- [00:00:00.150]So in many ways this new name
- [00:00:02.430]really reflects who we are as a program.
- [00:00:05.460]We're very much a program that's focused
- [00:00:07.410]on kind of a hands-on understanding
- [00:00:10.020]of how technology and agricultural systems work.
- [00:00:12.960]And I think this new name really captures the breadth
- [00:00:15.780]of technology that we see today.
- [00:00:18.000]So we're not just mechanized systems,
- [00:00:20.760]but it's everything from power and machinery systems,
- [00:00:23.340]to sensors, to electronics, to hydraulics,
- [00:00:25.740]to the digital Ag systems that are coming online.
- [00:00:29.280]So the new name really captures that breadth and diversity
- [00:00:32.790]of technology that we see in agriculture today.
- [00:00:35.571](upbeat music)
- [00:00:37.110]This is a key academic program,
- [00:00:40.380]particularly when we think about
- [00:00:41.910]the adoption of Ag technologies,
- [00:00:44.640]and needing to prepare the next generation of professionals,
- [00:00:48.720]leaders, problem solvers,
- [00:00:50.670]to be able to really think from a systems perspective,
- [00:00:53.550]thinking about what it looks like
- [00:00:55.110]from the agricultural production,
- [00:00:56.670]whether that be cropping systems, animal systems,
- [00:00:59.400]pairing that with the business aspect of things,
- [00:01:02.640]and then on the technology.
- [00:01:04.261](upbeat music)
- [00:01:05.094]So with the increasing pressure on agriculture,
- [00:01:07.350]it's more important to incorporate technology
- [00:01:09.990]into the solutions that we provide.
- [00:01:12.420]Therefore, it's really important for our students
- [00:01:14.460]to have a good understanding,
- [00:01:16.050]both of the the fundamentals,
- [00:01:17.880]and the sciences, and the equipment,
- [00:01:20.220]but also the technology
- [00:01:21.960]that is becoming increasingly important.
- [00:01:25.020]Also, how to manage that technology,
- [00:01:27.000]really requires a systems approach
- [00:01:29.010]to identify the different components in the system,
- [00:01:31.080]how they relate to each other,
- [00:01:32.520]and how to manage that system effectively.
- [00:01:35.490]Again, we are at a very interesting time
- [00:01:37.440]where we are talking about how do we bring robots,
- [00:01:41.880]and artificial intelligence,
- [00:01:44.220]and smart systems into agriculture,
- [00:01:46.380]you know, so we have had precision Ag technology,
- [00:01:49.800]you know, for decades, but now,
- [00:01:51.300]like we are looking at really highly automated
- [00:01:55.200]and autonomous systems, so it's a very exciting time.
- [00:01:57.720]And I think the students in this curriculum
- [00:02:02.010]will have a major role to play,
- [00:02:04.440]you know, in the farm of the future, so.
- [00:02:07.009](upbeat music)
- [00:02:08.580]I believe the program, you know, exposed me
- [00:02:11.340]to the newer technology a lot,
- [00:02:13.860]you know, and some of the stuff that you would just see
- [00:02:15.930]that is on the research side.
- [00:02:17.670]And then you'd ask a question about that,
- [00:02:19.170]or your professors would tie that back in
- [00:02:21.000]when they were talking about it in the classroom,
- [00:02:23.190]and then it would spark that passion
- [00:02:24.570]for you then to want to learn more about it,
- [00:02:26.280]so then you'd research.
- [00:02:27.240]And I would say outside of the classroom
- [00:02:29.910]is where the spark was made,
- [00:02:32.010]but then inside the classroom
- [00:02:33.270]is where the reinforcement was made.
- [00:02:35.580]So we are preparing them to assimilate technology,
- [00:02:39.330]understand technology, develop it, test it, deploy it,
- [00:02:43.350]and actually turn it into something useful
- [00:02:45.450]as opposed to it simply being a novelty.
- [00:02:47.910]Since we can't predict the technology that's coming,
- [00:02:51.210]we have to reinforce the fundamentals
- [00:02:53.970]that will allow our students
- [00:02:55.860]to adapt and be adaptable with those technologies.
- [00:02:59.398](upbeat music)
