[00:00:12.362]six rows by 20 ft long with different
[00:00:15.030]nitrogen applications. Bijesh Maharjan,

[00:00:23.800]beet study.
[00:00:25.355]And here we are evaluating
[00:00:27.437]the different nitrogen regimes in order to
[00:00:29.321]determine what the optimal nitrogen input
[00:00:32.904]for our sustainable and profitable beet
[00:00:35.784]production in the area. So far,
[00:00:38.242]we have learned quite a bit of things, but
[00:00:41.220]one which will really bring some changes in
[00:00:45.474]terms of profit for the growers, beet
[00:00:48.312]growers and also with the environmental benefits.
[00:00:52.124]Maharjan said until very recently the input
[00:00:54.402]of nitrogen was focused on beetroot
[00:00:56.478]tonnage. Since the final desired product
[00:00:59.144]is the sugar content, he has been optimizing
[00:01:01.847]nitrogen on the beet crop based on
[00:01:03.901]the sugar yield from the previous year.
[00:01:06.426]We’ve identified that, that’s a very sure
[00:01:09.176]way to cut down on the nitrogen input,
[00:01:12.080]which is a saving on the part of farmers
[00:01:16.065]and also will have minimal environmental
[00:01:20.205]implications.
[00:01:21.721]Maharjan said the project has a
[00:01:23.671]wonderful collaboration between his UNL soils
[00:01:26.618]program at PREEC and the Western
[00:01:30.552]Sugar Cooperative in Scottsbluff.
