- [00:00:05.280]Hi, and welcome
- [00:00:07.260]to Teaching World Language with Technology from Tech EDGE.
- [00:00:11.820]I'm Chrystal Liu.
- [00:00:13.478]I'm the World Language Specialist
- [00:00:14.400]at the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:17.430]And I'm Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:18.330]I'm a professor at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:21.510]and I created Tech EDGE
- [00:00:24.210]and I would love to keep sharing those videos with you,
- [00:00:27.810]so please subscribe.
- [00:00:30.300]Today we're going to talk about Choice Board.
- [00:00:33.150]And Choice Board is actually our strategy
- [00:00:36.510]to engage students by offering different choices
- [00:00:40.320]so that students can choose different ways,
- [00:00:45.480]different activities to engage,
- [00:00:48.600]but at the same time develop the same nine language skills.
- [00:00:53.130]And this is where we're bringing in the research.
- [00:00:56.790]We know from research that people like choice,
- [00:00:59.880]but not too much choice.
- [00:01:01.140]So if you open choice and say,
- [00:01:03.007]"Here are 25 things you can do,"
- [00:01:05.820]most people or quite a few of our students at least freeze
- [00:01:10.320]or don't know what to pick
- [00:01:11.460]or keep jumping from one thing to the other.
- [00:01:13.470]So the magic of choice is providing
- [00:01:16.620]a few really good choices, but a limited number.
- [00:01:21.315]So three or four is usually the numbers we go with.
- [00:01:24.480]So students have the ability to choose,
- [00:01:27.270]they're motivated by it, they're highly engaged,
- [00:01:29.880]but not so many that they take forever to make a choice
- [00:01:34.050]and then they question their choice and go back again.
- [00:01:37.890]Yeah, here I want to show you
- [00:01:39.570]some resource that's available with language education
- [00:01:43.140]at Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:01:47.187]Which we're happy to partner with.
- [00:01:49.008]And so it's important for us to highlight the resources
- [00:01:51.780]that are available on their website for free.
- [00:01:54.480]Chrystal has developed a lot of them,
- [00:01:56.490]and so please go and check all of these out.
- [00:02:00.690]So here is a a little blurb up
- [00:02:03.240]about Choice Board.
- [00:02:05.694]And you can check that out and get the basic information.
- [00:02:07.410]You can see it's very short.
- [00:02:09.211]What we're trying to give you is enough of a nugget
- [00:02:11.050]so you can act on it without doing all of the research.
- [00:02:14.250]We are doing the research for you,
- [00:02:16.350]and really Chrystal has done the work,
- [00:02:18.120]I'm just learning here, so.
- [00:02:19.950]Yeah, actually we have invited Dr. Le Kang
- [00:02:23.730]to make a webinar in our Guest Speaker Series.
- [00:02:27.750]The recording is here, it's all about Choice Board.
- [00:02:30.690]So if you want to know more,
- [00:02:32.795]here's the links that help you to go to the recording
- [00:02:37.920]to learn more about it, to explore.
- [00:02:40.320]And also her slides is available here.
- [00:02:43.350]And now let's go to her example of Choice Board.
- [00:02:46.650]Here's example shared by Dr. Le Kang.
- [00:02:49.590]We can see what Dr. Le has done.
- [00:02:53.610]She provides three choices
- [00:02:55.800]for different modes of communication.
- [00:02:59.760]We know, as word language teachers,
- [00:03:01.740]there three modes of communication,
- [00:03:03.690]interpersonal, presentational,
- [00:03:06.240]and interpretive modes of communication.
- [00:03:09.750]So for each modes, she provides three choices.
- [00:03:13.440]So students can go and make the choice to do the exercise.
- [00:03:18.750]For example, interpersonal mode.
- [00:03:24.660]We can see speaking right here.
- [00:03:27.450]And also another speaking task,
- [00:03:32.040]and here is listening and speaking.
- [00:03:34.620]Sometimes students want to do listening and speaking.
- [00:03:37.470]So three choices for interpersonal.
- [00:03:43.746]We can see the first choice is musical.
- [00:03:45.210]A lot of students really enjoy
- [00:03:46.740]learning language through music.
- [00:03:48.960]So here's the choice for the students.
- [00:03:51.420]And we can also see,
- [00:03:53.730]choose a classmate to create a dialogue
- [00:03:58.350]on clothes shopping through sock puppet.
- [00:04:01.650]So if students really want to engage with their classmates,
- [00:04:06.780]so they can do that as well.
- [00:04:09.300]And what I love about this Choice Board idea,
- [00:04:13.620]that unlike other times when we talk about it
- [00:04:15.960]and it's a specific app,
- [00:04:18.030]a Choice Board here is created inside Google,
- [00:04:21.090]it can be created inside any digital document.
- [00:04:24.936]All you need is to have a template
- [00:04:26.280]that makes it easy to do the things.
- [00:04:29.460]I see that Le has included icons
- [00:04:32.040]that helps students navigate that a little bit easily
- [00:04:34.980]and helps you give directions a little bit easily.
- [00:04:37.530]And then because it's a digital document,
- [00:04:39.960]you can actually embed the links.
- [00:04:42.690]If you want it as a paper document,
- [00:04:44.640]I would really recommend having QR codes
- [00:04:47.880]so students can scan them and go to that activity.
- [00:04:51.510]It is possible to do this completely in paper
- [00:04:53.790]and just have nine stacks, in this case,
- [00:04:56.970]because there's three of each, nine stacks of paper,
- [00:05:00.540]and then students make their choice
- [00:05:02.070]and go pick up the assignments.
- [00:05:03.390]You could do this completely offline.
- [00:05:06.120]Yes, sometimes we know
- [00:05:08.430]there're limited resources for students.
- [00:05:10.710]So we like to have, you know,
- [00:05:13.830]paper and the digital at the same time.
- [00:05:16.050]And I also recommend for some students
- [00:05:18.510]who really do not want to use digital devices,
- [00:05:21.960]which we do have, right,
- [00:05:24.360]so we would have like, for example, for speaking,
- [00:05:28.920]I would include our, you know, in-person session for that.
- [00:05:35.550]For example, I would allow students to do it in classroom,
- [00:05:39.120]or for shy students,
- [00:05:40.290]I would allow them to do in my office during my office hour.
- [00:05:45.660]So that, you know, different students
- [00:05:47.640]have different choices.
- [00:05:48.660]They can just choose the one
- [00:05:50.730]that they're most comfortable with.
- [00:05:53.580]Excellent. All right.
- [00:05:55.260]So what do you think are the most important things
- [00:05:57.360]for teachers to take away from this idea of a Choice Board?
- [00:06:01.200]The most important thing I think is to consider
- [00:06:04.500]all three modes of communication at the same time.
- [00:06:07.735]Because we want students to be able
- [00:06:09.900]to choose one activity for each mode
- [00:06:14.070]so that they can have a balanced practice of each skill.
- [00:06:19.500]Also, I would like to recommend
- [00:06:21.360]to have the same rubric for all choices.
- [00:06:25.680]So that even though students are doing different things,
- [00:06:29.040]we are only checking the things we really care about.
- [00:06:32.970]We are not checking how great they are
- [00:06:36.120]when they are using a different technology,
- [00:06:39.540]while other students are using, you know, paper only.
- [00:06:42.930]So if we are giving grace for things in one choice,
- [00:06:50.280]not giving grace in other choice,
- [00:06:52.560]that's unfair for students.
- [00:06:54.360]We just want to make sure
- [00:06:55.470]that we have one rubric for all activities.
- [00:07:00.030]All right, so thank you, and we'll see you next time
- [00:07:02.760]on Teaching World Language with Technology.
