- [00:00:04.184]Good morning.
- [00:00:05.392]Good morning.
- [00:00:06.840]It's great to see you all.
- [00:00:08.220]Glad you made it out, even though it's raining again.
- [00:00:12.120]We are so thrilled to have you with us this morning
- [00:00:14.610]and for today's statewide convening.
- [00:00:17.460]We have a number
- [00:00:18.293]of guests joining us remotely today as well.
- [00:00:20.100]So, welcome to you also.
- [00:00:22.410]For those of you who I haven't had the opportunity
- [00:00:24.240]to meet yet, my name is Megan Hopkins and I'm the Director
- [00:00:27.360]of the Nebraska Collegiate Prevention Alliance.
- [00:00:30.000]This fall will mark my 14th year with NECPA,
- [00:00:34.050]which is crazy to think it's been that long.
- [00:00:38.850]Even better though, to know that there are several faces
- [00:00:41.190]in here who have been here, if not longer than me,
- [00:00:43.800]almost as long as myself,
- [00:00:45.510]and so it's great to see both the new
- [00:00:48.120]and older faces joining us, not in age,
- [00:00:51.330]but just in experience with us.
- [00:00:55.740]So, I'm really happy to have you all here.
- [00:00:57.660]As you know, the last several years have been a little bit
- [00:01:00.570]of a transition period for us in the NECPA,
- [00:01:03.660]and in how we have managed the statewide convening.
- [00:01:06.510]So, during our COVID years, as we refer to them, right,
- [00:01:10.800]we held this convening virtually,
- [00:01:13.080]as well as some other skill-building trainings
- [00:01:15.420]that we offered to members,
- [00:01:16.590]and last year was our first year, during the pandemic,
- [00:01:21.180]that we were able to bring us all back together
- [00:01:22.950]in person here in Lincoln.
- [00:01:25.020]And so, it's great to see you all again in person.
- [00:01:27.420]I feel like we get so much more out of it
- [00:01:29.190]when we're able to be together,
- [00:01:31.200]have networking opportunities,
- [00:01:32.790]have a chance to meet people
- [00:01:34.740]without a screen in front of us.
- [00:01:36.600]And so, I hope you all take the opportunity today,
- [00:01:39.810]in addition to learning about some
- [00:01:41.850]of our evidence-based practices
- [00:01:43.650]in higher education prevention,
- [00:01:45.600]to also network with your colleagues,
- [00:01:47.760]learn more about what they're doing, and be able
- [00:01:49.950]to build those relationships moving forward after today.
- [00:01:53.760]So, just a couple of opening welcome statements from me
- [00:01:57.270]and then I'll turn it over to the rest of our staff
- [00:02:00.030]to continue this morning and then we'll let you all loose
- [00:02:02.490]for your breakout sessions.
- [00:02:04.860]I wanted to thank you all again for taking the time out
- [00:02:07.500]of what I know are busy days,
- [00:02:09.030]especially as we approach the start of the fall semester,
- [00:02:11.880]to be with us today.
- [00:02:13.650]The knowledge and skills that you all bring is very valuable
- [00:02:16.860]for all of us here within the NECPA to share.
- [00:02:19.890]It's what makes our coalition so strong,
- [00:02:21.810]is having that wealth of knowledge from such a diverse group
- [00:02:24.300]of individuals working on diverse campuses.
- [00:02:27.090]And so, we really appreciate that.
- [00:02:29.310]I know that for many of you, like us in the NECPA,
- [00:02:32.040]the last year has been full of transitions.
- [00:02:34.890]We've seen, you know, the great exit the pandemic caused
- [00:02:38.970]of a lot of people we've worked with for a number
- [00:02:40.680]of years deciding to transition to other work,
- [00:02:43.830]and the drain that that's caused on many campuses.
- [00:02:47.220]We know that a lot of institutions are also dealing
- [00:02:49.200]with budget crises, and so that's putting more work
- [00:02:51.870]on people who remain on campus.
- [00:02:54.420]And really just transition and turnover from top down
- [00:02:58.050]on a lot of our campuses.
- [00:02:59.940]And I know for our members, oftentimes,
- [00:03:01.650]you all are the ones called upon to do more work
- [00:03:04.020]on your campuses with less resources.
- [00:03:06.810]And so, we really appreciate your willingness
- [00:03:09.450]to be here today and for your continued partnership
- [00:03:11.880]in our statewide organization as well.
- [00:03:14.040]So, kudos to all of you for being here today.
- [00:03:17.070]We really appreciate it.
- [00:03:22.410]I'm really excited for today's convening.
- [00:03:24.180]We have a lot of great information this session to go over.
- [00:03:28.260]We'll be hearing from Jason Kilmer this afternoon,
- [00:03:31.890]during lunch, which is always a fun presentation.
- [00:03:35.160]I know Jason Kilmer has kind of become synonymous
- [00:03:38.430]with our statewide convenings.
- [00:03:40.320]He is always a fan favorite.
- [00:03:41.910]You will not be bored during lunch.
- [00:03:43.530]It's not your typical lunch presentation,
- [00:03:45.240]if you're new to Jason.
- [00:03:46.830]So, looking forward to having him back this year as well.
- [00:03:50.640]And then, we have a number of local presenters,
- [00:03:53.220]as well as some other presenters from other states
- [00:03:56.130]that will be joining us today
- [00:03:57.930]to cover a wide variety of topics.
- [00:03:59.670]So, we're sprinkling in kind of everything
- [00:04:01.290]that we know that you all care about
- [00:04:03.240]in terms of discussion about cannabis and Delta-8
- [00:04:06.450]and where that might be headed.
- [00:04:07.920]There's some great information about mental health,
- [00:04:11.190]also some good presentations around data
- [00:04:13.320]and how to further utilize it on your campuses.
- [00:04:15.810]We are recording our session,
- [00:04:17.190]so if there's something that you're like,
- [00:04:18.187]"Oh, I really wish I could get to that too,
- [00:04:19.777]"but it's at the same time," don't worry.
- [00:04:21.540]We'll make that available to you all after the session.
- [00:04:24.390]And so, we're really excited to be able
- [00:04:26.070]to share this information.
- [00:04:27.870]As always, if there is other information
- [00:04:30.243]that you're interested in or issues
- [00:04:32.070]that you see emerging on your campuses
- [00:04:33.690]that we could help facilitate conversations around,
- [00:04:36.420]please let us know.
- [00:04:38.160]You'll be receiving a survey at the end of today,
- [00:04:40.860]and so, that'll give you an opportunity to weigh in
- [00:04:43.230]on any of those topics that you might be interested in
- [00:04:45.420]for future sessions with us.
- [00:04:48.600]So, I also wanna take a moment to thank
- [00:04:51.030]our amazing staff at the NECPA.
- [00:04:53.850]It's crazy to say that we have a staff.
- [00:04:57.600]For those of you who have been around for a while,
- [00:04:59.310]you know that shortly, let's see, yeah,
- [00:05:01.740]my pandemic brain causes me to make fuzzy dates, right,
- [00:05:05.400]ever since March, 2020,
- [00:05:07.410]but I feel like shortly after the pandemic started,
- [00:05:09.660]Alex Brown left us and we,
- [00:05:12.060]because of hiring freezes and pandemic issues,
- [00:05:15.330]probably about a six month period where it was just me kind
- [00:05:17.850]of trying to navigate and manage all things NECPA.
- [00:05:21.450]And so, when Antionette joined us in January of 22,
- [00:05:25.530]is that right, Antionette?
- [00:05:27.360]That was like a lifesaver to have someone else
- [00:05:30.300]to be able to help navigate what we were working on
- [00:05:33.510]and where we were headed.
- [00:05:34.710]And then last year, just over a year ago,
- [00:05:36.780]Melissa Butler also joined our team,
- [00:05:39.480]and she's been a great asset to us.
- [00:05:41.280]A lot of you have been able to work with both Melissa
- [00:05:43.500]and Antionette over the last year.
- [00:05:45.360]Really brought a lot of strengths to our team,
- [00:05:48.000]allowed us to expand a lot of the work
- [00:05:50.010]that we've been doing.
- [00:05:51.360]Melissa did a great job managing
- [00:05:53.250]the half a million dollar grant we received
- [00:05:55.320]from the American Rescue Plan funding,
- [00:05:57.450]which allowed us to provide over a hundred thousand dollars
- [00:06:00.360]in direct mini-grant support
- [00:06:01.920]to your organizations and your campuses.
- [00:06:04.740]And so, without her,
- [00:06:05.970]I don't know how we would've ever spent those funds,
- [00:06:08.220]and certainly had a hard time spending them
- [00:06:10.440]in constructive ways.
- [00:06:11.670]So, we really appreciate the work of our staff.
- [00:06:15.180]And then, in particular, I wanna thank Melissa
- [00:06:17.760]and Antionette for their hard work
- [00:06:19.170]in preparing for the convening today.
- [00:06:21.390]As I mentioned, I've been doing this work
- [00:06:23.010]for almost 14 years, and was always the lead person
- [00:06:27.120]on our skill-building workshops.
- [00:06:28.740]You know, we used to do day-long trainings
- [00:06:30.450]on different content topics
- [00:06:32.490]and then these statewide convenings.
- [00:06:34.470]Never have I ever just shown up
- [00:06:37.320]and been able to participate until this year.
- [00:06:40.110]And so, it's been a very weird experience
- [00:06:42.960]to not be the one managing catering
- [00:06:44.820]and parking and registration,
- [00:06:46.680]but it's also been really enjoyable.
- [00:06:48.300]So, I wouldn't be able to do that without the great support
- [00:06:51.960]from Melissa and Antionette,
- [00:06:53.100]and also our intern from UNMC this year, Haley Irons,
- [00:06:56.970]who did a lot of behind the scenes work
- [00:06:58.440]and deserves a lot of credit
- [00:07:00.150]for getting us put together today.
- [00:07:02.340]So, I really wanna say thank you.
- [00:07:04.710]I know how much work goes on behind the scenes
- [00:07:06.960]to put these things together, and so,
- [00:07:09.330]it's a lot of important work
- [00:07:11.100]and support that I really appreciate.
- [00:07:13.500]We will be back here in this room at the end of the day.
- [00:07:16.590]So, after your afternoon breakout sessions wrap up,
- [00:07:18.810]please don't take off.
- [00:07:19.950]We have some content to close out with this afternoon.
- [00:07:23.550]We will have lunch in this room as well.
- [00:07:25.260]So, this is where you'll be coming back to.
- [00:07:27.240]And then, I believe I'm turning things over to Melissa,
- [00:07:31.110]who's got some information for us as well.
- [00:07:33.510]So, thank you all for joining us.
- [00:07:36.456](audience applauding)
- [00:07:47.280]All right, thank you for that, Megan.
- [00:07:48.900]Thanks for the introductions.
- [00:07:50.730]First of all, if some of you were missing
- [00:07:52.860]a name badge at the entrance,
- [00:07:54.660]one of the sheets went missing in the printer,
- [00:07:57.180]so I did reprint those and there's some out
- [00:07:59.340]at the front table for you,
- [00:08:01.590]so feel free to stop by and get those
- [00:08:03.390]before you head off to your breakout sessions.
- [00:08:06.660]We wanted to do some recognition of the,
- [00:08:11.490]some of our members just as a way to say thank you
- [00:08:13.590]for all of the hard work that you've put in over the years.
- [00:08:16.950]So. we thought, we were thinking about a way
- [00:08:18.900]that we could recognize everybody.
- [00:08:21.750]So, I thought about giving everybody challenge coins.
- [00:08:25.110]I don't know if anybody is familiar
- [00:08:26.220]with the concept of challenge coins,
- [00:08:27.750]but they started as a military tradition.
- [00:08:30.900]They signify membership in a coalition or an organization.
- [00:08:36.150]And so, the coin will bear the insignia
- [00:08:39.150]of the coalition or the organization,
- [00:08:41.430]and it's to be carried, traditionally,
- [00:08:44.250]so that if you meet another member
- [00:08:46.230]of the coalition or the organization,
- [00:08:47.941]you can challenge them to a coining.
- [00:08:50.880]And the first person that presents the coin wins, basically.
- [00:08:54.540]And so, the other person must pay a penalty,
- [00:08:56.640]and usually that means that you have to pick up the tab.
- [00:08:59.010]So, we thought that would be a fun way
- [00:09:01.290]to recognize everybody and to get everybody excited
- [00:09:04.530]about being a part of the NECPA.
- [00:09:07.110]So, we wanted to recognize the years
- [00:09:08.910]of service that people have put in.
- [00:09:10.860]So, we have new members,
- [00:09:11.910]and some of these people aren't so new.
- [00:09:14.580]They're within five years in that new member category,
- [00:09:18.090]but then, we also have some folks
- [00:09:19.470]that have served five years, 10 years,
- [00:09:21.210]and then we have one person in the 15 year category.
- [00:09:24.270]So I wanted to hand some coins out to everybody today.
- [00:09:27.750]So Kevin, if you're here, here's your coin.
- [00:09:34.653](audience applauding)
- [00:09:38.960]And Kristina, is Kristina here?
- [00:09:40.710]Yep. Oh.
- [00:09:42.925](audience applauding)
- [00:09:47.100]Let's see here.
- [00:09:47.933]Lacey and Lai-Monte are attending remotely.
- [00:09:51.540]Kalika, I know I saw you.
- [00:09:53.552](audience applauding)
- [00:09:57.630]And then Jenny.
- [00:10:00.867](audience applauding)
- [00:10:04.860]Gina.
- [00:10:06.758](audience applauding)
- [00:10:11.070]And then I know that Eric is attending remotely,
- [00:10:15.150]and Llani, there you are.
- [00:10:18.109](audience applauding)
- [00:10:22.290]Welcome to our new-ish members.
- [00:10:25.650]We're happy to have you here.
- [00:10:27.420]And then for our five years of service,
- [00:10:29.550]we have Alicia who is attending remotely.
- [00:10:32.790]Kathy is also attending remotely.
- [00:10:35.670]Rachel, right here.
- [00:10:38.088](audience applauding)
- [00:10:41.996]Theresa, I thought I saw you.
- [00:10:44.449](audience applauding)
- [00:10:49.213]All right, and then Andreea.
- [00:10:53.185]There you are, okay.
- [00:10:55.470](audience applauding)
- [00:10:59.111]Alaina.
- [00:11:02.452](audience applauding)
- [00:11:06.780]And then in a category all by himself.
- [00:11:10.201](audience cheering and applauding)
- [00:11:11.034](laughing)
- [00:11:11.916](audience applauding)
- [00:11:23.730]So again, we appreciate all the years of service
- [00:11:25.920]that you've put in and all of the hard work
- [00:11:28.200]that you do to make your campuses a great place
- [00:11:30.240]for students to attend college in Nebraska.
