[00:00:20.815]says they were harvesting peppermint on Oct. 9.
[00:00:24.112]So, they were getting another cut on
[00:00:27.207]peppermint this time of the year.
[00:00:29.802]So we have a Nebraska Department of Ag
[00:00:34.252]funded peppermint and spearmint fertility
[00:00:38.190]trial going on for the second year.
[00:00:40.861]Maharjan says they are looking at various
[00:00:43.075]growing aspects with mint to make it
[00:00:45.040]profitable for growers.
[00:00:47.620]What we’ve been looking at is two varieties of
[00:00:50.940]the mint and, on top of that, trying
[00:00:55.040]to come up with the best fertilizer management practice
[00:00:58.676]for the mint in the valley.
[00:00:59.869]So, basically, the experimental design
[00:01:03.138]includes peppermint, spearmint, and
[00:01:05.734]each of that mint variety has
[00:01:07.517]several fertilizer regimes. Different
[00:01:11.159]rates of nitrogen, different sources of
[00:01:14.991]nitrogen fertilizers. So trying to access
[00:01:18.028]whats the best way to manage nitrogen from
[00:01:21.878]mint in our area to get the optimal production.
[00:01:26.860]So far, the mint plots perform well with
[00:01:29.030]nitrogen fertilizer applications, but it
[00:01:31.355]will take a few more years of growing mint
[00:01:33.026]to get definite answers for growers on
[00:01:35.507]the optimal rates.
[00:01:36.745]Maharjan says he has been working closely
[00:01:39.393]with Dr. Dipak Santra on the mint project,
[00:01:42.028]and they appreciate support from
[00:01:43.862]the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.
