[00:00:05.850]So my work is what we call geek couture.
[00:00:09.300]And so geek couture takes these popular culture fandoms,
[00:00:14.250]media, what have you, and translates that into fashion.
[00:00:19.293]It's not cosplay, so we're not recreating any costumes
[00:00:23.880]or anything like that.
[00:00:25.050]It's about translating the fandom or the media
[00:00:29.250]into something that's wearable for day-to-day wear.

[00:00:40.110]For this project, I did focus in on Star Wars
[00:00:43.380]because one, it's an important fandom to me,
[00:00:46.890]but two, because it's something
[00:00:48.510]that's really accessible to a lot of people.
[00:00:51.300]Even if you haven't seen Star Wars,
[00:00:53.790]or you're not like a Star Wars fan,
[00:00:55.710]you still know what it is.
[00:00:57.000]Renee weaves pop culture into her designs
[00:00:59.460]to challenge the idea of who can be a geek.
[00:01:02.370]We've spent so much time thinking of geek
[00:01:05.580]as like this kind of white male phenomenon,
[00:01:09.000]and that's what the literature tells us,
[00:01:11.910]that's what media shows us.
[00:01:14.760]But that's just not really what's really happening
[00:01:18.360]on the ground anymore.
[00:01:19.380]And so it's about creating those connections
[00:01:22.740]through that experience of like somebody seeing
[00:01:26.640]what you're wearing and being like, oh, I recognize that,
[00:01:29.640]or oh my gosh, I'm a fan too.
[00:01:32.040]It's a secret little nod to each other.
[00:01:34.590]Renee hopes her work will inspire others
[00:01:36.750]to boldly go and celebrate their own personal geekiness.
[00:01:40.380]And so I had the opportunity to kind of take my work
[00:01:44.340]and show why this is important and how it can connect us,
[00:01:48.630]and kind of make fandom, and fan spaces,
[00:01:52.440]and fashion just a little more welcoming and geeky.
