- [00:00:05.370]Hi, and welcome
- [00:00:06.390]to "Teaching World Language with Technology."
- [00:00:09.510]I'm Guy Trainin, I'm professor in the Department
- [00:00:11.970]of Teaching Learning and Teacher Education at UNL.
- [00:00:14.637]And I'm Crystal Liu, I'm the World Language Specialist
- [00:00:17.400]at the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:20.700]And this is our final episode of this series.
- [00:00:25.890]We're hoping that this will become so popular
- [00:00:28.500]that we have to do a second season.
- [00:00:30.060]We're not sure, so it's up to you.
- [00:00:31.560]Click like and comment if you have a comment.
- [00:00:36.540]Today we're gonna talk about what's the newest thing,
- [00:00:39.030]and that is ChatGPT.
- [00:00:40.680]It's rocking the world in general.
- [00:00:42.630]It's definitely rocking the education world.
- [00:00:45.060]So let's first talk about what are some opportunities
- [00:00:48.060]for teachers to use ChatGPT in the world language classroom.
- [00:00:52.050]Actually, we can use ChatGPT for teaching,
- [00:00:55.920]for searching for information,
- [00:00:57.780]and also get ideas for teaching, so let's start
- [00:01:01.470]with how we can use ChatGPT as world language teachers.
- [00:01:05.700]And I love that idea,
- [00:01:07.110]because you have to know what you're doing,
- [00:01:10.484]and also you have to assume that if it's publicly available
- [00:01:13.860]and it can do homework for kids,
- [00:01:15.360]at least some of our students might want to use it,
- [00:01:17.910]so knowing what it can and can't do is really helpful,
- [00:01:20.640]and that's exactly what I did.
- [00:01:22.140]I just said write a short dialogue in French
- [00:01:24.840]between Philippe and Jacque about going to a party,
- [00:01:28.350]and you can see it generated
- [00:01:30.270]a short dialogue very, very quickly.
- [00:01:34.170]What else can we do as teachers?
- [00:01:35.670]So the first thing you said, go and find out, play with it.
- [00:01:39.060]It is free to use, you can use it in multiple languages,
- [00:01:42.990]although the main language is the main language
- [00:01:45.600]of the internet, which is English.
- [00:01:48.060]So I used ChatGPT to generate a piece of culture rating
- [00:01:52.937]about Chinese food for Chinese New Year's celebration
- [00:01:57.330]in 200 words, and for my next group,
- [00:02:00.600]I asked ChatGPT to generate 200 words
- [00:02:04.320]for Chinese decorations for Chinese New Year, and next,
- [00:02:09.150]I want to ask ChatGPT to generate a 200 word piece
- [00:02:15.150]for different ways of celebrating Chinese New Year.
- [00:02:20.580]So generate a 200 word passage
- [00:02:25.380]about Chinese New Year decorations,
- [00:02:32.220]and that's in English, right?
- [00:02:33.750]Yes.
- [00:02:36.480]And this is one of the things that I love
- [00:02:38.640]about it is actually you can see it creating,
- [00:02:42.150]and it's quite magical.
- [00:02:44.370]So it talks about the red lantern,
- [00:02:47.370]so Chinese characters, door couplets,
- [00:02:51.510]and so you can see how easy it is to create.
- [00:02:55.290]So this is on the teacher side.
- [00:02:57.180]The challenge that we have is this also happens
- [00:03:00.330]on the student side, so students can be at home,
- [00:03:02.670]and they can use ChatGPT to create the same kind of text.
- [00:03:07.260]So you have to think about what do you want them to do,
- [00:03:11.160]and where do you want them to do it?
- [00:03:13.110]All right, what else can we do?
- [00:03:14.940]So I just go to ChatGPT asking for, okay,
- [00:03:18.292]provide opening activities that will help me engage students
- [00:03:25.170]in learning about directions.
- [00:03:28.770]And here, ChatGPT is suggesting to her to create
- [00:03:31.830]a scavenger hunt, and in the classroom, hide a few items,
- [00:03:35.970]and then use the directions, you talked about directions,
- [00:03:38.790]use right, left, up, and down to find those objects
- [00:03:42.900]in a fun and engaging way.
- [00:03:44.580]What else can we do?
- [00:03:45.960]We can also ask ChatGPT to create
- [00:03:50.700]writing samples for students.
- [00:03:52.470]And so I took what you said,
- [00:03:55.320]and did it a little bit different,
- [00:03:57.990]and that is, I asked for ideas for topics.
- [00:04:00.690]So if you talk about students who are a little bit lost,
- [00:04:02.880]what are my ideas?
- [00:04:04.200]And again, this is not necessarily something we couldn't do
- [00:04:07.350]on our own, but if we're in a jam, or if we're in a hurry,
- [00:04:10.830]or if we're looking for some new fresh ideas,
- [00:04:13.536]getting that list would help,
- [00:04:16.530]just because it might jog something new.
- [00:04:18.810]All right, let's talk about the student level.
- [00:04:21.000]At the student level,
- [00:04:22.200]how can we think about our classroom, and what can we do?
- [00:04:26.760]I would say, as teachers, I would bring students
- [00:04:31.470]for an open discussion, what we can do,
- [00:04:34.680]and then showing students.
- [00:04:36.810]This way, I'm showing students
- [00:04:38.610]I know ChatGPT as well, and I'm using it.
- [00:04:42.330]If you are using it, I know.
- [00:04:44.910]A lot of teachers that we've talked to have said
- [00:04:49.380]we're a little bit worried what's gonna happen
- [00:04:51.630]with homework.
- [00:04:52.770]I think the solution
- [00:04:53.790]for homework is to really start seriously thinking
- [00:04:56.760]about your classroom being reversed,
- [00:05:01.770]or what you usually call the flipped classroom,
- [00:05:04.350]and that is the writing happens in class,
- [00:05:07.770]the lecture, or language sampling, or watching,
- [00:05:11.520]whatever it is, can happen at home.
- [00:05:13.620]So at home you consume, and the creation happens in class
- [00:05:16.980]so you can know when it is a ChatGPT creation,
- [00:05:20.370]because that's how you planned it,
- [00:05:21.870]and when it is the students creating
- [00:05:23.640]on their own with a pencil and paper,
- [00:05:25.590]and being able to generate their own ideas
- [00:05:27.960]to battle spelling, or character creation
- [00:05:31.350]in Chinese and all of that,
- [00:05:33.330]because these are important features of the language.
- [00:05:35.310]We don't want to do away with them.
- [00:05:37.230]Yeah, I really like the in-class idea,
- [00:05:39.900]because when students are actually creating writings,
- [00:05:45.390]or you know, conversations, that's the time actually,
- [00:05:48.840]they are struggling, they need help.
- [00:05:50.850]If we have that time in class, not only we can see,
- [00:05:55.260]we can monitor whether they're using ChatGPT,
- [00:05:57.630]at the same time, we can, you know, discover,
- [00:06:01.530]find out their problems or their challenges,
- [00:06:05.940]and reteach it or address that on the spot.
- [00:06:09.900]Yeah, and you can still use ChatGPT to help them create,
- [00:06:14.940]especially in more advanced classes where they already have
- [00:06:17.730]a significant vocabulary and significant grammar,
- [00:06:20.670]they can use ChatGPT in the early creation phases,
- [00:06:24.480]and then go beyond ChatGPT, so we can use it that way.
- [00:06:30.120]And the second thing that you can use ChatGPT, I think,
- [00:06:34.320]is to create, and then when there's new vocabulary there,
- [00:06:38.850]it's an opportunity for students to go
- [00:06:40.410]and find out what the vocabulary means,
- [00:06:42.360]how it's pronounced, and then participate.
- [00:06:45.270]So those early passages that I created,
- [00:06:48.000]for example, in French, those dialogues,
- [00:06:51.000]there are some words there that were new to me,
- [00:06:53.340]so I had to go look them up, and now I know what they mean,
- [00:06:56.190]and now I can use them in a sentence.
- [00:06:58.140]So in a way, ChatGPT is teaching me language
- [00:07:00.750]by inserting the vocabulary, and that can be very exciting.
- [00:07:05.130]And also we can do some activities
- [00:07:07.170]with students, for example,
- [00:07:08.520]I will ask my students to generate a piece
- [00:07:11.730]about a girl going to a very exciting football game,
- [00:07:15.990]describe the girl, and ChatGPT will describe the girl
- [00:07:19.260]in the third person, but we can ask the students, okay
- [00:07:22.530]let's read the third person piece.
- [00:07:24.720]Now can we do it in first person?
- [00:07:28.320]So we do have to know it, and we have to understand it,
- [00:07:31.350]and then we have to find productive ways to use it.
- [00:07:35.640]Yes.
- [00:07:37.290]All right, and thank you.
- [00:07:38.400]We've had a lot of fun working together
- [00:07:41.070]and producing this series, and if you do like it,
- [00:07:44.490]please click like and leave a comment,
- [00:07:47.790]and we'll consider making another series.
- [00:07:51.630]Thank you.
