- [00:00:05.375]This is our Roads Scholar Tour.
- [00:00:08.875]We have this
- [00:00:10.208]We've done this every year since I've been here.
- [00:00:12.541]The individuals who take the trip, in my humble
- [00:00:16.500]estimation, are much more connected to each other.
- [00:00:19.750]They're connected
- [00:00:20.416]to the university, to the institute, to the people of this great state.
- [00:00:24.291]And we're we're really honored to have our new chancellor,
- [00:00:29.875]Chancellor Rodney Bennett, and his partner Temple.
- [00:00:32.875]So welcome to Nebraska.
- [00:00:36.041]We go.
- [00:00:37.958]I'll thank you all.
- [00:00:39.000]I'm here every Thursday night.
- [00:00:44.583]What a trip
- [00:00:45.416]like this does, and especially over multiple days
- [00:00:49.166]is helps you to move that theory into a practical application.
- [00:00:53.250]So now, instead of just hearing about the different parts of the state
- [00:00:58.166]and the diversity that is here, or you actually get to experience it
- [00:01:02.250]and then you get to feel it and touch it about be with the people and talk to the people
- [00:01:06.625]and really sort of immerse yourself in the richness
- [00:01:10.166]that's really here in a practical kind of way.
- [00:01:13.500]This is a beautiful photo.
- [00:01:14.708]Oh, yeah.
- [00:01:16.375]Oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah.
- [00:01:18.541]Like three weeks ago.
- [00:01:20.416]Hi I’m Emily Martindale
- [00:01:21.541]I am an agricultural education student.
- [00:01:23.875]at UNL. Yeah thank you Becky!
- [00:01:26.583]So I graduate May 2025. And I’m so excited to see you guys.
- [00:01:29.416]Hopefully I see you guys on campus.
- [00:01:35.041]Being out
- [00:01:35.875]like we are today, being across the state and seeing some of the things
- [00:01:39.083]that we're seeing, really reminds me of my own
- [00:01:42.416]childhood and my own upbringing.
- [00:01:45.958]Yeah, Yeah.
- [00:01:47.791]What a great artistic
- [00:01:50.416]visual to that.
- [00:01:51.958]The people
- [00:01:53.166]the values, the things that are important,
- [00:01:56.250]the goals that we have for public higher education,
- [00:01:59.416]the goals that we have for students, the ways in which we interact
- [00:02:03.333]with our community, the ways in which we honor the land
- [00:02:07.791]that we are stewards of all feels like what I've been doing
- [00:02:12.958]really from my earliest upbringing and recollection.
- [00:02:17.375]So when I thought about Nebraska as a candidate, I really was thinking
- [00:02:21.625]about the place where there was a natural fit, where I would understand
- [00:02:28.166]what the assignment was, as it were,
- [00:02:31.333]but also a place where I could learn
- [00:02:34.750]and I could make a contribution and sort of bring my 30 plus years of experience
- [00:02:39.875]and apply it in ways that maybe had not been applied previously.
- [00:02:44.541]So I think today in this tour
- [00:02:47.375]really begins to bring into greater focus what the next ten, 12,
- [00:02:52.541]15 years, however long, can look like
- [00:02:55.875]if we're bold, if we're courageous, if we don't lose sight
- [00:03:01.458]of what our responsibilities
- [00:03:04.291]as the flagship in the land grant institution are to the state
- [00:03:09.291]and what our fundamental sort of responsibility
- [00:03:12.500]might be to students and to their families and to the taxpayers of the state.
- [00:03:18.166]I think that we're only limited by our own imagination and our own creativity.
- [00:03:23.166]And I know that in UNL there are no shortage of people
- [00:03:26.708]who are creative and who are passionate and who are committed to this work.
- [00:03:31.375]So I'm excited to be a part of it, and I'm excited to be the chancellor
- [00:03:34.750]of a place who has those types of values and those priorities.
- [00:03:44.000]I want to thank you all for coming today.
- [00:03:47.250]You know, this is the state of the university address.
- [00:03:50.708]Done unconventionally.
- [00:03:52.958]Do you believe they let me do this job.
- [00:03:56.875]This ear
- [00:03:58.500]due to the hot weather is these kernels won't ever develop here.
- [00:04:02.875]Oh, look at that.
- [00:04:03.500]And so it's not real good.
- [00:04:05.625]If I if I walk over
- [00:04:08.791]20 around, which is good, that's good.
- [00:04:11.125]Yeah, that's really a really good.
- [00:04:12.666]But it had potential.
- [00:04:14.750]But the lack of moisture shut it down.
- [00:04:16.916]And that girth Mike was established when it was.
- [00:04:19.041]Yeah. Yeah. V6.
- [00:04:20.750]When the size by the year was.
- [00:04:21.958]Established, established the rows around and you know the,
- [00:04:25.250]the length was kind of established and then too.
- [00:04:27.625]But whole nation here just the last week or two is what determined that.
- [00:04:31.375]Wow. Nice nice to meet you.
- [00:04:33.083]The people of this great state are connected in a very visceral way
- [00:04:38.166]with their university and to see us out here,
- [00:04:41.875]not just on this tour, but on a regular basis, really,
- [00:04:46.166]really connects us with the people that we serve.
- [00:04:49.708]At the end of the day, I think this just punctuates our role as a land grant university.
- [00:04:55.166]And, you know, the more connections we make, the
- [00:04:58.291]the better off we are as an institution and the better off we are as a state.
- [00:05:02.083]And candidly,
- [00:05:03.208]we're all in the same boat together and together we’ll help grow Nebraska.
- [00:05:07.291]You're right. Irritating. Yeah.
- [00:05:11.541]But what our goal is,
- [00:05:12.833]is you can look up and see the cameras that we have mounted on the ceiling here.
- [00:05:16.708]And then this is actually the view that you get from all six cameras.
- [00:05:20.208]So we have 24 hour continuous monitoring of these cattle,
- [00:05:24.416]and then we'll be able to develop an algorithm
- [00:05:27.208]to track them on an individual basis and have individual data on each calf.
- [00:05:33.958]And so that will help in the future to be able to make management decisions on an
- [00:05:39.291]individual level at times.
- [00:05:41.750]So as you go to top, is this kind of a fiber matter on top?
- [00:05:44.791]Yeah. If you go down,
- [00:05:47.250]do you feel that fluid at the bottom?
- [00:05:48.666]Oh yeah. It's warmer.
- [00:05:51.208]A lot of reactions taking place about 103 degrees in there.
- [00:05:54.750]Yeah.
- [00:05:55.208]And then if you feel the sides for how rough those sides are.
- [00:05:58.083]Oh, wow. Yeah. So it's a papilla.
- [00:06:02.000]Oh, yeah.
- [00:06:03.083]Oh, yeah, yeah.
- [00:06:04.000]Oh, yeah, yeah.
- [00:06:06.375]Easy. Easy.
- [00:06:12.750]I think it's a once in a lifetime experience.
- [00:06:25.541]But you look out over the vastness
- [00:06:28.625]and you think about where we started from back in Lincoln and where we are now.
- [00:06:33.833]And as Mike Boehm has said several times on the trip,
- [00:06:39.208]these zones that we have, this ability
- [00:06:42.666]to really experiment and explore
- [00:06:46.458]with different ecosystems across our state in both large scale and small scale
- [00:06:52.375]kinds of ways, I think really leads,
- [00:06:55.833]you know, in a very important way
- [00:06:58.375]to our ability to be the leader
- [00:07:01.166]in agriculture and natural resources,
- [00:07:04.208]not just in our country, but really all around the world.
- [00:07:08.250]And all of that exists right here in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:07:11.666]There is more difference between Lincoln
- [00:07:14.583]and Scottsbluff than there is from Lincoln to New York City.
- [00:07:18.750]So research wise, it's wide open.
- [00:07:21.958]The agriculture community out here is just phenomenal.
- [00:07:25.625]And, you know, it's oftentimes most of the challenges
- [00:07:28.708]we can't solve on our own.
- [00:07:30.416]You know, we're we're part of the ag community where we try to add in
- [00:07:34.666]where we can, But it's oftentimes working with producers,
- [00:07:38.250]with ranches, with farms, people that come to us with ideas about, hey,
- [00:07:42.000]you know, we need to maybe focus more on research on this.
- [00:07:45.083]And and and so we come together and and try to co-produce science.
- [00:07:49.250]You know, it's not just scientists doing our thing.
- [00:07:51.416]It's it's, it's we all work together to find solutions to challenging problems.
- [00:08:01.041]I could not imagine beginning
- [00:08:03.958]my chancellorship here without having spent this time on the road.
- [00:08:08.458]I think that it really frames and brings in a greater clarity and greater focus.
- [00:08:14.208]The opportunities that I have as Chancellor
- [00:08:17.250]to lead and direct and be a part of
- [00:08:20.833]just an incredible body of work
- [00:08:23.458]that affects so many people, whether it's climate, whether it's water,
- [00:08:28.708]whether it's food, whether it's animals, whether it's the land,
- [00:08:33.750]whether it's that person on their deck or in their backyard, who has a garden,
- [00:08:38.625]who's wanting the best harvest
- [00:08:41.291]for their hard work all spring and summer.
- [00:08:43.833]All of that is work that we have seen and heard about while on this tour.
- [00:08:49.000]And as a university, we have an opportunity to be at the forefront
- [00:08:52.791]of sort of advancing that and taking that to the next level.
