- [00:00:00.150]It's Detachment 465 at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:02.880]Our mission here is dedicated to producing leaders
- [00:00:05.190]of character for tomorrow's Air Force and Space Force.
- [00:00:08.340]Here at Detachment 465,
- [00:00:09.870]we're developing skills, confidence,
- [00:00:11.760]and leadership abilities to prepare our cadets
- [00:00:13.800]to be second lieutenants.
- [00:00:15.240]So I would say there are three main reasons
- [00:00:17.430]why I joined Air Force ROTC.
- [00:00:19.710]The first being my dad was in the military,
- [00:00:22.470]so he kind of raised me on those values.
- [00:00:25.860]The second reason is the team aspect.
- [00:00:29.100]In ROTC, you're gonna have the chance to work with people,
- [00:00:32.280]develop relationships, learn how to lead,
- [00:00:34.770]and more importantly, learn how to follow.
- [00:00:37.050]Finally, I would say,
- [00:00:38.979]that you get a good financial opportunity in college.
- [00:00:44.520]We offer plenty of scholarships in Air Force ROTC.
- [00:00:48.060]I was offered a high school scholarship,
- [00:00:49.620]which paid for my full tuition.
- [00:00:52.020]So this past summer I got the opportunity
- [00:00:54.780]to go to field training.
- [00:00:56.430]It's a two week training camp
- [00:00:58.380]in Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
- [00:01:00.960]And I got to do a lot of really cool things.
- [00:01:03.330]I was put in a flight of 20 other kids
- [00:01:05.520]that I've never met before
- [00:01:07.200]and now we're all super close friends
- [00:01:08.820]and I have friends all over the country.
- [00:01:10.950]We got to do things like obstacle courses
- [00:01:13.197]and training scenarios.
- [00:01:15.210]So I actually wanna be a space operations officer
- [00:01:18.000]in the Space Force one day.
- [00:01:19.440]So this past summer, I got the opportunity to participate
- [00:01:22.560]in a summer immersion program with the Space Force.
- [00:01:25.500]And basically it was a week long training environment
- [00:01:28.830]where I got to participate in meetings
- [00:01:30.780]with all different sorts of space operation officers
- [00:01:33.810]and other people that work in the Space Force.
- [00:01:36.276]And they got to show me what their job looks like
- [00:01:39.150]and cool things they get to do on the daily basis.
- [00:01:41.490]And that was really cool to see as a cadet
- [00:01:44.400]that what my future could look like.
- [00:01:46.470]As for the professional skills,
- [00:01:48.870]that's something that a huge thing we touch on
- [00:01:51.480]because being able to present yourself
- [00:01:55.050]in a professional way is something
- [00:01:57.000]that's pertinent to the program
- [00:01:58.890]and something that we do work on throughout the years.
- [00:02:01.816]At the beginning I was just, you know,
- [00:02:03.960]some bratty high school student,
- [00:02:06.060]but now I'm able to present myself
- [00:02:08.280]in a way that makes everybody think that I'm professional.
- [00:02:12.150]So my favorite memory in ROTC is the same one every year.
- [00:02:15.690]It's always gotta be the Memorial Stadium
- [00:02:17.880]Stair Climb Workout.
- [00:02:19.350]This is a PT event we do every year
- [00:02:21.870]and remembrance of those that lost their lives on 911.
- [00:02:25.518]It's something that really resonates with me
- [00:02:28.620]because as we are the ones doing the workout,
- [00:02:31.500]so is the Army ROTC, so is the Navy ROTC,
- [00:02:35.160]and even first responders around the area.
- [00:02:37.740]Being a cadet to me means being a part
- [00:02:39.480]of something bigger than myself.
- [00:02:41.310]Being in this group where everybody's working
- [00:02:44.100]towards the same goal, the same mission,
- [00:02:45.930]it just means being together with like-minded people.
- [00:02:49.500]Air Force ROTC has given me more confidence
- [00:02:51.750]in my everyday life and my school life.
- [00:02:53.645]Nothing really phases me anymore.
- [00:02:55.680]If I'm throwing a curve ball,
- [00:02:56.700]I'm able to handle it no matter what.
- [00:02:58.590]My favorite opportunity that ROTC has given me
- [00:03:00.600]has been Air Force Ops.
- [00:03:02.040]I got to go to Little Rock Air Force Base.
- [00:03:04.440]It's where different cadets from different detachments
- [00:03:06.360]get to come from all over
- [00:03:07.740]and we get to learn the mission of the one base
- [00:03:09.600]and we get to see behind the scenes of everything.
- [00:03:12.690]The biggest misconception people have
- [00:03:14.400]about Air Force ROTC is it's not all about
- [00:03:18.360]marching and tactics.
- [00:03:20.460]In Air Force ROTC,
- [00:03:22.200]the main thing that we are pushing for
- [00:03:24.030]is to teach you how to become a leader.
- [00:03:26.820]You're going to be given those opportunities
- [00:03:28.560]as an upperclassmen and as an underclassmen.
- [00:03:30.920]Those upperclassmen are going to be working
- [00:03:33.420]directly with those underclassmen,
- [00:03:35.280]developing them as those underclassmen
- [00:03:37.230]learn those basic skills of leadership and followership.
