- [00:01:25.080]The center in general does a lot of different things.
- [00:01:27.750]First, we do presentations just like this one

- [00:02:01.830]with a collection of inclusive and diverse book choices.

- [00:02:14.190]or help us out around the office to fulfill volunteer hours.

- [00:02:21.330]also runs a learning community called Prism.
- [00:02:24.540]This learning community provides a community
- [00:02:26.340]for students who identify as LGBTQA+
- [00:02:29.880]or allies of the community.
- [00:02:32.310]The learning community will be in gender inclusive housing.
- [00:02:35.940]Prism emphasizes the intersectionality
- [00:02:38.340]within everyone's identities,
- [00:02:40.050]and allows students to explore their personal identities
- [00:02:42.740]in a supportive and caring space.
- [00:02:46.170]The Lavender Closet clothing exchange,
- [00:02:48.450]which is open during the center's hours,
- [00:02:50.640]seeks to provide all UNL students, staff and faculty
- [00:02:54.060]with free and discreet access
- [00:02:55.560]to identity affirming clothing and accessories.
- [00:02:58.650]When students feel comfortable and validated
- [00:03:00.480]in their expression, they're free to focus
- [00:03:02.700]on forwarding their education and pursuing their dreams.

- [00:03:35.700]of events as part of our programming.
- [00:03:38.310]These include the LGBTQA+ History Month Dinner,
- [00:03:42.690]Drag Shows, Lavender Graduation,
- [00:03:45.090]and smaller community building and educational events.
- [00:03:50.790]Other events we run include the Gender Equity Conference,
- [00:03:54.330]the Women's History Month Celebration,
- [00:03:56.640]and the Growing Your Identity Event.
- [00:04:01.890]So what will we discuss today?
- [00:04:03.960]In this presentation, we'll discuss terminology
- [00:04:06.720]for our sexual organs, consent, and how to ask for it.
- [00:04:12.300]Contraception and the physical aspects of sexual health.
- [00:04:17.550]I'd also like to note
- [00:04:18.840]that throughout this presentation you'll hear me
- [00:04:21.270]use the terms people with fulvus and vaginas
- [00:04:24.300]and people with penises.
- [00:04:26.220]This is in recognition that a person's genitalia
- [00:04:28.650]does not indicate their gender identity.
- [00:04:33.120]So first, let's start with terminology.
- [00:04:37.470]Our first set of terminology involves anatomy
- [00:04:40.050]of individuals assigned a female at birth or a fab.
- [00:04:44.310]To start, the vulva is the term used
- [00:04:46.740]to describe all the structures of external genitalia.
- [00:04:50.400]These are all the structures we can see
- [00:04:52.050]on the outside of the body.
- [00:04:54.660]The vagina is the muscular tube that extends
- [00:04:57.330]from the uterus to the outside of the body.
- [00:05:00.870]During childbirth, our offspring pass through this canal.
- [00:05:05.430]The uterus is the muscular organ
- [00:05:08.040]where a fertilized egg implants and where offspring develop.
- [00:05:14.430]Ovaries are the glands responsible for producing
- [00:05:16.860]and releasing eggs, progesterone, and estrogen.
- [00:05:20.640]Connecting the ovaries
- [00:05:21.750]to the uterus are the fallopian tubes.
- [00:05:24.240]These tubes are responsible for transporting the eggs
- [00:05:26.820]from the ovaries to the uterus.
- [00:05:29.370]Our last term the cervix,
- [00:05:31.860]is the lower end of the uterus that connects to the vagina
- [00:05:34.770]and widens during childbirth.
- [00:05:39.540]As we talk about these terms and anatomy,
- [00:05:41.610]I'd also like to note that these body parts
- [00:05:43.860]can look different for each person.
- [00:05:46.050]Everyone's genitalia comes
- [00:05:47.580]in lots of different sizes and colors
- [00:05:49.740]and each is unique in its own way
- [00:05:51.570]with none being more correct than the other.
- [00:05:58.380]Our second set of terminology includes anatomy
- [00:06:00.780]of individuals often assigned male at birth.
- [00:06:03.900]While there are many different parts besides those listed,
- [00:06:06.540]today we'll be focusing primarily on the penis, the scrotum,
- [00:06:10.290]testicles, and prostate.
- [00:06:12.450]The penis is the sexual organ used for intercourse,
- [00:06:15.388]and consists of the root body and head.
- [00:06:18.180]Within the penis is the urethra which transports the removal
- [00:06:22.470]of both urine and semen from the body.
- [00:06:25.230]The scrotum is the sack of skin that hangs behind the penis.
- [00:06:29.010]The scrotum contains the testicles.
- [00:06:31.230]Testicles located within the scrotum
- [00:06:33.960]or organs that produce both sperm and testosterone.
- [00:06:37.140]Our last term is prostate, which is a gland in the body
- [00:06:40.080]that provides additional fluids for to occur.
- [00:06:44.640]Our next topic we'll discuss together is consent.
- [00:06:47.940]First, what is consent?
- [00:06:49.590]Consent is when a person actively agrees to engage
- [00:06:52.200]in sexual activity with someone.
- [00:06:54.570]To be giving consent someone cannot be forced
- [00:06:57.300]or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- [00:07:00.840]So how do we ask for consent?
- [00:07:02.670]There are many different ways to ask for consent.
- [00:07:05.430]Some examples are, would you like me to touch you here?
- [00:07:09.270]Can I kiss you?
- [00:07:10.890]Can I touch you there?
- [00:07:12.750]Are you still comfortable with this?
- [00:07:15.330]Do you want me to keep going?
- [00:07:17.280]Do you want me to stop?
- [00:07:19.290]Just checking in. Are we good to continue?
- [00:07:23.850]These are all ways to make sure everybody is comfortable
- [00:07:26.160]and agreeing to the sexual activity.
- [00:07:29.790]Now that we've gone over how to ask for consent,
- [00:07:32.460]what does consent sound like?
- [00:07:34.620]Consent can sound like different ways.
- [00:07:37.380]Some of these include.
- [00:07:38.670]Yes, I like that.
- [00:07:41.070]That feels good.
- [00:07:42.960]Keep going.
- [00:07:44.280]And I want you to.
- [00:07:46.800]There are also phrases that consent does not sound like.
- [00:07:50.040]These include phrases such as:
- [00:07:52.170]I'm not sure.
- [00:07:53.640]I don't know.
- [00:07:55.080]I don't want to.
- [00:07:57.000]Maybe.
- [00:07:58.350]Never mind.
- [00:07:59.940]I don't want to anymore.
- [00:08:01.770]Stop. And no.
- [00:08:04.200]When asking someone for their consent,
- [00:08:06.360]it is important to know that someone cannot give consent
- [00:08:09.030]while under the influence, unconscious, underage
- [00:08:12.720]or mentally incapacitated.
- [00:08:15.240]Now that we've discussed consent,
- [00:08:17.220]it's important to discuss the physical aspects
- [00:08:19.560]of sexual health as well.
- [00:08:22.530]Our first topic in sexual health
- [00:08:24.060]is sexually transmitted infections.
- [00:08:26.670]There are different types
- [00:08:27.540]of sexually transmitted infections.
- [00:08:29.760]Three of these types are those that can be caused
- [00:08:31.680]by bacteria, a virus, or a parasite.
- [00:08:34.980]Examples of bacterial STIs are chlamydia, gonorrhea
- [00:08:38.520]and syphilis.
- [00:08:40.170]Chlamydia and gonorrhea are common STIs
- [00:08:42.720]that may present themselves with no symptoms
- [00:08:44.790]but are easy to treat with antibiotics once detected.
- [00:08:47.730]Syphilis is also a common STIs that can be easily treated.
- [00:08:51.090]However, if left untreated syphilis can cause
- [00:08:53.580]permanent damage such as brain damage and blindness.
- [00:08:57.690]A second type of STIs is caused by viruses.
- [00:09:00.900]Examples of these include herpes, HPV and HIV.
- [00:09:05.880]The third type are those caused by parasites.
- [00:09:08.490]An example of this type is pubic lice,
- [00:09:11.580]otherwise known as crabs.
- [00:09:13.800]Pubic lice are small insects that attach to the hairs
- [00:09:16.410]in someone's genitals.
- [00:09:18.090]Part of taking care of your reproductive
- [00:09:19.830]and sexual health is keeping an eye
- [00:09:21.780]on any signs of symptoms of sexually transmitted infections.
- [00:09:25.500]Symptoms of these include:
- [00:09:26.700]Sores or bumps around your thighs, butt cheeks, or genitals.
- [00:09:31.260]Unusual or weird discharge from your penis or vagina.
- [00:09:34.950]Itching, pain, irritation or swelling in the penis,
- [00:09:38.160]vagina, vulva or anus.
- [00:09:41.400]Burning while urinating or needing to urinate a lot
- [00:09:45.090]and flu-like symptoms.
- [00:09:47.160]To prevent and detect STIs is important
- [00:09:49.650]to get tested regularly, use barrier contraceptives,
- [00:09:52.920]and to seek care if you notice any symptoms.
- [00:09:56.190]For gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV testing,
- [00:09:59.220]those tests are covered by student fees.
- [00:10:02.130]Another condition important to sexual health
- [00:10:04.590]is urinary tract infections or UTIs.
- [00:10:08.100]Urinary tract infections are a bacterial infection
- [00:10:10.920]in the urinary tract.
- [00:10:12.870]They often present with symptoms
- [00:10:14.250]such as a cloudy appearance, or a strong smell in the urine,
- [00:10:18.540]a frequent urge to urinate, painful or burning urination,
- [00:10:22.950]back pain or fever.
- [00:10:24.960]UTIs can be treated with antibiotics
- [00:10:27.150]and it's important to take your whole prescription
- [00:10:29.130]of antibiotics even when you start to feel better.
- [00:10:32.610]People at an elevated risk for UTIs
- [00:10:34.830]include those of a vagina or vulva,
- [00:10:37.440]those with an uncircumcised penis
- [00:10:39.690]and those who frequently have sexual intercourse.
- [00:10:42.960]UTIs can be prevented by urinating after sex,
- [00:10:45.720]staying hydrated and wiping front to back.
- [00:10:49.110]Now that we've talked about some physical aspects
- [00:10:50.880]of your sexual health,
- [00:10:52.380]when thinking of STIs, you're probably wondering,
- [00:10:54.930]how do I prevent these?
- [00:10:56.940]This is where we'll discuss contraception.
- [00:11:01.620]There are many different methods
- [00:11:02.670]of contraception available to fit your own needs
- [00:11:05.310]whether that is to prevent STIs, prevent pregnancy,
- [00:11:08.190]or regulate menstrual cycles.
- [00:11:10.590]While each has their own rate
- [00:11:11.730]of pregnancy prevention specifically,
- [00:11:14.040]different options include:
- [00:11:15.330]Hormonal methods, barrier methods,
- [00:11:17.880]emergency contraception, long-acting reversible methods,
- [00:11:21.120]and sterilization.
- [00:11:22.860]We will walk through more detailed methods
- [00:11:24.690]of each of these in the next slide.
- [00:11:27.840]There are many different options
- [00:11:28.920]for different types of contraception methods
- [00:11:31.230]as mentioned on the previous slides.
- [00:11:33.390]For hormonal methods, there are the birth control pill,
- [00:11:36.450]patch and injection, as well as the vaginal ring
- [00:11:40.260]which should be used in someone with a vagina or vulva.
- [00:11:43.980]Options of barrier methods include male and female condoms.
- [00:11:47.490]Contraceptive sponges to be used
- [00:11:50.220]by which are inserted into the vagina and spermicide.
- [00:11:53.940]Emergency contraception are options which would be utilized
- [00:11:57.510]shortly after intercourse has occurred to prevent pregnancy.
- [00:12:01.710]These include both the copper IUDs
- [00:12:04.140]and/or emergency contraceptive pill.
- [00:12:07.410]Long-lasting reversible methods are methods
- [00:12:09.510]which don't have to be utilized daily like the pill
- [00:12:12.960]but can still be removed and aren't permanent.
- [00:12:15.420]Examples of this option are IUDs and the implant
- [00:12:18.690]which is where a small rod is planted
- [00:12:20.430]in the arm of the individual with a vagina.
- [00:12:24.630]Both these options work to prevent pregnancy
- [00:12:26.760]over an extended period of time.
- [00:12:28.890]The last option is a permanent solution and a sterilization.
- [00:12:32.400]This takes place to either a vasectomy
- [00:12:34.290]in an individual with a penis and/or tubal ligation
- [00:12:37.890]in an individual with a vulva and vagina.
- [00:12:42.060]While many of these methods can help
- [00:12:43.350]in preventing pregnancy,
- [00:12:44.610]not all can help in the prevention of STIs.
- [00:12:47.340]Additionally, a barrier method like a condom
- [00:12:50.070]can help in the prevention of pregnancy and STIs
- [00:12:52.860]spread through bodily fluids, but it may not be beneficial
- [00:12:56.010]to the prevention of STIs like pubic lice
- [00:12:58.980]since the STI spreads through pubic lice,
- [00:13:02.490]bedsheets and clothing.
- [00:13:05.100]Available through the university are safer sex kits.
- [00:13:08.040]There are three different kinds available, latex
- [00:13:10.560]latex-free and flavored.
- [00:13:12.600]Each kit contains three condoms and one packet of lube.
- [00:13:17.730]These kits are located around campus
- [00:13:19.260]on many different locations.
- [00:13:20.910]These include the Nebraska Union, OASIS,
- [00:13:24.240]TRIO, the Health Center,
- [00:13:26.370]the Husker Pantry on both city and East Campus,
- [00:13:29.820]and the East Campus Nebraska Union.
- [00:13:32.820]There are a number of resources on campus
- [00:13:34.650]that can help with sexual wellbeing.
- [00:13:36.660]The first is the University Health Center
- [00:13:38.520]which offers many services
- [00:13:39.780]for reproductive and sexual health.
- [00:13:41.910]These services include annual gynecological
- [00:13:44.700]and sexual health exams, birth control
- [00:13:47.370]and other contraceptive services.
- [00:13:49.680]The HPV vaccine, STI testing,
- [00:13:52.350]pregnancy testing and referrals, PrEP and PEP prescriptions
- [00:13:56.100]and treatment for pelvic pain, infection
- [00:13:58.350]and other sexual and reproductive health concerns.
- [00:14:02.010]The second resource is the UNL
- [00:14:03.720]Center for Advocacy Response and Education.
- [00:14:06.960]This office provides a safe space for survivors of sexual
- [00:14:10.080]and relationship violence to meet with the care advocate
- [00:14:13.080]as they navigate concerns and needs
- [00:14:15.060]related to the violence or harassment they experienced.
- [00:14:18.120]Here you will find QR codes that will take you
