- [00:00:00.000]I'm Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg
- [00:00:01.890]and I'm the dean of the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:05.070](light upbeat music)
- [00:00:10.260]I've got the best job on campus
- [00:00:11.730]because I get to work with amazing people
- [00:00:13.440]and solve really wicked problems facing society.
- [00:00:16.825](excavator rumbling)
- [00:00:17.970]Probably the biggest thing happening right now
- [00:00:19.560]at the college is the construction of our major expansion
- [00:00:22.650]which will just create more space
- [00:00:24.240]for us to do all that important work.
- [00:00:26.191](light upbeat music continues)
- [00:00:36.599](upbeat music)
- [00:00:40.514]So I started swimming because I got drug along
- [00:00:43.350]to the pool deck with my older sisters who were swimmers
- [00:00:46.050]and I wanted to jump in too.
- [00:00:49.230]So I swam from the time I was, I think competitively
- [00:00:51.840]maybe seven years old, all the way through college.
- [00:00:55.440]And it kind of just happened, you know
- [00:00:56.790]we weren't necessarily looking to be a swim family
- [00:00:58.920]but our oldest daughter started with swim lessons
- [00:01:01.050]and then saw the swim team and wanted to join.
- [00:01:03.690]And what happens is then all the kids follow suit and
- [00:01:06.780]and I have six kids, so we've got a crew of swimmers
- [00:01:09.653](water splashing)
- [00:01:11.310]probably have been to every pool
- [00:01:12.720]in Lincoln already in our short time here.
- [00:01:15.180]We've got kids swimming practices
- [00:01:17.310]and then meets all over the place.
- [00:01:19.860]Swimming is a great place
- [00:01:21.270]one, to spend time with others alongside one another.
- [00:01:24.240]So I love spending time with the family in that way.
- [00:01:27.240]And I chase kids and bring kids
- [00:01:29.190]to morning swim practice and oftentimes jump in with them.
- [00:01:32.460]Good job.
- [00:01:33.293]All right, push off, turn around and push off, push off.
- [00:01:36.480]Ready, set, go.
- [00:01:39.240]I would say swimming helps me be a better dean
- [00:01:41.490]because it gives me a lot of time to think.
- [00:01:43.620]And of course
- [00:01:44.453]the physical fitness helps to keep the mind fit too.
- [00:01:48.120]So in swimming, you're off and trying to get
- [00:01:49.770]to that end of the pool as fast as you can.
- [00:01:51.750]But with fall coming up
- [00:01:53.070]I'm really focused on diving right in.
- [00:01:55.413](light upbeat music)
