red is needs to be done,
- [00:15:15.300]and if you see any blue,
- [00:15:16.350]that's what you're currently doing.
- [00:15:18.330]You can expand out the requirements
- [00:15:21.060]by pushing the little sideways caret
- [00:15:24.210]to see exactly what courses you need
- [00:15:26.220]to fulfill the requirement listed.
- [00:15:29.010]This is a really neat tool
- [00:15:30.360]if you like to see how your progress is going.
- [00:15:34.290]You'll also wanna check it if you have any transfer credit
- [00:15:37.590]or courses that are being substituted for something else
- [00:15:40.350]and make sure that they show up in this audit correctly.
- [00:15:43.710]If not, talk to your academic advisor.
- [00:15:48.930]So now that we've talked about your degree
- [00:15:50.820]and all the requirements very briefly, very quickly,
- [00:15:54.510]I want to tell you a little bit about a federal law
- [00:15:57.510]that protects your rights as a student and your privacy,
- [00:16:01.110]it's called FERPA.
- [00:16:02.820]This was in place
- [00:16:03.750]when you were in elementary and high school,
- [00:16:05.940]but the rules are a little bit different now in college.
- [00:16:10.020]What FERPA mandates
- [00:16:11.460]is that no one at the university can share your records
- [00:16:15.030]or your academic information without your permission.
- [00:16:18.720]So if you want to share your grades or your finances,
- [00:16:23.610]your scholarship information with a parent
- [00:16:25.740]or somebody else who's helping you with college,
- [00:16:28.260]then you'll need to go into your MyRED account
- [00:16:30.960]and set up guest access for that individual.
- [00:16:34.470]And you can decide they can have access to everything
- [00:16:37.350]or just this and that.
- [00:16:38.580]Different people can have different levels of access
- [00:16:41.220]and you can change it at any time
- [00:16:43.230]based on what your needs are
- [00:16:45.027]and the relationships that you have
- [00:16:46.800]with people who are helping you.
- [00:16:48.840]So if somebody's helping you pay your bill
- [00:16:51.180]or your parents are just curious
- [00:16:53.220]how you're doing in college,
- [00:16:55.230]we can't talk to them unless we have this access.
- [00:16:58.260]And so if you anticipate that being a situation
- [00:17:01.590]that a parent is gonna call the Financial Aid Office
- [00:17:04.620]or wanna talk to your advisor,
- [00:17:07.050]make sure that we have this access in place
- [00:17:08.910]or otherwise we won't be able to.
- [00:17:13.770]Switching gears a little bit,
- [00:17:15.270]I wanna talk to you a little bit
- [00:17:16.680]about some of the resources that we have on campus.
- [00:17:19.560]And you're going to hear about a lot of these
- [00:17:21.600]throughout your new student enrollment experience,
- [00:17:24.480]but these are some that we like to highlight
- [00:17:26.190]for our students particularly.
- [00:17:28.650]The first one is Career Services.
- [00:17:31.530]Career Services is there for you
- [00:17:33.360]throughout your college degree
- [00:17:34.920]as you think about part-time jobs, internships,
- [00:17:38.070]and employment or graduate school after college.
- [00:17:41.070]We're really excited
- [00:17:42.210]that in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts,
- [00:17:45.090]we're gonna have our own career specialist soon
- [00:17:48.180]who'll be able to help you along your way.
- [00:17:50.730]The main Career Services Office, though, is a great resource
- [00:17:53.940]and it's located in the Nebraska Union.
- [00:17:57.720]The next resource is the Husker Hub.
- [00:18:00.060]This is the one-stop shop
- [00:18:01.680]for anything related to your enrollment or finances,
- [00:18:04.530]your student account or scholarships.
- [00:18:06.780]You'll wanna talk to the Husker Hub
- [00:18:08.430]if you have any questions
- [00:18:09.840]because your academic advisor cannot see
- [00:18:12.390]your financial records or your scholarships.
- [00:18:15.600]The Husker Hub is somewhere that you'll also wanna call
- [00:18:18.090]if you ever think about switching your schedule
- [00:18:20.700]because you don't wanna mess up your financial aid
- [00:18:22.650]or scholarships based on changing your schedule.
- [00:18:27.060]The next office listed is CAST.
- [00:18:30.570]They're an office who helps with transition to college,
- [00:18:34.470]figuring out what you need to know,
- [00:18:36.000]that's different than high school, right?
- [00:18:37.860]So maybe you have a little,
- [00:18:40.230]didn't have to study much in high school,
- [00:18:41.880]but you do now,
- [00:18:42.780]they can help you with that.
- [00:18:44.340]Maybe time management is a struggle.
- [00:18:46.860]Any kind of success in the classroom,
- [00:18:49.680]that's what the CAST office is for.
- [00:18:51.660]Plus, they're just great advocates.
- [00:18:53.040]If you aren't sure who else to ask,
- [00:18:54.600]you can always talk to the CAST office.
- [00:18:57.810]Next is CAPS.
- [00:18:59.220]You can tell we really like acronyms.
- [00:19:01.050]The Counseling and Psychological Services Department,
- [00:19:03.840]they're located in the Student Health Center.
- [00:19:06.330]It's a free and confidential resource for students.
- [00:19:09.360]With no matter what kind of struggles that you're having,
- [00:19:12.690]whether it's stress, homesickness,
- [00:19:15.360]anything going on in your life
- [00:19:16.770]that's impacting you and your ability to be successful,
- [00:19:19.500]CAPS can help you work through that.
- [00:19:21.870]Next is the Services for Students with Disabilities office,
- [00:19:26.580]or SSD.
- [00:19:28.230]If you had a 504 or an IEP in high school,
- [00:19:32.460]or maybe you never had accommodations,
- [00:19:34.680]but you feel like maybe you need them now,
- [00:19:37.230]go to the SSD office and they can help you with that
- [00:19:40.020]for the college setting.
- [00:19:41.760]Unlike high school,
- [00:19:42.630]those accommodations don't happen automatically.
- [00:19:45.600]You are responsible
- [00:19:46.560]for bringing your paperwork from high school
- [00:19:48.540]or your assessments from a mental health provider
- [00:19:51.810]or a physician to get those accommodations in place.
- [00:19:57.330]Next is the University Health Center.
- [00:19:59.700]It's a one-stop shop for anything related to your physical
- [00:20:02.790]or mental wellness.
- [00:20:05.640]Located in the Student Health Center is CAPS,
- [00:20:08.220]like I already mentioned.
- [00:20:09.720]Also, Big Red Resilience,
- [00:20:11.430]which is a place where they have a pantry.
- [00:20:14.370]It's a lot larger than the pantry
- [00:20:16.020]that we have in the Student Success Center,
- [00:20:17.790]and you can order online
- [00:20:19.110]and then pick up food for free
- [00:20:21.150]if you are struggling with having the groceries
- [00:20:23.550]or food that you need in your life.
- [00:20:26.850]Also, there's a medical clinic, a pharmacy,
- [00:20:30.390]physical therapy,
- [00:20:32.460]all located in the Student Health Center.
- [00:20:34.260]And you're already paying for a lot of those services,
- [00:20:37.050]so check out their website,
- [00:20:38.550]see what you're already paying for
- [00:20:39.780]and make sure that you take advantage of those resources
- [00:20:43.200]in the Student Health Center.
- [00:20:45.330]I already mentioned Big Red Resilience
- [00:20:46.770]and Well-being located in the Health Center.
- [00:20:48.930]Again, that's the home of the Husker Pantry
- [00:20:51.330]and is a great resource for students
- [00:20:53.820]and a partner of ours with our pantry in FPA.
- [00:20:58.470]The next four listed,
- [00:21:00.060]OASIS, the Women's Center,
- [00:21:01.560]the LGBTQA+ Center,
- [00:21:03.870]and Military and Veteran's Success Center,
- [00:21:06.270]are all places on campus that you can go for support
- [00:21:09.780]and/or to find your people.
- [00:21:12.030]These centers have professional staff,
- [00:21:14.790]a lot of students who have similar interests,
- [00:21:18.331]and other resources for you.
- [00:21:20.040]Plus, they all put on a lot of cool programs
- [00:21:22.110]throughout the year that you can attend.
- [00:21:24.450]You don't have to sign up
- [00:21:25.650]and be officially a part of any particular group
- [00:21:28.320]to attend their events,
- [00:21:30.000]so definitely check that out.
- [00:21:32.190]And then don't forget about the Student Success Center,
- [00:21:35.220]that is where my office is located,
- [00:21:36.990]and also our academic navigator, Sara Troupe,
- [00:21:40.140]is located there,
- [00:21:41.070]and Sara's also around
- [00:21:42.420]to help you with any personal academic struggles
- [00:21:44.940]that you may be having,
- [00:21:47.160]so definitely come visit us as well.
- [00:21:52.410]As a student,
- [00:21:53.640]we try to put everything you need in one place online,
- [00:21:56.580]and that's my.unl.edu,
- [00:21:59.130]and that website example is right on the screen for you now.
- [00:22:03.270]I wanna highlight a few of the different boxes
- [00:22:05.430]so you know what they are.
- [00:22:07.140]The big gray box across the top is Canvas,
- [00:22:10.170]that is your academic portal.
- [00:22:12.150]So if a professor says,
- [00:22:13.440]my syllabus is online,
- [00:22:15.420]or upload your paper online,
- [00:22:17.700]they mean in your Canvas.
- [00:22:19.560]So you'll definitely want to check that out
- [00:22:22.620]so that you can be on top of all of your courses
- [00:22:26.040]and communicate with your faculty members as you need to.
- [00:22:29.250]In the middle, the orange-ish color box is MyRED.
- [00:22:33.990]That is your hub for university business,
- [00:22:36.360]your enrollment, your financial aid,
- [00:22:40.230]anything related to your student account.
- [00:22:42.180]That's also, remember, where you put in your FERPA access
- [00:22:44.910]if you have folks that you want to have access
- [00:22:47.490]to your records or your information.
- [00:22:50.790]In the middle, the other gray box, Student Success Hub,
- [00:22:53.820]this is where you go to make appointments
- [00:22:55.500]with your academic advisor, the career coach,
- [00:22:58.410]or Sara Troupe, our academic navigator.
- [00:23:01.500]You can go in and see right when they're available
- [00:23:03.660]and make your appointments really easy through that system.
- [00:23:07.590]Over to the left, the yellow box is your Husker email.
- [00:23:11.670]You'll wanna make sure
- [00:23:12.510]and check that email account every day.
- [00:23:15.900]It's the only way the university is gonna communicate
- [00:23:18.420]with you about almost everything.
- [00:23:20.640]We don't send many letters home anymore.
- [00:23:23.550]You'll also wanna check your email
- [00:23:25.230]for fun things going on on campus.
- [00:23:27.270]Just spot-check it at least once a day
- [00:23:29.130]to make sure you're on top of things.
- [00:23:31.350]Below that is the libraries in the brownish box.
- [00:23:33.960]MyWorld is about study abroad.
- [00:23:36.690]And then flipping over to the far right side,
- [00:23:39.570]the greenish box is Handshake.
- [00:23:41.250]So if you wanna find a job on campus
- [00:23:43.590]or in the community or an internship,
- [00:23:46.410]those are all located in Handshake.
- [00:23:48.420]And then the pink box, Nvolve-U,
- [00:23:50.550]is where you can find out about student organizations,
- [00:23:53.520]ways to get involved on campus.
- [00:23:56.130]It's a lot, all in one place.
- [00:24:00.990]Speaking of getting involved,
- [00:24:02.610]I wanna make sure you know
- [00:24:03.960]about all of the student organizations
- [00:24:06.510]that you can be a part of.
- [00:24:08.520]It may seem a little overwhelming
- [00:24:10.380]because there are literally hundreds of them,
- [00:24:13.350]but my challenge to you is to find at least one thing
- [00:24:16.380]to be involved in.
- [00:24:17.880]It can be in our college,
- [00:24:19.200]we have a lot of great student organizations.
- [00:24:21.750]It could be a social organization like Greek life,
- [00:24:25.020]a spiritual or religious organization, intramural sports.
- [00:24:29.190]Really, the sky's the limit.
- [00:24:30.840]Just find one thing so that you can make connections
- [00:24:33.750]and have fun while you're in school.
- [00:24:36.810]We also have a lot of ensembles
- [00:24:38.640]that students can be a part of in our college,
- [00:24:40.740]and you don't have to be a music major to be a part of them,
- [00:24:43.560]both vocal and instrumental ensembles.
- [00:24:46.830]So if you have questions about that,
- [00:24:48.450]you can reach out to me,
- [00:24:49.770]or Sara Troupe, our academic navigator,
- [00:24:52.800]or your academic advisor,
- [00:24:54.060]and we can help you get connected to the ensembles
- [00:24:56.670]and auditions if that's applicable to those.
- [00:25:00.780]We have a lot of opportunities
- [00:25:02.520]for you to go abroad with our faculty,
- [00:25:04.680]faculty-led tours.
- [00:25:06.450]I used to always think that studying abroad
- [00:25:08.550]meant being gone for a year,
- [00:25:10.470]but what I know now is that you can be gone
- [00:25:12.840]for just a short period of time,
- [00:25:15.000]like spring break, a couple weeks in May,
- [00:25:18.000]one semester or two semesters, or a summer.
- [00:25:21.390]There's so many options,
- [00:25:22.470]so check out that if you're interested.
- [00:25:25.260]We have a student advisory board.
- [00:25:27.630]These students represent you as students
- [00:25:30.000]and it's something that you could be a part of too
- [00:25:32.220]once you get here on campus.
- [00:25:35.220]We have really cool community organizations
- [00:25:38.610]that are our affiliates,
- [00:25:40.170]including the Lied Center for Performing Arts,
- [00:25:42.780]which you get a free ticket by being a FPA student,
- [00:25:46.920]and you can get half-price tickets
- [00:25:48.360]just by being a UNL student
- [00:25:50.040]through the Arts for All program,
- [00:25:52.050]so take advantage of that resource.
- [00:25:54.540]The Sheldon Museum of Art is free.
- [00:25:57.330]The Mary Riepma Ross Media Art Center and the Nebraska Rep
- [00:26:01.650]have really good shows throughout the year
- [00:26:04.620]and you should definitely take advantage of all of that
- [00:26:07.140]happening right within our Arts Quad on campus.
- [00:26:11.820]And then finally,
- [00:26:13.020]we have really cool artists and scholars
- [00:26:15.540]that come to campus to do master classes,
- [00:26:17.760]to work with our students,
- [00:26:19.740]gallery exhibits,
- [00:26:21.540]those sort of things that you just don't get to have
- [00:26:23.760]that kind of access any other place
- [00:26:26.100]than here at FPA, at UNL.
- [00:26:31.080]As we wrap up our time together,
- [00:26:32.580]I wanna summarize just a few things
- [00:26:34.770]that I think are important for you to be successful.
- [00:26:38.940]First, please, please, please,
- [00:26:41.010]check your Husker email account daily.
- [00:26:44.100]Second, plug in somewhere.
- [00:26:46.080]Take advantage of the opportunities,
- [00:26:47.940]find at least one thing outside of class to get involved in
- [00:26:51.120]so that we make sure and you make sure that you have friends
- [00:26:54.660]and that college is the best experience it can be.
- [00:26:58.290]And finally, don't be afraid to ask for help.
- [00:27:01.560]No one knows everything and we've all been there before.
- [00:27:04.710]There's no such thing as a dumb question,
- [00:27:06.600]so ask for help anytime that you need it.
- [00:27:14.980]I got ahead of myself.
- [00:27:19.590]We're using social media to post a lot of opportunities,
- [00:27:23.250]so make sure that you follow @UNLArts on Instagram
- [00:27:29.880]and Twitter, wherever you use your social media.
- [00:27:33.720]This resource site is for the new student enrollment
