- [00:01:10.554]Youth benefits of a county fair extend beyond just having fun.
- [00:01:16.594]“Youth who participate in a fair learn independence, receive
- [00:01:21.344]feedback, mastery and gain positive relationships with
- [00:01:26.366]caring adults,” according to Jeremy Elliot-Engel, 4-H youth
- [00:01:31.046]development specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
- [00:01:35.732]The county fair experience allows youth to balance their
- [00:01:39.732]desire to have fun with the responsibilities of preparing exhibits
- [00:01:44.642]and caring for animals and livestock for exhibition, all under a time structure.
- [00:01:50.522]“It is an opportunity for youth to learn how
- [00:01:53.373]to balance their responsibilities with their desire to have fun.
- [00:01:57.183]"They have deadlines, like show times,
- [00:02:00.689]when they check out and they need to meet those deadline.
- [00:02:04.771]Youth even sometimes learn the world is not
- [00:02:08.441]always fair depending on the judge that day.
- [00:02:12.441]These experiences all build independence.”
- [00:02:15.731]Throughout the year, 4-H youth are working
- [00:02:18.591]on projects in all project areas (not just livestock).
- [00:02:22.591]According to Elliot-Engel “A county fair provides
- [00:02:26.221]an opportunity for each young person to get feedback on their project.
- [00:02:32.403]County fair competition is not about who wins
- [00:02:35.783]grand champion, or who gets the purple ribbon;
- [00:02:39.133]it is about learning how your hard work and effort has paid off.”
- [00:02:43.597]The skills you have gained.
- [00:02:46.287]The county fair also provides an opportunity to demonstrate mastery.
- [00:02:50.987]A youth starting out may not know how to prepare
- [00:02:53.807]their animal for the show ring, and will ask another 4-H youth.
- [00:02:58.703]This mentoring is innate to 4-H, and each year youth will return,
- [00:03:05.203]growing and learning the skills necessary to have a successful project.
- [00:03:09.266]Eventually, they will be in the role as a mentor.
- [00:03:13.356]Of course, none of this would be possible without the mentoring or feedback
- [00:03:18.446]from volunteers and parents helping everyone be successful.
- [00:03:23.389]It should be no surprise that it takes caring adults
- [00:03:26.249]to volunteer to make a fair happen and help youth gain
- [00:03:30.819]important life skills from the fair experience.
- [00:03:34.349]If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the 4-H programs
