- [00:00:05.250]Hi, and welcome to Teaching World Language
- [00:00:07.380]with Technology from TechEdge.
- [00:00:09.780]And I'm Chrystal Liu.
- [00:00:10.860]I'm the world language specialist
- [00:00:12.420]at the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:16.320]And I'm Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:17.340]I'm a professor of education
- [00:00:18.780]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:20.730]and today, we're going to talk about Flip.
- [00:00:24.450]Which is known as Flipgrid in, a few years ago,
- [00:00:29.070]a couple of years ago.
- [00:00:30.630]So it's our platform that allows students
- [00:00:33.510]or teachers to create videos.
- [00:00:37.950]And this platform has really became popular
- [00:00:41.850]during the pandemic when a lot of us were home,
- [00:00:44.340]and we were trying to teach from home
- [00:00:46.350]and to see students' products from home,
- [00:00:48.420]and Flipgrid suddenly became a really good option
- [00:00:52.050]for capturing student practice.
- [00:00:54.750]But what we want to talk about is how you can use it
- [00:00:58.170]even today in world language to help instruction.
- [00:01:04.080]Flip is very good tool.
- [00:01:06.270]I have to say a lot of world language teachers love it
- [00:01:08.773]because it gives us so many options,
- [00:01:11.970]and it allows us to differentiate.
- [00:01:15.810]First we know students like to express themselves,
- [00:01:21.450]but at the same time, they are not comfortable.
- [00:01:24.060]At that level, I would recommend allow some tools like Flip
- [00:01:29.730]so they can record themselves without being interrupted,
- [00:01:33.300]and also they can concentrate
- [00:01:34.860]on what they are trying to express, not being, you know,
- [00:01:38.070]scared by others or embarrassed by people being around.
- [00:01:43.830]And that's really important,
- [00:01:45.030]but we also want to remind you that eventually
- [00:01:47.100]we do want them to be able to talk
- [00:01:48.780]because the whole point of communication
- [00:01:50.610]is being able to communicate with other people.
- [00:01:53.520]We want them to get over it eventually,
- [00:01:56.040]but we want them to also have a safe place to start.
- [00:01:59.490]And the other thing that I would like to caution against,
- [00:02:02.610]especially if we're sending kids to other locations
- [00:02:05.730]that are not our classrooms to do the recording,
- [00:02:07.830]and that is some of our students tend to want to be perfect.
- [00:02:11.790]And so they might get into a loop
- [00:02:13.470]where they're recording for two hours
- [00:02:15.000]for exactly 20 seconds just so they can make it perfect.
- [00:02:19.110]So we want to, as you get to know your students,
- [00:02:22.230]you want to set the parameters
- [00:02:24.360]so it doesn't become this task that takes over their life
- [00:02:28.290]because they're spending the whole afternoon
- [00:02:30.570]perfecting a two-minute video.
- [00:02:32.730]All right, can you show us how to use it?
- [00:02:35.250]Yeah, we can go and we create group.
- [00:02:38.670]I would create, you can do classroom,
- [00:02:41.670]clubs or organizations.
- [00:02:43.260]Of course we want to do classroom,
- [00:02:45.300]so this is going to be your classroom.
- [00:02:48.960]So I teach high school, so I would use High School,
- [00:02:52.980]enter the group name right here.
- [00:02:54.690]I would say Chinese 5&6.
- [00:02:58.410]That's my other ones level.
- [00:03:00.150]So now I can pick our scene that I like.
- [00:03:04.316]And can you upload a photo?
- [00:03:07.560]I uploaded a photo, like this one I uploaded.
- [00:03:10.680]Okay, so yes, we can,
- [00:03:12.240]and one of my favorite things to do
- [00:03:14.520]when you can upload a photo for the description of a class
- [00:03:17.550]is actually take a photograph of all the kids in the class.
- [00:03:20.253]Yes. And then it feels
- [00:03:22.170]a lot friendlier when you get in there,
- [00:03:24.360]and you've got the people you know.
- [00:03:26.700]And so under the group you have created,
- [00:03:29.850]you can create topics.
- [00:03:31.200]So now I have three topics in this one,
- [00:03:34.320]and I have a whole list here.
- [00:03:37.890]Again, one of the advantages here
- [00:03:40.800]is that we are talking about really lowering
- [00:03:44.070]the affective filter, so making a safe space
- [00:03:47.400]for students to try out saying languages.
- [00:03:50.010]I think in Chinese it's especially important.
- [00:03:51.870]It's important in all world languages,
- [00:03:53.670]but the more different it is,
- [00:03:57.900]the harder it is for students to just say anything.
- [00:04:00.990]And so creating the conditions
- [00:04:02.820]where they are actually participating
- [00:04:05.100]is really, really important,
- [00:04:07.350]and that's what we're really thinking about.
- [00:04:11.340]Can you tell us a little bit more
- [00:04:12.720]about the advantages of using Flip?
- [00:04:16.437]One of the advantages that I really like the way
- [00:04:20.640]that I can create a learning community with Flip,
- [00:04:24.690]because I can create a classroom
- [00:04:26.940]so that all my students come in
- [00:04:28.530]and respond to my prompts.
- [00:04:30.210]At the same time, they are able to respond
- [00:04:34.080]to other students' video, make comments,
- [00:04:37.560]and like it or not like it.
- [00:04:39.450]One of the things is it's really easy to log in.
- [00:04:42.090]You log in with your Google password
- [00:04:44.070]or with your Microsoft password.
- [00:04:46.380]Students can enter with whatever they're already using.
- [00:04:49.260]You can see what Chrystal was talking about
- [00:04:51.480]is all of the other participants are right here,
- [00:04:54.720]and I can listen to what they have done.
- [00:04:58.080]But I love the simplicity.
- [00:05:00.420]All I need to do to get going is press the Record button.
- [00:05:05.940]Lovely, very simple procedure that I can do.
- [00:05:10.470]I can create just audio, or I can create video.
- [00:05:14.370]I love video, that's why I'm on this thing.
- [00:05:16.920]But we can see students who say,
- [00:05:19.687]"I really would like to do something else."
- [00:05:24.510]You can see obviously I can, for example, use a backdrop,
- [00:05:30.239]and I will use a lovely backdrop like this.
- [00:05:33.810]And so all the features that we are used to from Zoom
- [00:05:36.960]and from other apps are available here.
- [00:05:40.560]On the right side, you can add text in,
- [00:05:43.410]oh, the stickers and things.
- [00:05:45.440]So I can add text right here.
- [00:05:48.900]Yes. So let me try that.
- [00:05:50.760]I will do Typewriter. I love that font.
- [00:05:55.260]Here we are in the center.
- [00:05:58.887]All right, and we can change fonts to different languages.
- [00:06:04.800]And so this is really helpful.
- [00:06:08.550]And then to get going, all you have to do is press here.
- [00:06:12.630]You get the 3, 2, 1, and now I'm recording,
- [00:06:17.940]so Chrystal can later watch it.
- [00:06:19.710]The one problem that I have right now
- [00:06:21.780]is my Chinese is not very good,
- [00:06:23.490]but English is my world language.
- [00:06:26.880]And you can add music.
- [00:06:28.590]You can also decide that this is not good enough,
- [00:06:32.280]and you can go back, and if you like it, you go Next.
- [00:06:36.600]You give it a caption.
- [00:06:38.010]You provide a link if there's a good link for that,
- [00:06:41.010]and then you post it, and you can see that it's uploading.
- [00:06:45.600]And also as teachers, we can provide feedback to students.
- [00:06:50.430]So the feedback can be invisible to other students.
- [00:06:54.420]And I'm trying to create a comment.
- [00:06:56.340]So if I do a comment, all I had to do was click
- [00:07:00.240]on that little bubble, and I could add a comment.
- [00:07:03.060]And that comment can be moderated.
- [00:07:05.100]And especially if you're anticipating some challenges,
- [00:07:08.610]it's good to moderate.
- [00:07:10.710]The other option is to talk about community
- [00:07:12.930]and what are our community rules and then work from there.
- [00:07:17.430]So when you think about this,
- [00:07:19.050]what are the biggest advantages of using Flip?
- [00:07:23.370]The biggest advantage is to, you know,
- [00:07:26.400]provide safe environment
- [00:07:27.810]so students can start as a very beginning level,
- [00:07:31.230]so they're comfortable, and they can,
- [00:07:33.330]at the same time, they can enjoy recording themselves,
- [00:07:36.270]focusing on expressing themselves.
- [00:07:38.490]The second one is the community
- [00:07:40.830]that Flip can help to create so that students can see,
- [00:07:44.977]"Oh, I'm not doing good,
- [00:07:46.770]but my classmates are at the same level."
- [00:07:50.790]And also I would like to mention
- [00:07:52.800]about some teachers like to create a sample
- [00:07:56.190]before students submit.
- [00:07:57.870]And the last thing that I want to say
- [00:08:00.750]is that it is really useful to think about
- [00:08:03.780]how do we use our time wisely in class.
- [00:08:05.940]And if we are having students practice dialogue
- [00:08:09.090]with each other or speaking in front of everybody else,
- [00:08:12.420]besides the emotional filter that functions
- [00:08:15.660]and the idea of, "I'm not feeling comfortable
- [00:08:18.180]speaking in a world language in front of my peers
- [00:08:22.500]and my teacher," you also have the fact
- [00:08:25.560]that it is a lot less efficient.
- [00:08:30.360]And one of the things that you can do
- [00:08:32.940]with something like Flip is give everybody
- [00:08:35.520]six minutes to plan and then execute a one-minute sample,
- [00:08:39.330]and then everybody has practiced
- [00:08:41.490]instead of one or two students
- [00:08:44.130]have had the opportunity to practice.
- [00:08:46.140]All right, what are some things for teachers
- [00:08:48.270]to think about from, what might be the challenges
- [00:08:52.290]when you use this?
- [00:08:53.970]I would say sometimes students
- [00:08:55.980]are making inappropriate comments
- [00:08:58.350]because you want to, you know, just joke around.
- [00:09:01.410]But the system, it gives us a option
- [00:09:04.020]to go through the comments and approve those.
- [00:09:09.210]And also I would like to mention about Flip
- [00:09:12.900]is not a really good tool for interpersonal communication.
- [00:09:17.370]Yeah, we can ask two students to record together,
- [00:09:20.190]but it's not the best tool.
- [00:09:22.560]We want students to eventually be able
- [00:09:24.690]to talk to each other, you know,
- [00:09:26.280]to be more comfortable, express themselves,
- [00:09:28.800]because the ultimate goal of what language learning
- [00:09:32.130]is to help people to be able to communicate with,
- [00:09:37.770]you know, people from, help learners to communicate
- [00:09:42.570]with people from the target culture.
- [00:09:45.450]All right, so today on Teaching World Language
- [00:09:48.840]with Technology, we talked about Flip,
- [00:09:51.270]and we'll see you next time.
