[00:00:05.130]Prisons are one of the most closed systems that we have,
[00:00:08.520]one of the most opaque systems.
[00:00:10.020]It's often difficult to know what's going on
[00:00:12.210]inside of them, and lawsuits are one primary way
[00:00:15.450]that incarcerated people shed light
[00:00:17.550]for us in the public on what's happening inside.
[00:00:20.430]So my research focuses on primarily the ways
[00:00:23.550]in which federal courts oversee
[00:00:25.530]and regulate the prison system throughout the country
[00:00:28.140]and particularly the way that they enforce
[00:00:30.138]or fail to enforce the constitutional protections
[00:00:33.540]that incarcerated people have.

[00:00:44.790]So I look at primarily cases that incarcerated people bring
[00:00:48.690]in the federal court system to enforce their rights
[00:00:52.110]and then track and analyze the ways
[00:00:54.630]in which the courts are interpreting those rights
[00:00:57.210]applying those rights, and enforcing those rights
[00:00:59.340]as against prison systems and prison employees.

[00:01:14.220]I hope that my research will help to alleviate some
[00:01:18.270]of the harms that prisons inflict
[00:01:20.040]on people who are incarcerated inside
[00:01:21.720]of them and the communities that those people come from.
[00:01:24.690]I hope that my research will help to expand
[00:01:27.750]and ensure greater constitutional protections
[00:01:30.360]for the people who are inside and shed some light
[00:01:32.640]on the conditions in prisons and jails across the country.
[00:01:36.570]Being at Nebraska Law is beneficial
[00:01:38.340]for my research because of the law school's commitment
[00:01:40.680]to the public interest and doing good and advancing justice.

[00:01:46.860]by the way it treats its prisoners.
[00:01:48.540]This is a local issue, it's a national issue
[00:01:51.030]and it's a global issue, and it matters.
