Description
Across Nebraska school districts are sowing the seeds of healthy living by connecting students to their food through farm-to-school programs. These programs go beyond traditional chalk-and-talk education. Instead they give students hands-on experiences that teach them about nutrition, where their food comes from, and what it tastes like. The mantra that many schools use for their programs is: cafeteria, classroom and community.

- [00:00:23.550]Across Nebraska school districts are
- [00:00:25.590]sowing the seeds of healthy living
- [00:00:27.270]by connecting students to their food
- [00:00:29.220]through farm to school programs.
- [00:00:31.050]They give students hands-on experiences that teach them
- [00:00:33.900]about nutrition, where their food comes from
- [00:00:36.540]and what it tastes like.
- [00:00:38.520]Ultimately, we want them to eat a variety of healthy foods
- [00:00:43.620]and if they're exposed to them in school,
- [00:00:47.490]I think that's a great start to, you know,
- [00:00:50.250]building good nutrition throughout their life cycle.
- [00:00:52.950]The mantra that many schools use
- [00:00:54.480]for their programs is cafeteria, classroom and community.
- [00:00:58.917]And so that's where we come into play.
- [00:01:00.630]We're like, we need to educate these kids on what this is.
- [00:01:03.810]So when they go out into the world on their own,
- [00:01:06.630]they can go to the grocery store and say,
- [00:01:08.017]"Yes, I recognize that.
- [00:01:09.450]I know what that is, and I know how that's going to taste
- [00:01:11.743]and I know how that's beneficial for me."
- [00:01:14.760]The cafeteria is where most students
- [00:01:16.620]experience healthy foods, but many schools bring nutrition
- [00:01:20.370]and local foods directly into the classroom
- [00:01:23.190]either from visits from local farmers and producers
- [00:01:26.370]or growing produce right inside the classroom itself.
- [00:01:30.030]Some schools even take their students
- [00:01:31.640]to the farms to get their hands in the dirt.
- [00:01:34.050]You know, how can we impact the future?
- [00:01:35.700]Well, we can impact that by, you know, making kids aware
- [00:01:39.750]of the importance of food and all the issues surrounding it
- [00:01:43.470]and then those kids will grow up to be,
- [00:01:45.630]you know, informed adults.
- [00:01:47.400]Farm to school programs
- [00:01:48.540]cultivate economic growth in communities,
- [00:01:50.970]boosting the livelihoods of hardworking farmers,
- [00:01:53.760]stimulating local economies
- [00:01:55.800]and strengthening community bonds.
- [00:01:58.200]I like the momentum of that,
- [00:01:59.640]and it just gives you some assurance to
- [00:02:01.500]know that I can put a big crop in
- [00:02:03.270]and I know a big chunk of it's got a home, you know,
- [00:02:05.310]early on in the year as you're planning for stuff like that.
- [00:02:07.410]So that's probably the biggest benefit
- [00:02:09.210]for a lot of that on there, for our side of it at least.
- [00:02:12.450]From the classroom to the community,
- [00:02:14.190]farm to school programs nurture a culture of health
- [00:02:16.890]and sustainability that reaches beyond school walls.
- [00:02:20.640]They're creating healthier eating habits, fostering pride
- [00:02:23.850]in locally sourced food, and laying the groundwork
- [00:02:26.940]for a stronger, more connected Nebraska.
- [00:02:29.670]This is an exciting time for farm to school in Nebraska.
- [00:02:33.690]A couple years ago, the legislature
- [00:02:35.820]established an official farm to school coordinator position
- [00:02:39.660]at the state level
- [00:02:40.740]and so that's being governed through the Department of Ed.
- [00:02:45.398]If you're starting, if you've got a belly full
- [00:02:48.390]of good, nutritious food
- [00:02:50.190]as opposed to junk food or you know,
- [00:02:53.718]high sodium, whatever it may be, that makes a difference
- [00:02:56.670]as to how those students perform in the classroom too
- [00:02:58.920]and on the athletic field, et cetera, et cetera.
- [00:03:02.670]You know, the farmers produce
- [00:03:03.990]and then we consume, but when we're consuming locally,
- [00:03:07.350]we're helping our own local economy
- [00:03:09.810]and our local farmers, and it's kind of that full circle
- [00:03:12.360]of how we can benefit each other within our own community.
