- [0:00] It's Detachment 465 at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [0:02] Our mission here is dedicated to producing leaders
- [0:05] of character for tomorrow's Air Force and Space Force.
- [0:08] Here at Detachment 465,
- [0:09] we're developing skills, confidence,
- [0:11] and leadership abilities to prepare our cadets
- [0:13] to be second lieutenants.
- [0:15] So I would say there are three main reasons
- [0:17] why I joined Air Force ROTC.
- [0:19] The first being my dad was in the military,
- [0:22] so he kind of raised me on those values.
- [0:25] The second reason is the team aspect.
- [0:29] In ROTC, you're gonna have the chance to work with people,
- [0:32] develop relationships, learn how to lead,
- [0:34] and more importantly, learn how to follow.
- [0:37] Finally, I would say,
- [0:38] that you get a good financial opportunity in college.
- [0:44] We offer plenty of scholarships in Air Force ROTC.
- [0:48] I was offered a high school scholarship,
- [0:49] which paid for my full tuition.
- [0:52] So this past summer I got the opportunity
- [0:54] to go to field training.
- [0:56] It's a two week training camp
- [0:58] in Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
- [1:00] And I got to do a lot of really cool things.
- [1:03] I was put in a flight of 20 other kids
- [1:05] that I've never met before
- [1:07] and now we're all super close friends
- [1:08] and I have friends all over the country.
- [1:10] We got to do things like obstacle courses
- [1:13] and training scenarios.
- [1:15] So I actually wanna be a space operations officer
- [1:18] in the Space Force one day.
- [1:19] So this past summer, I got the opportunity to participate
- [1:22] in a summer immersion program with the Space Force.
- [1:25] And basically it was a week long training environment
- [1:28] where I got to participate in meetings
- [1:30] with all different sorts of space operation officers
- [1:33] and other people that work in the Space Force.
- [1:36] And they got to show me what their job looks like
- [1:39] and cool things they get to do on the daily basis.
- [1:41] And that was really cool to see as a cadet
- [1:44] that what my future could look like.
- [1:46] As for the professional skills,
- [1:48] that's something that a huge thing we touch on
- [1:51] because being able to present yourself
- [1:55] in a professional way is something
- [1:57] that's pertinent to the program
- [1:58] and something that we do work on throughout the years.
- [2:01] At the beginning I was just, you know,
- [2:03] some bratty high school student,
- [2:06] but now I'm able to present myself
- [2:08] in a way that makes everybody think that I'm professional.
- [2:12] So my favorite memory in ROTC is the same one every year.
- [2:15] It's always gotta be the Memorial Stadium
- [2:17] Stair Climb Workout.
- [2:19] This is a PT event we do every year
- [2:21] and remembrance of those that lost their lives on 911.
- [2:25] It's something that really resonates with me
- [2:28] because as we are the ones doing the workout,
- [2:31] so is the Army ROTC, so is the Navy ROTC,
- [2:35] and even first responders around the area.
- [2:37] Being a cadet to me means being a part
- [2:39] of something bigger than myself.
- [2:41] Being in this group where everybody's working
- [2:44] towards the same goal, the same mission,
- [2:45] it just means being together with like-minded people.
- [2:49] Air Force ROTC has given me more confidence
- [2:51] in my everyday life and my school life.
- [2:53] Nothing really phases me anymore.
- [2:55] If I'm throwing a curve ball,
- [2:56] I'm able to handle it no matter what.
- [2:58] My favorite opportunity that ROTC has given me
- [3:00] has been Air Force Ops.
- [3:02] I got to go to Little Rock Air Force Base.
- [3:04] It's where different cadets from different detachments
- [3:06] get to come from all over
- [3:07] and we get to learn the mission of the one base
- [3:09] and we get to see behind the scenes of everything.
- [3:12] The biggest misconception people have
- [3:14] about Air Force ROTC is it's not all about
- [3:18] marching and tactics.
- [3:20] In Air Force ROTC,
- [3:22] the main thing that we are pushing for
- [3:24] is to teach you how to become a leader.
- [3:26] You're going to be given those opportunities
- [3:28] as an upperclassmen and as an underclassmen.
- [3:30] Those upperclassmen are going to be working
- [3:33] directly with those underclassmen,
- [3:35] developing them as those underclassmen
- [3:37] learn those basic skills of leadership and followership.
